Doro brings immensely simplistic phones to the US via Centennial Wireless {Engadget Mobile}
Nov 22nd 2008 10:09PM Centennial is selling the HandleEasy 330 for $39.99 with a 30-month (you read that right) contract... about $10-20 more than the average basic dumbphone offered by Centennial. It's not as cheap as some of their other phones (all of which are AT&T or T-Mobile leftovers from 6 months to 1 year ago), but it's not as expensive as an N95 or a Touch Diamond.
Still, I wonder if AT&T will pick up this phone. After are, they are in the process of buying Centennial...
DISH Network cans six retailers for sketchy behavior {Engadget HD}
Nov 21st 2008 9:45AM I noticed that several of these retailers that were kicked out were in highly competitive markets with FiOS (Fort Wayne) or U-verse (Dallas, Austin) in addition to the cable incumbent. Maybe they were doing anything to push a sale (lying about the competition, DISH's packages, and such).
Kudos to DISH Network for protecting their reputation.
BlackBerry 9530 Storm pricing revealed on VZW staging server {Engadget}
Nov 11th 2008 9:34AM VZW typically does a $70 mail-in rebate debit card for BlackBerries, so chances are that the Storm will cost $149 after a $70 rebate. Which will be a very competitive price.
BlackBerry 9530 Storm pricing revealed on VZW staging server {Engadget Mobile}
Nov 11th 2008 9:19AM Let's see...
The BlackBerry Storm will probably be $219 with 2-year contract.
Then VZW throws in a $70 mail-in rebate debit card (they always use a $70 rebate for BlackBerries).
This means the final price will probably be $149... SWEET! Watch out iPhone and G1!
Sprint posts Q3 net loss of $326 million, sees 1.3 million subs leave {Engadget Mobile}
Nov 7th 2008 11:24AM Could we see Sprint being bought out?
To me, the most likely candidate is a cableco consortium consisting of Comcast/Time Warner/Bright House so they can compete with the AT&T/VZ "quad-play" and the telcos' forthcoming wireless integration plans. Either that, or Hutchinson Telecom of Hong Kong (who operates the 3 brand worldwide, and is flush with cash).
Still, if anyone buys Sprint, they would be wise to ditch Hesse's WiMax pet project and go for LTE using the Sprint and Nextel spectrum (read: kill iDEN) to avoid another CDMA/GSM standards war.
Branding overkill: Verizon's Omnia, Saga, Touch Pro, and Renown all pictured {Engadget Mobile}
Oct 27th 2008 10:23AM As for the Omnia... it's a sweet-looking phone. Looking forward to getting either that or the Storm... my RAZR is getting long in the tooth, and even though my contract is up, I'd rather wait for a decent phone than get one of the current devices from VZW (and no, switching carriers is not an option... AT&T coverage sucks, Sprint drops calls like crazy, T-Mo doesn't have 3G yet, and Centennial is a joke).
But doesn't the jeweler Bvlgari make a popular perfume called "Omnia"? My first thought when I saw the name was that perfume and its derivatives like Omnia Crystalline, Omnia Amethyste, and Omnia Jade. Is this the Verizon Wireless store or Sephora we're talking about here?
Colleges throwing in high-def amenities to lure in millennials {Engadget HD}
Aug 9th 2008 11:45AM You were lucky to even have Comcrap basic cable!
I went to a religious university for a year and we didn't even have cable...each dorm was hooked up to a central antenna. Not for moral objections, mind you, but because "the cost for cable was too much". (And this was in 2005!)
Lexus cancels next-gen SC, Toyota cancels next Avalon {Autoblog}
Jul 12th 2008 2:55PM I see a lot of Avalons around here... but then again, I live in a Midwestern city where large sedans of all kinds sell very well (and is also home to the #1 Buick salesguy in America). And Avalon owners are also very loyal.
If Toyota takes the Avalon away like Kodachrome was yanked from Paul Simon, I'll expect revolts at the Toyota dealers here from a bunch of retirees and executive account managers.
Verizon "in talks" to buy Alltel for $27 billion {Engadget Mobile}
Jun 5th 2008 10:18AM Actually, Alltel spun off their landline ops as Windstream Communications a few years back... so Alltel has been a "pure-play" wireless company for quite some time now.
Verizon "in talks" to buy Alltel for $27 billion {Engadget Mobile}
Jun 4th 2008 6:48PM If this merger goes through, Chad will get a "lateral move" to the Test Guy's answerman!
