Blu-ray releases on October 28th 2008 {Engadget HD}

Oct 28th 2008 8:59PM Exactly! What happened to Baraka?

Baraka "is the finest video disc I have ever viewed or ever imagined", according to Ebert, and "'Baraka' by itself is sufficient reason to acquire a Blu-ray player" - and it doesn't even make your list?

Microsoft's New Xbox Experience storage "solution": Free memory cards, discounted hard drives {Engadget}

Oct 13th 2008 11:54PM While that DIY approach does work - it *will* get your arse banned on XBL damn quick.

Microsoft's New Xbox Experience storage "solution": Free memory cards, discounted hard drives {Engadget}

Oct 13th 2008 11:51PM 2001: MS releases Xbox with built-in HDD
2005: Xbox costs MS over $4B
2006: Sony releases PS3 with built-in HDD
2008: PS3 costs Sony over $3B so far

Now you know why the Core/Arcade exists, and why MS are charging outrageously for the add-ons. Yeah OK, it's over-simplified, but MS did say the HDD was the biggest non-reducible cost in the original Xbox. And tbh, compared to PS3, the lack of a standard HDD doesn't seem to have harmed the games much.

NICT, JVC Victor team up on no-glasses-needed 3D HDTV {Engadget}

Oct 7th 2008 4:12AM They're very different approaches. The QuadHD one is lenticular, so AFAICT there are a limited number of viewing positions, and you only get half the horizontal resolution (which is still 1920 pixels, can't complain).

This one apparently has a large number of projectors (the article seems to suggest it has 50?!), each of which projects a slightly different angle view of the subject. I suppose you still get the stereo "3D effect", but you can also actually change your parallax and look *around* the object (within limits), and see details that are obscured from other angles. You can't do this without headtracking, on most other displays. It sounds quite cool, but probably impractical for any motion (imagine the bandwidth needed for 50 simultaneous full-HD image streams).

Anthem chooses CEDIA to reveal 225 integrated amplifier {Engadget HD}

Sep 5th 2008 10:41AM If you think true audiophiles would be more interested in a fancy phono preamp stage than an expensive SACD player, you must have a different definition of "audiophile" to me.

While there is still a great deal of superb music on vinyl, anyone who still thinks the sound is comparable in any way to a decent SACD, is confusing quality with nostalgia.

Metareview - Spore (PC) {Joystiq}

Sep 5th 2008 6:00AM ... You haven't actually played it yet, have you?

Metareview - Spore (PC) {Joystiq}

Sep 5th 2008 5:56AM Bah. Counter-Strike got 88. Starcraft and Diablo II got 88. Halo, UT3, Doom II & 3, Psychonauts, Dungeon Siege and many other excellent games all got *less* than 88.

All Spore is suffering from is hype backlash. It could never meet such impossibly high expectations, so this is just the normal dip after the peak.

I've been playing it for ~7 hours so far, I'm nowhere near finished (the space stage is a truly huge sandbox), and I don't regret my purchase for an instant.

Sep 5th 2008 5:28AM Easy. Just build the one thing that subdues any dongmonster. :-)

So far I've fought off or tamed herds of toilets, disembodied hearts and Marge Simpsons, but thankfully nothing I'd have to explain carefully to my kids.

PAX 2008 hands-on: Spore, have we seen enough already? {Joystiq}

Sep 2nd 2008 11:56PM Well, I'm enjoying it - though I'm only partway through the Creature stage so far.

Yes, it's available over here already. For once, Australians jump in early :-)

Jonathan Blow: Microsoft made Braid demo shorter {Joystiq}

Aug 24th 2008 11:43PM The first level was Super Mario Bros with time rewinding and pretty pictures. The second and later levels are nothing like SMB.

If you haven't played *both* games (and not just the demo), don't even bother trying to compare the two.
