Hmmm...I wonder what would happen if EVERYONE did this? Gotta wonder who the genius in charge of this is....

Apr 21st 2009 7:16PM I agree 100% I used to download movies all the time. I got sick of the poor quality, overly compressed video. I go to buy a Blu-Ray...the movie is $35 MSRP. Go to Amazon, a little better...$27.50. Pawn shop or used at Blockbuster: $15....sold American!
For games, I avoid the $60 price point like the plague! I have bought a total of 4 games at full price: Halo 3, GTA 4, SoulCalibur 4, and Dead Space. (the ones I REALLY wanted NOW!) The rest of my collection consists of used games (at much more of a discount than GameStop and its ilk gives you!) and new games that were on sale. I got Ratchet and Clank for $15 used, Metal Gear Solid 4 for $20 used, Disgaea 3 $20 new, Orange Box $17 used, etc.
I can honestly say that I have bought 5 to 6 times as many games at $20 than I would have at $60.

JVC's DLA-RS2 gets a Cinemascope update {Engadget HD}
Sep 10th 2008 12:02PM The DLA-RS2U projector is $7995 MSRP currently. The update you are referencing does add the capability for 2.35:1 constant height anamorphic processing, but it DOES NOT include the lens needed to do this. That model is the RSAL1 and is and ADDITIONAL $6495 MSRP. You will also need to spend about $4000 or more for a masking 2.35:1 screen. This is not a budget system, but if you are looking for a true cinematic experience at home, it is hard to beat the performance of this system at anywhere near its price point. JVC also introduced 4 new projectors at CEDIA (well, 2 really, but they have a consumer and professional line) and the new 20u will be replacing the 2u here within the next couple months. Expect similar price points but improved performance. The new 20U will also be THX certified!

Aug 22nd 2008 3:21PM The truth is that "expensive" is a relative term. While the site may be geared towards a certain demographic, that is no excuse to perpetuate ignorance. Quite the contrary, this is an OPPORTUNITY for a site such as this to explain what these systems do, and what you get for a certain amount of money. Most consumers do not understand what they are shopping for when looking for whole home audio systems. If the only thing they have to compare is a home theater in a box, even a $2000 whole home system will look expensive. However, if it is explained HOW the system works, and what functionality you gain or lose at certain price points, then a customer can make an INFORMED decision as to how much to spend.
Sorry, but I feel that calling a system like this "obscenely expensive" is a disservice to the readers and a cop-out for not doing enough research, and I will stand by that opinion.

Aug 22nd 2008 12:18PM I really object to your characterization of these systems as "obscenely overpriced"! It is very apparent that you have little to no experience in home automation/whole home audio. If you DID, you would know that Nuvo systems start with their "Simplese" system at a modest $999.95 retail for a 4 source, 4 zone amplifier. Their "Grand Concerto" system is one of the most robust on the market in its price range, and that one starts around $5500 for a 6 source 8 zone system (complete with 8 keypads). (BTW Nuvo is one of the first on the market with OLED keypads!) While someone who does have any experience with this may find these prices high, anyone who has seriously looked into distributed audio systems knows that Nuvo is RIGHT IN LINE WITH THE COMPETITION!
These systems are NOT for end users to install. They are designed to be installed by professionals and customized for the end user. They are much more than a speaker selector and volume control "duct tape and bailing wire" solution for multi-room audio. They give the user control of all sources from each keypad location, and in many cases, will transmit meta-data (song title, artist, album, cover art, playlists, etc) from an iPod or other music server to the keypad, so the user can see what the heck he or she is selecting.
Bottom line guys, is that I really tire of supposed "experts" on one of my favorite technology blogs ranting constantly that everything is "expensive". It is only "expensive" if you do not understand what value the product will give you, and that, my friends, is the whole point of learning about it! I would suggest some research into the marketplace, find out what these systems do for $5000 and what makes them different from each other. Then maybe you could write an article with your findings and let the masses know!

Aug 11th 2008 2:15PM My guess is that the site buckled under the weight of all the whining laments and petitions of the HD-DVD fanboys, distraught over their "superior" format having lost the war!
Seriously, all credibility of that site was lost when they violated their supposedly "neutral" status to ban any pro Blu-Ray chatter...even from insiders!
No big loss if their whole site burned down IMHO.

Jul 23rd 2008 12:32PM The most important feature was not mentioned! These sets use ACTIVE LED backlighting! This means that the light source behind the LCD panel can be selectively turned off IN PORTIONS of the screen. This enables the deepest blacks of any LCD I have seen to date, and is what enables the ridiculous 50,000:1 contrast ratio. These models are the direct replacement for last years "81" series sets and if last year's models are any indication, these should be the BEST looking LCDs on the market when they ship!
