Apple updates Time Capsule and Airport Extreme with internet sharing {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Mar 3rd 2009 1:35PM With the older version of Airport Extreme you can access files over the internet. I have the previous model with a 2 TB external drive connected via USB. It's set up as a shared disk and I can access it easily on my network, but I can also mount it over the internet using AFP and the router's IP address. When connecting, I'm prompted for authentication then it mounts on my desktop like any other server drive.

On my network, this drive also acts as my Time Capsule. I created a Backup partition on that 2 TB drive and in the Time Capsule system preferences, I simply selected that as my disk. In the Backup partition, it creates a disk image that it mounts to my computer, backs up my machine, then automatically unmounts the disk image when finished. I essentially created my own time capsule with my own external drive.

I've had this setup working since this past summer when I bought all the gear.

Apple ProRes QuickTime Decoder 1.0 for Mac and Windows {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Aug 29th 2008 11:55AM @ Michael Rose

I'm not sure of the distinction between lossless and virtually lossless. Seems like you're splitting hairs here. What I can say about ProRes is that, "lossless" or not, you cannot tell the difference between footage that's ProRes vs Uncompressed. The alpha channel would be nice but not necessary (you still cannot have transparency on tape) and 4:4:4 is rare on a day-to-day basis for so much HD post-production that most HD users will never need 4:4:4.

Check out this split screen comparison:

Apple ProRes QuickTime Decoder 1.0 for Mac and Windows {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Aug 29th 2008 2:05AM ProRes is lossless. Many TV shows and commercials are produced and broadcast after being mastered in this format. It's efficient for storage and still looks amazing when transfered to tape. However, ProRes has always been compatible with Quicktime if you have the AppleProRes422.component installed.

TWC posts rollout schedule for HD channels in Southern California {Engadget HD}

Jul 18th 2008 1:08PM I think they are. I've tried to watch some On Demand content but I get an error message about 2-way communication problems. I'm thinking that when they add the new channels we'll see a firmware upgrade that will change how the content is accessed.

What happened: AT&T on iTunes activation problems {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jul 15th 2008 2:41PM The AT&T store I went to in Westwood (where UCLA is in Los Angeles) only had 50 iPhones in stock to begin with Friday morning. I was the lucky one who got the last black 16 gig model and I was only the 30th person in line. iPhone was in hand at 10:15 AM that morning.
