Poll: Are you sold on Blu-ray Profile 2.0? {Engadget HD}
Sep 20th 2008 3:07PM These 1.1 players are not about keeping the costs down saving $2 worth of flash memory and a ten cent Ethernet port. They are about making sure you come back to buy a 2.0 player later. Already Paramount/Dreamworks is putting out good stuff with Iron Man.
Poll: Do you still visit the store for movie rentals? {Engadget HD}
Aug 8th 2008 4:23PM I use Blockbuster Online ($1/mo cheaper than Netflix) for Blu-Ray's plus local stores from those movies I gotta have and can't wait for. As usual you geeks got it wrong again. You only think mom and pops and Blockbuster/Hollywood for the non-Netflix stuff. You forgot about public libraries and those $1/day kiosks at grocery stores and McDonald's. Moreover, you didn't mention cable/sat PPV and OnDemand. $1/day for a new release SD DVD is cheaper than than most other options out there.
Onkyo insists gold is the new black, releases TX-NA906X, TX-SA806X receivers from its vault {Engadget HD}
Aug 7th 2008 10:27AM They look good, but like everything else that is gold, copper, brass, bronze, oiled bronze, matte aluminum, they match nothing else in anyone's rack.
Ask Engadget HD: What's the best USB HD tuner? {Engadget HD}
Jul 31st 2008 2:28PM Check out the Kworld tuners. They aren't the best in terms of PQ. However, they work well, and they're usually on sale at Fry's. QAM? Most cable providers only put the OTA stuff in the clear anyway.
Ask Engadget HD: What's the best short-to-mid-range OTA antenna? {Engadget HD}
Jul 24th 2008 10:01AM I wasn't very impressed with my TERK HDTVi at all.
The Radio Shack RS 1892 (UFO) delivers much more impressive results. The AVS indoor antenna thread rates the RS 1892 as the best non-discontinued indoor antenna.

Best Buy offering DTV converter box refunds for sales tax oversight {Engadget HD}
Jul 19th 2008 10:03AM Likewise--I got two refund checks of $3.30 each.
Kodak Theatre HD Player: at last, a reason to sit on your ass and stare at the TV {Engadget HD}
Jul 10th 2008 9:59AM I still wonder why anyone would buy a $300 media extender when they can get a gaming console for roughly the same amount that does the same thing plus plays 1080p high definition movies.
Blue Ray Technologies opening America's largest Blu-ray Disc mastering facility {Engadget HD}
Jul 2nd 2008 9:13AM I noticed that they were talking about stamping BD-RE (rewritable discs). Is this a way to get around the stupid restriction that all stamped Blu-Ray discs have to have AACS licensing and protection? One of the things that drove many indies and porn producers to HD DVD during the format war was not having to pay for AACS.
Poll: Do you tune into OTA programming? {Engadget HD}
Jun 29th 2008 11:10AM OTA is the way to go even if you have access to a multichannel provider. (I have access to both sat providers, cable and IPTV.) Most of the multichannel providers don't carry all the HD and digital stations. None of them carry all of the subchannels. I don't think any multichannel provider provides the CW affiliate in HD in Austin. That's our best looking station (no subchannels and 1080i). Nope, Blu-Ray/HDM has the best PQ. That is closely followed by C-band and OTA. OTA is free and a no brainer.
Sharp still sees lots of life in LCD, brushes OLED off like it's paparazzi {Engadget HD}
Jun 29th 2008 11:02AM There was a time when plasma and rear projection manufacturers felt they had a big size advantage over LCD. I'm sure they don't feel that way now.
