Microsoft's training materials teach Best Buy employees how to trash Linux {Engadget}

Sep 8th 2009 12:37PM The manager is usually even less informed. I've gotten "sir, I'm the best buy employee here, I've done the training I know what I'm talking about"

I guess I should've done a .ppt 20 min training module instead of getting an engineering degree...

Microsoft's training materials teach Best Buy employees how to trash Linux {Engadget}

Sep 8th 2009 12:12PM best buy is the new radio shack, uninformed consumers truly believe its the only place to go for electronics and (more frighteningly) advice. Their employees are some of the most under trained with regards to actual tech knowledge then any elec store I've ever seen. The vast majority of them take ZERO initiative to learn about what they're selling, other then in the video game depts...

They resort to brute force and shear size to drive their sales not educating the consumer or taking into account what is actually needed to accomplish the required task. I've heard such things as "your pictures will be clearer with a larger memory card" and "gold plated HDMI is the only way to have HD picture and sound" at the tenley town location here in DC.

While I'm one of the first people to say that recently Apple sucks with its close-minded approach to how you can use YOUR hardware you bought from them and windows 7 is simply glorious, this is just another skewed marketing tactic best buy is doing (or supporting if its a microsoft-led initiative, just as bad) to get the their (mindless-drone) customers to buy what their biggest partners are pushing at them. 75% of the people who walk into a best buy for a laptop could use Ubuntu linux for ALL of their needs if they are given 20 minutes of training. The niche users who actually NEED photoshop, gamers, etc are the ones that probably couldn't use linux day to day.

(Quickly) educate the customer and let THEM make the decision, if its the wrong one they have nobody to blame but themselves (and can just install another OS...)

/end rant
