Sony's $400 Profile 2.0 BDP-S550 Blu-ray player now shipping {Engadget HD}

Oct 11th 2008 12:39PM Although I recommend monoprice for digital cables, for analog I think they fall short and recommend Blue Jeans. High quality, no hype, and cheaper that you can buy the raw parts and tools (unless you amortize the tools price over dozens of cables).

Starz Play content added to Netflix's streaming library {Engadget HD}

Oct 3rd 2008 7:25PM Another complaint: The movies are not presented in widescreen. IE, look at No Country for Old Men. It's a 2.35:1 movie. And in Starx/Netflix Watch Instantly it is 1.78:1! Ugh.

Oct 1st 2008 2:39AM Cool. Now if they get some HD content, we're really cooking. As it is, the quality looks like bootleg 800MB mkv versions of DVDs from bittorrent.

VUDU readying Blu-ray quality rentals {Engadget HD}

Sep 11th 2008 12:15AM Two day turnaround from Netlflix? I'm still waiting for some Blu-rays I added to my queue weeks ago.

VUDU readying Blu-ray quality rentals {Engadget HD}

Sep 10th 2008 12:51AM Hmmm.. Maybe YOU could scoot to Blockbuster and find what you want on Blu-ray. I watched the entire selection of my local store in my first month's subscription.

*If* Vudu gets the quality right, and their selection includes not only new releases but catalog titles, I'll get getting a box.

Oppo joins the Blu-ray revolution with BDP S83 deck {Engadget HD}

Sep 6th 2008 3:16AM With a planned release date of Winter 09, according to the HT Guys at the HDTV podcast.

Does "winter 09" mean Jan 09, or Jan 10?

I'll bet the price is close to $500 but that it outperforms most $1k+ players.

Think about it. Oppo DVD players are "cheap" but still three times the name brand budget players. But way better than many more expensive players.

Comcast set to begin bandwidth capping come October 1st {Engadget HD}

Sep 3rd 2008 12:56AM [The sound of Vudu's model looking more problematic....] Gosh, this wouldn't be about stomping out the competition for content delivery, would it?

Comcast set to begin bandwidth capping come October 1st {Engadget HD}

Sep 3rd 2008 12:55AM Online gaming uses bandwidth. If you have already hit the limit because of watching HD movies on your Vudu box (which is a bittorrentlike device, meaning youre uploading and downloading stuff to and from other users all the timing and eating up your bandwidth all day every day), your online gaming will be impacted since Comcast says they can shut you off.

Criterion Collection uses PS3 as reference Blu-ray player {Engadget HD}

Aug 14th 2008 12:28PM While it's great to know what the Criterion setup is -- and I'm glad I have a PS3 because I'll be buying many of their Blu-rays -- but let's not forget that their last foray into a new format (DVD) was pretty poor: middling transfers, non-anamorphic discs, cropped images, etc. It took them a few years to really get it right. I hope that things progress better this time.

All-classical music concert HD channel in the works {Engadget HD}

Aug 14th 2008 12:17PM Awesome!

Here's hoping DISH carries this channel, since I really miss this kind of programming now that they stopped carrying Voom, which used to have stuff like this quite frequently.
