Panasonic's DMP-BD30 Blu-ray player falls to $259 -- are high prices behind us? {Engadget HD}
Oct 10th 2008 6:26PM $200.00 is not the sweet spot for most people. $100-150.00 maybe. I have a PS 3, had since day one, but I would never pay $200.00 for essentially an upgraded dvd player (most people think this way). I am an audio and video buff, but the most I would pay is $150.00. For an average bear that don't undertand HDTV technology or even or Digital TV transition, what is bluray for them. Blu HA. This is why $100.00 is the best price.
Blu-ray studios get graded, Sony Pictures comes out on top {Engadget HD}
Oct 9th 2008 10:17AM I am not surprised. I have Casino Royale and Into the Blue and I am blown away by the transfers. They are flawless. Sony and Fox are great. I also have I Robot (Fox), Kongdom of Heaven (Fox), flawless. On the other hand, other movies, Blood Diamond, Babel, MI 2, MI 3 are full of noise, grain and color is not uniform troughout the movies. Anyway, Sony, thank you for keeping your products on the bleeding edge of technology.
Engadget HD Podcast 103 - 09.24.2008 {Engadget HD}
Sep 24th 2008 2:30PM Hi guys,
Thanks for responding to my comment. No, I am not PR, I just proof read my stuff. I know what you mean about the colors, i just like mine turned up a little more to have the image stand out, but it can be adjusted. Second, I have seen Samsung and Sony and was going to buy one of them, but what I meant by not seeing the Philips I meant I saw it in the store with a split connection that feeds hundreds of tvs and very bright overhead lights. Getting it home and watching a blu-ray movie it in a dark room is a diferent story, I really believe that this TV is ahead of its time. Tvs I buy are either Sony or Panasonic, but not after this one. I am not a Philips fanboy, as a matter of fact, Philips was losing it with that Amilight stuff, and Philips is not known for their TVs at all, but I really think people should check it out. Anyway, put it next to your best set, compare, and then shoot it down. Thanks guys.
Engadget HD Podcast 102 - 09.17.2008 {Engadget HD}
Sep 23rd 2008 12:31AM Firts of all, let me just start by saying that Philips 42PFL7403D/27
this is the best TV that ever came out. This TV is not HD, it's beyond HD. This is the closest thing to reality. Actually, it is better than reality because of the more vibrant colors. Thanks to the 120hz and Perfect Pixel Engine, the picture on this TV can not be described by anyone and must be seen. I bought it yesterday without even seeing what it can do (just liked the specs) and was not only impressed, but was scratching my head all day trying to figure out how is it possible to get this good of a picture out of TV. i am not sure if anyone has seen it, buut it is hard to find it on display. Don't buy this TV if you don't have the Blu-Ray player, because this is where it shines. Put in any Blu-Ray movie and stand back 6-7 feet (this is a must) and the way you watch TV will change forever. I never thought that Philips could do it, I was thinking Samsung or Sony, but this is the TV to buy today. I was blown away by the pop and realism. It will make your DVDs look like Blu-Ray but will not have the same in your face effect. The movies on this Philips do not look like movies, but real life, really as if you are there. I've seen Sony and Samsung, but it is the sharpness that I am talikng about. My wife said she could never watch a horror movie on it because she would not sleep for days. This is the way movies are supposed to be seen, and the way director wanted you to see it. Anyway, have you guys checked it out and if not please do.
Sony's XEL-1 OLED TV landing in Europe in 2009? Too little, too late. {Engadget HD}
Aug 14th 2008 9:52AM Couldn't you buy this on ebay, even if you live in china. Hdmi input is universal, right. So what is the point. Besides, I saw this thing in action and was not impressed. The picture looks like any other Sony or Samsung LCD.
87% of PlayStation 3 owners watching Blu-ray movies? Survey says yes {Engadget HD}
Jul 5th 2008 2:52PM O.K. everyone. The real question is, How many people that own a PS3 have an HDTV to play the PS3 on. I bet you that of those 87%, not all have an HDTV, so they are probably watching Blu-Ray movies in SD. So why in the world did they buy a PS3 in the first place, let alone watching Blu-Ray movies in SD. Also, I hear this a lot. Some people say, I can't see the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray. Then I ask myself. But you can see the difference betwen 1080i and 1080p. You paid extra money for something you can't see. This point was brought up in the last Podcast. People pay premiuim for the things they can not see (1080p), but will will not invest money into PS3 or Blu-Ray player, which even a blind man can see the difference between. Maybe they don't like to see a $400.00 price tag. Then all of a sudden, what they have is good enough. Not for long. When they see Blu-Ray movie on a 120Hz Samsung or Sony, they will stop look and listen because you have never, ever seen a picture like that before.
Warner bringing 300 (again), JFK and Casablanca to Blu-ray this fall {Engadget HD}
Jun 26th 2008 10:23AM I don't have a problem with re-releases, but I hope they clean up that swarm of bees graininess on the new release. It is a great movie with great sound and picutre, but it is not demo material with that weird efect.
Matsushita stumbles, LG becomes top plasma supplier once again {Engadget HD}
May 8th 2008 1:12PM The reason they are number one in the world is because the rest of the world can afford LG because they are not high priced or overpriced. In the U.S., very few people buy LG and would rather buy Samsung (the most patents in the last few years and very innovative), Panasonic and Sony. Especially in Eastern Europe, all they push is LG and some off brands that would never sell in U.S. I just want to know, how many Americans prefer LG over Samsung, Panasonic or Sony. I am not saying that LG is a bad brand, they just have not set any benchmarks when it comes to brightness, contrast, color, 120hz or whatever. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Sony XEL-1 estimated to last customers only half as long as expected {Engadget HD}
May 8th 2008 11:17AM Firts of all, I want to say something about this particular model. I saw it in person and the screen was soo small, I could not beleive the price they were charging for a screen twice the size of my psp. They claim 1,000,000 to 1 contras ratio, but it did not look any better than a 21" lcd. I just can't get excited about 11" screen. My psp looks just as good on a 5" screen, but blow the picture up to 55" and we'll see if it still looks that good. I understand that it's new tech, but come on, 11" screen. Wasn't that normal size screen in the 50's. Anyway, and what is up with the stand with all the inputs? If they are going to slim the TV, slim the whole thing. The new slim LCD did it, I don't need a skinny tv and an armoire for the inputs that sits as a piece of furniture. It's like making a super light electric car but have a trailer as a battery.
Xbox 360 HD DVD drives going for €9.99 in Ireland {Engadget HD}
May 6th 2008 10:22AM This is great news for Eastern European countries where electronic items are really expensive. Especcially places like Russia, Bosnia, Latvia, etc. They can enjoy all the movies that are pretty much up to date in HD and actually afford it. Now if they only had an HDTV first. But hey, there are always people that spend too much money on things they care about, so why not blow your 3 month salary on an HDTV and start enjoying the future of entertainment.
