Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending December 23rd, 2007 {Engadget HD}

Jan 4th 2008 2:58PM I trust these numbers as much as a politician, and fans of either format should be the same. What are the statistical chances that 61:39 would fall 3 straight weeks, and during the holidays at that? The same chance of me hitting the lottery?

Nero 8 update brings Blu-ray authoring, mini HD DVD support {Engadget HD}

Dec 20th 2007 11:52AM Reading the description from the link, you only need a DVD-R burner. If it can do dual-layer, the better.

But most sounded like they were using it for something from a camcorder or a TV show. My interest are backing up my HD DVD movies like we can a standard DVD movie. Is there a program that cracks a HD DVD movie, then allows us to use this process to fit it on the Dual-Layer DVD-r?

Samsung's DB-UP5000 HD DVD / Blu-ray player: $799, shipping mid-to-late December {Engadget HD}

Dec 6th 2007 10:40AM Proof that a continued war is good for the consumer. Click the picture to the original article off this website, and see that it's $200 cheaper than they wanted because of "market activity". Thanks to the $98 deal, and $199 retails. Sony's CEO said that they would have to see adjustments of $100 this holiday season on standalone players to keep pace, probably sooner than he'd like to see. Thanks again to cut throat pricing on Toshiba stuff.

If you're not picking a side, this is good. You've got admission that the recent market activity cut this by $200, and Blu Ray standalones by $100. That is a POSITIVE!!! Paying more without the war is a NEGATIVE!!!

Also, look at the picture. A single slot to play both formats. Just as the HD DVD code was cracked early, and the BD supercode was cracked last month, having a player play both formats is just as easy. Be it one day soon from hackers, from the electronics makers as in the case of this Samsung, or one day when Blu Ray and HD DVD make a deal. This leads me to have no concerns moving forward that my HD DVD players will get a firmware upgrade one day to play Blu Ray, and my PS3 will get an update to play HD DVD. This player is already doing it with one slot.

And don't say it would take major hardware changes inside to make it happen. The Toshiba XA2 didn't come with (P)rogressive or Audio in Bitstream, but it happened via a firmware upgrade. The same type of long code could be written to make one of the upgradeable hardware units read the other companies disc format.

Don't move forward thinking the owners of media in one of the formats will be stuck, lose, or have a dieing movie because they are on the wrong side. Players moving forward will play both, and current players that have upgrade options will likely play both as well.

Onkyo DV-HD805 dissected, Toshiba HD-XA2 found inside {Engadget HD}

Nov 21st 2007 3:12PM Just got the XA2 from OneCall.com today for $479, matching Amazon's price. No taxes at OneCall, so that's why I asked them to match the Amazon price. Guy said they had a few left, these were going like hotcakes now that Toshiba did the last firmware upgrade to fix the audio, and let it do passthrough.

The Toshiba XA2 has the Reon processor, so that's why I like this player over the A series from this year.(A3,A30,A35)

Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending November 11th, 2007 {Engadget HD}

Nov 17th 2007 4:36PM With HH Gregg coming it at $149 on HD DVD players for Black Friday, and Blu Ray at $377, both units should see some major movement. I still say Wal-Mart lands with the best HD DVD price, my guess now is $129 since they waited to see what others offered it for. If select stores carrry stand alone Blu Ray units, I bet $349 is where Wal Marts lands.

Is FYE still the cheapest Black Friday joint for the movies? $16.95??

I guess you have to paste the link. I still say Wal-Mart tops this price.

Black Friday high-def player deals {Engadget HD}

Nov 16th 2007 2:53PM Wal-Mart gets to set back and look at the landscape in EVERY category by not releasing their Black Friday deals. This gives them a little more power to make late tweaks, but I'm sure they've hit the printers by now.?? It's only a guess, but I bet they offer HD DVD for $149 with Sears coming in at $179. Wal-Mart is notorious about wanting the BEST listed price.

I also expect them to be very hot on HD DVD and Blu Ray movie prices. With FYE at $16.98 on HD DVD titles, I bet Wal-Mart comes in around the $15 range on both formats.

They're movies on both formats that I've been holding off on with crazy retails, I'm hoping we see an adjustment starting Black Friday:-)

Nov 16th 2007 12:28PM FYE or Sears has HD DVD titles for $16.95 on Black Friday. I'm thinking it's FYE.
