'Avatar' Controversy: Did James Cameron Steal the Story? {Cinematical}

Oct 29th 2009 2:11PM It cracks me up that people think that their stories are original. We've been telling ourselves the same story since we figured out how to communicate.

As far as inventive details for those stories? Did William Gibson try to sue the W. Bro's for The Matrix? No, he said, "Cool, my work is so ingrained in culture that it's become fair game for others to riff." (paraphrasing)

I don't doubt that "Call Me Joe" was Cameron's influence, maybe even direct inspiration, but I can guarantee you he's created a world with his signature all over it.

Review: Saw VI {Cinematical}

Oct 23rd 2009 11:56AM It's been a long, long time since I've gone to a theater to watch a "horror" movie…and this franchise seems to epitomize why.

I know this has been said a million times, but I'm just baffled as to how we as a society are okay with handing torture-porn an "R" rating.

God forbid a "proper" theater shows consenting adults' genitalia, but if you want to show their insides being ripped-out…go for!

Barnes & Noble Nook's first close-up (now with video!) {Engadget}

Oct 20th 2009 5:28PM I really like the idea of e-book readers, paper holds no real romance for me…but until e-ink screens get somewhere even approaching as "white" as even grungy old newspapers, I just can't imagine them being comfortable for extended, normal reading. Am I wrong?

Interview: 'Terminator Salvation' Director McG {Cinematical}

May 23rd 2009 4:43PM This movie is due more credit than most critics are giving it. It's certainly a far deal better than the dreadful T3.

I highly doubt the "black" ending would have worked, but the cheesy one they went with was the weakest part of the film, by far. (Won't spoil it.) In all fairness, the ending to a story that has no ending is pretty tricky to pull off and keep Hollywood "handlers" happy enough to let you make another.

Did 'Watchmen' Fail? And Why? {Cinematical}

Mar 16th 2009 9:25PM Watchmen is niche, cult, difficult material presented in a rated R package. It's not for the masses, and I'm pleasantly surprised it has done as well as it has at the box office.

The value to WB of bringing this property to film is so much more than domestic box office. This is a franchise that will continue to generate revenue for a very long time, and the theatrical exhibition just juices the appetite for everything else.

New iPod shuffle requires extra adapter for third-party headphones {Engadget}

Mar 11th 2009 2:10PM It would be a brilliant marketing move to sell these guys with a $10 iTunes card for $50 @ Walmart, Target, Best Buy. The number of new, young users brought into the iTunes ecosystem would be massive. Users that would not only buy more music for the convenience rather than stealing, but also upgrade to more capable iPods in the future.

New iPod shuffle requires extra adapter for third-party headphones {Engadget}

Mar 11th 2009 2:07PM For a certain subset of users this little guy will be perfect. Right now, you must be content with Apple's headphones. Having to use an adapter definitely makes the whole exercise pointless. In the future, though, headphone manufacturers can include the controls directly. I don't see it as an "epic fail" just typical Apple thinking. They design certain products to be targeted very specifically and have never given a damn about backward compatibility. There are so many other iPod options, especially the Nano, that I doubt this new design will alienate that many users.
