Porsche calls it quits for Carrera GT {Autoblog}
Jan 2nd 2006 12:44PM Last year 2 guys died in a Carrera GT at California Speedway. Reportedly they hit a fence side-on at 100mph, and despite wearing belts and helmets, and despite the fact that the car looked intact after the smash, both died. Has anyone seen a report on why such a simple-looking accident was fatal? Did the car's carbon-fiber construction contribute?

Dec 27th 2005 8:56AM Here's a really low-cost way into HDTV: go to Costco and buy the 26 inch widescreen Toshiba HD set for $450, add the Toshiba upconverting DVD player for $80 (including the HDMI cable!) then hook up to whichever HD cable service is feeding your area. The TV also gives great SD pictures from its own tuner. The DVD player can be hacked easily (using just the remote control) to make it region-free, and will play PAL DVDs, outputting NTSC signals automatically (Google that for details).
HDTV for Chistmas on a budget {Engadget HD}
Dec 3rd 2005 3:54PM I have the 26 inch Toshiba CRT HDTV, which Costco now sells for $449. I added HD cable from Adelphia (Motorola set top box) and the results are excellent, even in NTSC mode. There appears to be a line doubler in the NTSC circuitry as the set shows no raster. Its HD output is selectable: 540p or 1080i. Weighs a lot, though (80 pounds) but no lamp to worry about. Optimal viewing distance is small: about 6 feet.
