Spotted@E3: Igarashi hard at work on next Castlevania sequel {Joystiq}
Jul 19th 2008 9:25AM I hope the "NEXT" Castlevania is a true SOTN sequel in 2D on the home consoles.

Jul 19th 2008 9:23AM TT,
the difference isn't fanboys not facing the facts; I do agree with most of what you said.
The real difference is the optical successor of DVD was bound to face the same challenges as Blu-Ray is facing now and Blu-Ray's performace to date is considered to be as expected.
You keep putting down Blu-Ray while most people say its doing well and the fanboys are saying its doing awesome.
I know you're trying to balance things and shutdown the fanboys, which is fine by me, but you ty so hard that you lose the "most people" demographic which makes them put you in the hater/bitter demographic even if thats not your intention.
The only thing that really pisses me off is when I see former HD-DVD advocates NOW claim that digital downloads are their new thing because Blue-Ray won. That's just immature because things would be no different now even if HD-DVD had won. Sure their players were cheaper, but even that didn't help them to put up a decent fight against Blu-Ray.
See we can talk nicely :)

Jul 19th 2008 9:05AM Oh common people!
This is not a surprise because of Batman Begins!
Every time these's a big NEW RELEASE or NEW BACK CATALOG RELEASE, we see a great week for Blu-Ray.
This is what we should be expecting and this is good news.
As for you people debating comparisions of VHS vs DVD and DVD vs Blu-Ray:
They are only somewhat comparable:
DVD added much more to the movie experience compared to VHS, Blu-Ray is simply upgrading DVD in quality for the most part. The other difference is Blu-Ray is not valuable unless you have an HD TV and DVD did not have any such requirements. Also gas prices coupled with a looming recession is making people be a bit more careful with their money.
Those are the reasons you can't make a stright comparision but in the scense of 1 format replacing the other, you can make a comparison, but you can't expect the same trend because of the above 3 statements.
E308: FFXIII team will find ways to compress and not 'affect the final product' {Xbox 360 Fanboy}
Jul 17th 2008 8:13AM Ya, Sony's really dropping the ball with bc after they made it out to be such a big feature. I need bc for the Playstation line because I need Castlevania SOTN, Final Fantasy 1, 4 and 6, Chrono Trigger, Capcom VS SNK 2, Marvel VS Capcom 2 and Street Fighter Anniversary Collection. If I buy the 40G or the new August 80G, I'm sol. The reason I bring it up is because I want a 2nd PS3 as a 2nd Blu-Ray player but if MS made a BR 360 AND fixed the RROD FOR REAL, then I'd get the 360 instead.
To be totally honest, Nintendo is the only company doing things right. The DS vs DS Lite is only cosmetic differences, and there's only 1 Wii. This multi sku BS that Sony and MS are doing is stupid and at this point in the game, there should be no new 360s for sale that don't include a hard drive.
Next gen feels so far away but I hope everyone will learn from this gen's mistakes:
Nintendo - way too under powered and no extra storage (backing up to SD isn't extra storage)
MS - reliability is more important then having a year jump start on the market (360's RROD = Windows BSOD and both are unacceptable), all systems need a HD and don't have functional differences between skus
Sony - don't lose you're biggest 3rd party exclusives, don't come out at such a high price (I know BR makes it more expensive and its nice to have a larger capacity but you need to make the system more widley affordable) and don't have functional differences between skus
To all - installs are ok but more effort should be put into making them optional
Sorry, my rant is done, but I do feel better :)
Expect The Dark Knight's IMAX sequences on Blu-ray {Engadget HD}
Jul 17th 2008 7:30AM A must buy on Blu. That's the title to compare Blu vs DVD to and I think we'll see very strong Blu numbers!

Jul 16th 2008 4:26PM You guys are too much. All the ps3 bashing is getting old. All the systems have their good and bad points and everyone should buy what ever is good for them. Come next gen, I'm convinced that MS will run away from Nintendo and Sony and please don't say they already have with the 360 because its success is very isolated.
I have nothing against the 360's library but I do have an issue with the rrod. My brother who works for best buy and ensured that he got a new 360 already has the rrod and it hasn't even been a month yet. This is completely unacceptable and I don't know how people have let MS make this a non issue! I don't know a single person with a 360 that hasn't had to have it replaced and of them almost all have had it replaced multiple times! This is the worst thing to ever happen and yet, MS is doing so well in North America. Ya I know its got the games and the great online services but if I have to cross my fingers before and during game play and likely be without my system for multiple repairs, it would drive me nuts and thats why i got fed up and sold my 360. I'm not a fanboy or bashing, I'm just really surprised that more people haven't dumpped it just for the lack of reliability.
As for FF13, its great news for 360 fans but i'd expct anyone with both systems would get the PS3 version. I just hope 13 is actully a good game because FF has really sucked for a while and the remakes are far better than the new FF games.....and thats just sad. FF4 and 6 will always be the best 2 in the series for me but even with the popularity of 7, why can't they move back to a formula that was actually good instead of this crap that only sells well because its labeled Final Fantasy.
Joystiq poll: Which of the Big 3 had the best E3 keynote? {Joystiq}
Jul 15th 2008 10:35PM I'd say the biggest announcement goes to MS for FF13 but the overall show goes to Sony because they gave me the most to look forward to with MAG, GOW3, RFOM2, KZ2 and LBP and that doesn't leave anything for Nintendo who looked like they were having fun playing their casual games but didn't really do anything to get me excited or address any issues of Wii storage or the successor or redesign of the DS. Don't get me wrong, Sony didn't by any means steal the show as this was the most dissapointing E3s in a very long time, I think Sony just did a little more to show us what we wanted to see. No argument the the 1 thing i'd take away overall still goes to MS but I don't think its as big a deal is everyone is making it out to be and things will settle down when the shock gets old, but its great for 360 owners while is a kick in the pants to the people that bought a PS3 just for SE RPGs.
Will Blu-ray audio discs take off, or flounder aimlessly à la DVD-A / SACD? {Engadget HD}
Jul 8th 2008 9:14AM For the most part I'd say Blu-Ray won't do well for audio discs but if they are smart about it, for example, they release all song by 1 artist on 1 disc as some sort of anthology, then there is a bit of potential but I'm sure such a disc would be expensive,
Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending June 29th, 2008 {Engadget HD}
Jul 8th 2008 9:11AM I think you people that are expecting big number from Blu-Ray just don't get it. New releases do well and back catalog releases of BIG movies do well. That's all any new format can expect to do vs DVD. I personally won't buy all discs going forward as Blu-Ray, just big movies like The Dark Knight, The Harry Potters and Indiana Jones. I will replace Lord Of The Rings, Gladiator, Armageddon and The Devil's Advocate, but when you add all tha up, its fails to compare to DVD. That doesn't mean Blu-Ray is doing bad, it is doing what should be expcected and I'd guess more people who still rent from Blockbuster, ect. wil rent the Blu-Ray version over the DVD if they can Blu-Ray players.
Wii Warm Up: How do you define a gaming fad? {Nintendo Wii Fanboy}
Jul 6th 2008 9:02AM I never thought I'd say this, but the best system right now is the DS.
I'm very dissapointed with the Wii and even now, if I play with it, its for old VC games from SNES and that's about it. When I have a guest that's never played with the Wii before, then they give it a run and the only thing they have fun with is Wii Sports.
The PS3 is looking to have potential but besides Metal Gear Solid 4, there's not much to brag about.
The 360 is a hardware disaster; I don't know a single person that hasn't had to have their system repaired and most of them multiple times. Even my brother who works at Best Buy bought a new model and ensured it was the newest model, 2 months ago and his is having problems now so don't give me the whole "the newer systems are ok" bs. I'd have to say that the 360 has a better library of games vs the other 2 but its still nothing special esp. when your system is in for repairs so you can't even enjoy the few good games on it.
The PSP is decent but the battery life is frustrating to deal with and some of the load times even with the newer model are insane.
The PC has the same issues it always will have with the exception of Blizzard adding some big must have titles that may force some people to upgrade.
Overall, this is a very dissapointing gen but there is potential. We'll have to see how it goes; if other companies set the bar at MGS4's quality, then we're in for a good time but I seriously doubt that will happen.
As to the main question, is the Wii an fad? I'd say no with the exception that, it seem that people are content with having the Wii as a second system or to replay retro games or to just use it as a sports simulator more than a console. Its like someone who buys a golf simulator and thats all it can do so they're happy with that and buy another system to play their other games.
