Toshiba knows no shame, plans to release super-resolution DVD player {Engadget}

May 30th 2008 3:34PM So this player will Super Up-Convert?

I guess we'll all marvel at how this new player really SUC's.

Mar 4th 2008 2:18AM Question: How come you never hear an electrical engineer debating the merits of expensive interconnects?

Answer: Because they know that if you have proper insulation and solder points that copper is copper, and the electrons don't care about anything else.

Verizon FiOS TV goes to Oregon {Engadget HD}

Dec 14th 2007 6:26PM I negotiated a great rate with Comcast, and the Fios HD channels are almost identical to what Comcast has right now, so I'm going to wait until 2008 to switch over to Fios. I'm really excited they're here now though!

Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending November 25th, 2007 {Engadget HD}

Nov 30th 2007 4:35PM You don't have to count 100% of the disc sales from all vendors when doing a statistical sample. Statistically, Wal-Mart should trend relatively close to the sample. I don't have an exact source to cite, but I believe Wal-Mart is 3rd in HDM sales behind Best Buy and Amazon.

Also, if trying to argue that counting Wal-Mart would have helped HD-DVD because of the A2 sale and in turn those individuals buying HD-DVD's as well, Sy makes a good point in his post:

"Walmart had tons of special on Blu-ray last week, including the 15 free Blu-ray titles with the purchase of a PS3. Those 10 free movies would of counted in the survey."

Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending November 25th, 2007 {Engadget HD}

Nov 30th 2007 3:29PM Who still says there is a format war? All I see is HD-DVD getting pwned by Blu-ray weekly. HD-DVD'ers always talk about their hardware sales, but if they don't compete with disc sales, then there is no format war, only people with useless $99 boxes they bought at Wal-Mart.

HD DVD and Blu-ray NOT released on March 6th, 2007 {Engadget HD}

Mar 5th 2007 5:45PM To be technically correct, HD DVD has no releases this week and Blu-Ray is realeasing Destiny's Child: Live From Atlanta, which is next to nothing, but still more than HD-DVD.

Check out www.dvdempire.com for future releases on both formats, and sales comparisons to date between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

Samsung's HL-S5679W LED DLP gets real {Engadget}

May 5th 2006 5:56PM Contrast, which is also called Picture, sets the amount of White level and determines the amount of brightness of white in the screen. A low level setting of the Contrast produces a dim picture. A high amount of the same setting actually reduces detail and distorts the image.

The Brightness or Black level is used to set the amount of black. As confusing as this labeling may be, this is how things got started at the age of television so we are nonetheless stuck with it.
