Editorial: Hey, AT&T -- drop lawsuits, not calls {Engadget}

Nov 14th 2009 12:59PM I switched over from AT&T to Verizon last week. This is in the Phoenix metro area. AT&T coverage has been very bad for me, at my house I was barely able to make calls. Now I have Verizon and calls are much better. No drops, and I can ALWAYS make a call.
Take that, AT&T

Nov 6th 2009 11:32AM Does this require a data plan ? Seems like it does not ? not clear to me.

Are DVRs actually going to save the network TV model? {Engadget}

Nov 3rd 2009 12:00PM They must be on crack. I use Windows media center (7) and I skip over commercials ALL the time. It is so easy and quick to jump forward or back that it's very easy to do.
On top of that, there is software out there that you can install and will skip commercials for you. The replaytv even had auto commercial skip. Oh yeah !
Windows 7 MC, the BEST dvr out there.

Ask Engadget HD: Is it (still) a good time to buy a TiVo? {Engadget HD}

Oct 30th 2009 1:47PM Build a media center (W7) and install the CETON cable card tuner that is coming out in January.
You will get 4 (four) tuners. It can use SDV. It requires only 1 (one) multistream cable card.
This will be the perfect setup hands down. Tivo doesn't even come near it.

Price wise, yeah, Tivo is cheaper short term. Long term the media center will be cheaper since you don't need a subscription. Granted, you might break even at the end of it's life but you will have a much better system that can be updated, tweaked, hacked you name it.Just look at all the plugins that are there now for media center. Can only get better.

Oct 27th 2009 1:03PM Is there any extra cost when I use this from my at&t phone ?

How to automatically skip commercials in Windows 7 Media Center {Engadget HD}

Oct 23rd 2009 3:35PM Thanks for the great write-up btw. I knew it was possible, just had to found a good howto until this !

Last question, how does sleep mode affect this ?
My media center goes to sleep when not in use (and now with 7 seems to not be able to be woken up anymore by my xbox360, bug?)
It's set for 30 minutes time out.

Oct 23rd 2009 3:23PM What kind of processing times does it have ?
on SD as well as on HD recordings.
I know it would depend on the hardware a lot so a rough estimate would work. Say a 2.4 ghz dual core amd with a single 640gb harddrive. no raid or any of that.

This sounds pretty slick. I used to have replaytv which had it built in. Worked quite well 90% of the time and was easy to override.

Ask Engadget HD: Would an SSD upgrade help my HTPC performance? {Engadget HD}

Oct 15th 2009 2:00PM If you want your HTPC to work 'better'/faster , it would be a complete waste of $$ if you ask me.
Any decent pc with decent mechanical harddrive is more than adequate in handling htpc traffic, yes even HD.
I can record 2 HDHomerun High def streams and one SD stream and use an extender on a 2.4 ghz amd processor without any issues. All from a 640GB seagate. No issues.
Now if it was for lower power usage/heat/noise that is something else. Even in that area you would be much cheaper in investing in quiet fans.
