SlingCatcher now officially for sale {Engadget}

Oct 9th 2008 12:44AM I don't think they are that big. Also, that picture is the slingcatcher which is different.

However, to answer your question, there are a lot of reason. One, those little tiny tv tuners you are talking about are usually the USB ones. They little usb generally don't have hardware encoding. It lets the computer do that. The Slingbox needs to have a processor to handle that. It also needs a larger amount of memory to store the file info before sending it over the internet. It also usually has more input than just the standard coax that a normal usb tv tuner has. Component, and composite take up more space physically. It also needs it own network card to connect to the internet. It also needs to have its own power supply whereas the tv tuner uses the computers power supply. In other words, the Slingbox is not just a tv tuner, and an entirely self contained computer.

Seinfeld goes HD on TBS HD {Engadget HD}

Sep 3rd 2008 11:20PM People did comparisions on avs. It looks like they cropped some and opened some. They probably didn't have enough extra on the sides to make it 16x9 so they cut the extra. Also, people are saying it is likely a decision Sony made to air the 16:9 version, and not TBS.

Hulu refreshes HD Gallery with 720p TV shows {Engadget HD}

Aug 5th 2008 3:34PM Actually a ton of their stuff is 480p. I know I watched the first season of angel all in 480p. Nearly everything I have seen on their recently has had 480p available. Hopefully 720p will become as ubiquitous.

Aug 2nd 2008 8:52PM From everything I am reading online, I am getting the feeling Best Buy will be getting it Aug 17 and Sprint stores won't have it until Sept 2. It would make as the conflicting reports make sense.

Poll: Do you utilize picture-in-picture functionality? {Engadget HD}

Jun 21st 2008 12:13PM I only use it on occasion for sporting events, and on my one TV without a DVR. I use it occasionally on sporting events to monitor two games. Other than that, I will use it see when what I am watching comes back from commercial while I am scanning other channels.

Madden press event is Sony-exclusive {PS3 Fanboy}

Jun 12th 2008 4:42PM NHL 07 was completely designed on a new engine(I can't speak for the other games). Not every year is going to be an entire game update, and NHL 08 did make some good improvements(AHL teams), much improved AI. NHL 08 is generally considered one of the best sports games among people I have talked to, both in real life and online. Madden OTOH, i would agree feels like continuous roster updates.

IBM creates new supercomputer with Cell processor {PS3 Fanboy}

Jun 9th 2008 7:32PM I go to RPI and we built a super computer a yearish ago. Our CIO teaches one classe and he talked about how IBM(who was part of the Joint Venture to build it) kept trying to get them to use cell processors. The problem was, while they were more powerful, the added power was no inline with the added cost, plus they use a ton more power. In other words, they made little sense unless space was a issue. Otherwise, your better off with more of other processors. They did end up with a smaller part of the computer using cell processors though because they do have some interesting properties. I wonder if the cost is more in line with similar processors now.
