TWC posts rollout schedule for HD channels in Southern California {Engadget HD}
Jul 18th 2008 1:08PM I think they are. I've tried to watch some On Demand content but I get an error message about 2-way communication problems. I'm thinking that when they add the new channels we'll see a firmware upgrade that will change how the content is accessed.

Jul 15th 2008 2:41PM The AT&T store I went to in Westwood (where UCLA is in Los Angeles) only had 50 iPhones in stock to begin with Friday morning. I was the lucky one who got the last black 16 gig model and I was only the 30th person in line. iPhone was in hand at 10:15 AM that morning.

Mar 9th 2008 4:41PM You mean HD-SDI? HD-DSI is nonsense. I know that's what the source says, but come on, you guys know better than that.
Motorola: over 15 million HD set-tops served in 2007 {Engadget HD}
Feb 28th 2008 4:48AM I have Time Warner in Los Angeles which issues Motorola STBs. Although the box supports HD media, the interface is not HD and its disgusting, too, but that's another story. I've had 3 different boxes that I've exchanged for various technical problems like freezing on a channel for hours on end. In Moto's defense, it's hard for me to differentiate problems between the hardware and software since this is a closed platform. I'm just worried about whether the are producing the highest quality box for us to use. Since most cable subscribers rent the box, we're at Moto's mercy.
How would you change the Apple TV (take 2)? {Engadget}
Feb 15th 2008 8:12PM Add two CableCARD ports and Apple's own Tivo knock-off interface that can also port saved content to any other Apple product for when you're away from home.

Jan 5th 2008 1:14AM Betamax failed as a format for reasons beyond just a failed marketplace. For one, Sony wouldn't allow the video quality to suffer vs. a greater run time for each cassette. VHS manufacturers created LP and SLP speeds that could store up to 6 hours. Another conspiracy theory is that other tape manufacturers didn't want Sony's technology to become another standard like their previously successful 3/4" tapes; thus they avoided working together.
The HDDVD and Blu-ray debate also has many layers at play. Sure, WHV's decision could be the tipping point, but other manufacturing and authoring costs plus hardware potential hold some value in the equation.
It will be nice to have a single format, but remember, as technology inevitably becomes cheaper, combo players could eventually be affordable for everyone, making the war meaningless.
