Japan warming to Blu-ray, sales break six-figures in June {Engadget HD}
Jul 24th 2008 4:36AM @Nfinity If the Japanese are buying recorders at the rate they are then the format is selling faster than the Nintendo Wii. At this rate they'll exceed one million recorder / players this year alone in Japan. Maybe this qualifies as a failure in your mind, but as you appear to be in the middle of an epic meltdown and full blown denial, this is of no real consequence. Its hard to see even why you are getting so worked up about it if you own 100 blu discs as you've claimed in the past. You weren't lying by any chance about that were you?
Survey finds most Americans think in-store movie renting is fading out {Engadget HD}
Jul 24th 2008 4:27AM I think in-store renting is fading out, partly because you have digital but also Netflix and even Blockbuster have their own delivery service. Who needs to go to the store when they'll send you the videos through the post? I certainly do not believe digital is going to be the preferred format for ownership for a very, very, very long time. Maybe resident trolls like Nfinity will buy substandard videos locked to their XBox 360 or whichever device for the same price as a DVD but no one else will.
All-in-one PCs and internet TV to invigorate HTPC market, says study {Engadget HD}
Jul 21st 2008 4:18AM This seems worse to me than sticking a DVD player into a TV. The more moving parts and complexity, the more chance of the whole thing going boom. And even if it doesn't, PCs rapidly become obsolete. That spiffy new HTPC will look distinctly mouldy in a few years hence.
A Star is Born getting 6K makeover: is it worthwhile? {Engadget HD}
Jul 18th 2008 4:41AM If you have the means to do a 6K preservation, then hey why not? The better the resolution you have to preserve the image, all the better for future generations.
Expect The Dark Knight's IMAX sequences on Blu-ray {Engadget HD}
Jul 17th 2008 10:34AM If it appears around Christmas you can guarantee you will be able to pick up a brand name blu ray player for less than $400.
Amazon Video on Demand store streams video, launches today {Engadget HD}
Jul 17th 2008 10:13AM Looks like the digital download purchases and perhaps even rentals flopped so they're going to going to go down a subscription / streaming route instead.
Chinese Blu-ray players revealed at SinoCES {Engadget HD}
Jul 17th 2008 5:43AM New players are only going to be either 1.1 or 2.0. Since the only difference between those profiles is internet connectivity I don't see any issue with that at all. Most people just don't need to hook their players up to the web, either because they don't have broadband, or they don't want to trail cat5 through their house, or they just want to watch the movies. I don't even get why these pathetic arguments about it are still going on. If you want the BD-live stuff, buy a player containing it, otherwise don't. It seems the only people moaning about it are disgruntled HD DVD fans - a platform which conclusively demonstrated what a damp squib network connectivity was.
Sony's $400 BDP-S350 Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player now shipping {Engadget HD}
Jul 17th 2008 4:32AM I read somewhere that its profile 2.0 ready but you need to add external memory (i.e. a USB memory stick) to actually enable it. Can someone confirm if this is what the box or the manual says?
Sony's $400 BDP-S350 Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player now shipping {Engadget HD}
Jul 17th 2008 4:30AM @ScareyJ, HD DVD players only sold for $100 to clear them out of the warehouses. The format had already lost by that point and everyone from retailers to Toshiba wanted to get rid of them as fast as possible. The MSRP for the A3 was $299. Slashing $200 off the price certainly wouldn't have happened if HD DVD had won the war. Instead we'd be talking about the abundance of $100 Blu Ray players and your opposite number in the Blu camp would probably be making the same vacuous argument.
Chinese Blu-ray players revealed at SinoCES {Engadget HD}
Jul 17th 2008 4:19AM These players are going to be rebranded and sold under different names. I doubt the internals are any different at all and the only difference between models is the casings.
