VMWare Fusion - 50% off, today only {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Dec 1st 2008 5:36PM Because many users have *some* applications that are better suited to BootCamp, but *most* of their applications are just fine in VMWare Fusion or Parallels. So, why have two separate Windows installations when you don't have to? It makes *perfect* sense for plenty of people.
Live Mesh now available for Mac OS X {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Nov 26th 2008 3:03PM Dropbox is quite fast. Also, your files actually *live* on your various computers. There's a copy, with the various list of changes, on S3, but you will still have your files if Dropbox or Amazon S3 suddenly disappear tomorrow...so in that sense, it's extremely safe. Plus, you have full access to your files when not connected to the Internet.
Transmit 3.6.7 is available {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Nov 26th 2008 1:01PM What he said.
And it's not just lots of files, it's large files as well. When I have to FTP proofs to a book publisher at work, Cyberduck would choke every time part way through. Transmit finishes the job the first time, every time.
The droplets are handy, too, but really just a "nice to have." It's the fact that Cyberduck, while great for smaller files or smaller number of files, can't seem to keep up with larger tasks.
Apple's new "green" notebook ad {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Nov 25th 2008 10:29PM "Unfortunately, Apple has produced a laptop that many will buy to replace an older, less environmentally friendly laptop. There you've got a hidden cost to the environment that nobody's talking about."
You fail to take into account the huge resale market for used Apple computers. There are plenty out there who will buy the older laptop, thus keeping it from the landfills or recycling plants. There are many out there still holding on to very old (in tech terms) PowerBooks, etc.
New Mac OS X malware - OSX_LAMZEV.A {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Sorry, but the facts say otherwise. See the previous comment.
New Mac OS X malware - OSX_LAMZEV.A {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Nov 23rd 2008 4:55PM Yes, the market share argument is a straw man often trotted out by those who don't know what they're talking about.
The simple fact of the matter is, back in the pre-OS X days the Mac had *many* viruses and malware (hundreds of them) that were actually out in the wild and infecting machines. In the OS 9/8/7 days, most Mac users had anti-virus software installed. Norton Anti-Virus was one of the best selling software packages on the Mac. All of this when the Mac had a MUCH smaller market share of an overall much smaller market. This simple fact absolutely obliterates the "market share" straw man.
AAPL hits 52-week low, cries itself to sleep {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Nov 21st 2008 12:11PM Actually, it IS a good time to buy...just don't buy all your shares at once. Buy in small increments to average in your price.
Adventure released for the iPhone {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Nov 19th 2008 11:24AM I think he meant to say it pioneered 4-way smooth scrolling graphical action adventure games, but got lazy and shortened the sentence. ;-)
What Adventure did pioneer, though, was Easter Eggs. Adventure contains the first known Easter Egg (not sure if the iPhone remake contains the Egg or not...) And it was a brilliant Easter Egg, too...I will forever remember the name of the programmer who wrote Adventure thanks to his Easter Egg.
Farewell to a friend: NetRestore goes EOL {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Nov 17th 2008 4:10PM I use NetRestore all the time. All of our images were created with NetRestore Helper, and whenever we use NetRestore to re-image machines all the time. Mike was always very helpful, too, if we had any questions when first using the software. Sad to see such a great tool go EOL.
Belkin's Switch-to-Mac USB Cable {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Nov 12th 2008 4:49PM Yes, I agree: if you have an Apple Store nearby, just buy your computer there and let them do the migration for you. Otherwise, this cable would make sense for a LOT of people.
Understand this is not targeted at people who know what they're doing. If it were as simply as dragging files and folders to an external drive, this solution would never have existed. But I know from years of tech support that MANY people have no freaking clue where things are stored on their computer. The entire concept of a file system is a mystery to a lot of people. There are actually an alarming number of people who think files/documents are stored "in" the program that created them...not in a directory somewhere on their computer. "How can I send you the file? It's 'in' Word....See, right there...under 'Recent Documents'...there it is..."
