DivX 7 to officially support MKV {Engadget HD}
Jul 1st 2008 12:33PM The PS3 is supposed to be the console "fully DiVX compliant", as was said by DiVX themselves.
So, in theory, yup, it would mean that MKV support is coming to PS3.
Kaleidescape's overpriced upscaling DVD players get reviewed {Engadget HD}
Jun 19th 2008 2:17PM Actually S&V the review pretty much confirms what we thought.
With $10k+ of equipment you might get closer to HD than with your normal upconverting DVD, but it has been found wanting and lacking compared with true HD sources, let alone a -very- good BluRay player (like a Marantz, Denon or Pioneer) whihc will still only net you about $2k, if that.
What is sad is that probably due to promotionnal purposes (Kaledidescape probably only let them see the system in adance if they were to offer a mostly positive review and no "unfair" comparisons), we see no shootout between the Kaleidecape, a Samsung DB1500 and a high end Denon or Pioneer player, comparing upsclaing in all three cases (with a very good DVD but also an average transfer one), but also upscaling Kaleidescape vs the best Blu Ray can show on the same movie (maybe with I Robot per example).
THAT would have been telling.
But in the end, and for more than $14k (full system), this is what it comes down to:
"The 1080p Player's upscaling magic was limited with old or poor transfers, but when working with pristine source material, the results approached true HD quality. Direct digital transfers of recent Pixar films or Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, had a depth and dimensionality that exceeded my expectations of what a DVD could look like. "
"Approached", and not "very close" or "almost equal", is imo a bit tame for $14k. Specially when said technology actually make old poor transfers (probably a majority in the DVD market) barely better at all due to the technology used in the upscaling (notice how they glimpse over that point very very fast).
Samsung BD-P1500 review {Engadget HD}
Jun 4th 2008 5:32PM Who cares (aside from a few who already have a player) about HD DVD now?
Just to specify, the pricing indicated is wrong :)
The 1500 is indeed $399 at BB, but Walmart has it at $349, and even gives you a $100 gift card between June 8th and June 14th on top of that, making it essentially a $249 player.
Awesome deal for people wanting to get into BR...
BDA granting 11 China-based manufacturers with Blu-ray licenses? {Engadget HD}
Jun 2nd 2008 5:35PM You have to laugh at the bitterness of the disapointed ex-HD DVD fanboys.
China was the last beacon of hope, or like TT said a few months aggo "You will see ! HD DVD will come back via CH DVD !!"
LMAO. Keep it up boys, now all you have is your bitterness and the hope that Blu Ray will fail.
The Samsung BD-P1500 unboxed {Engadget HD}
May 29th 2008 7:50PM Just to clarify, that is actually better than the BD30.
The BD 1500 can bitstream both THD and DTS MA (like the BD30), and can decode TrueHD (which the BD30 cannot).
It will also be upgradeable to profile 2.0 and can be patched through ethernet (BD30 cannot).
Notice that the BD30 is an excellent 1.1 player, but the 1500 is $349 (probably $249 during fall at Walmart) vs $499 for the BD30.
Transformers Blu-ray edition gets detailed, confirmed for September launch {Engadget HD}
May 29th 2008 6:31PM Uh, "Shape", you might want to know what you're talking about before posting that kind of nonsense.
PCM is the original soundMix -UNCOMPRESSED-
It therefore has a huge bitrate and takes a large amount of space on disc, but it is universally recognized by BR players and by recent receivers. This is the best you can get as far as sound format goes, but it takes, again, a lot of space. Not that it's a problem when you got 50Gb instead of 30 :)
Ask Engadget HD: Which gaming console suits HD junkies best? {Engadget HD}
May 28th 2008 8:10PM Nota: I re-cite MGS4 simply to specify that it seems it will be a BIG deal.
Nfinity also denotes some games "unannounced" for the Xbox, but possible in 2008.
There's also a few of those for the PS3:
Heavy Rain
War Devil
Naruto
Singstar vol2
among others
Oh, and hot from the press: The Video Store is coming to the PS3 for E3 (July 2008) :)
Ask Engadget HD: Which gaming console suits HD junkies best? {Engadget HD}
May 28th 2008 7:41PM Nfinity is still at it spouting his nonsense.
First, tons of your Xbox "coming soon" have already been pushed to 2009, like Alan Wake.
You make fun of Bioshock for PS3 (confirmed btw, with an official statement from TakeTwo - and with Exclusive new content), but you proudly list "Supreme Commander" as an exclusive for the 360 (lmao).
You also forget the comming of Crysis for PS3, with up to 50% new content compared to the PC version.
you say
* Resistance 2
* Haze (already out)
* Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
* LittleBigPlanet
* Wipeout HD
are coming out for sure. Newsflash, both SOCOM and Motostorm2 have been confirmed for fall (Sept-Oct) by Sony.
you also forgot those "little" titles (among others):
Metal Gear Solid 4 (Gamepro is calling this "the best game of the decade")
White Knight Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles
Crysis PS3
Bioshock PS3
Siren: Blood Curse
Tekken 5
The Agency
Buzz!
As per you declaring that the computing power of the PS3 is of no use in the GFX department, this is false.
Lazy programers will indeed not use this, but it is definitely possible to unload some of the work to the CPUs of the Cell instead of having the GPU do everything.
I think Uncharted proved that you can have awesome looking games, with no install, and little load times, on PS3.
You just need coders that are well trained on the PS3, and that's something you are going to find more and more.
Ask Engadget HD: Which gaming console suits HD junkies best? {Engadget HD}
May 28th 2008 12:13PM Well, I think even if we put the Blu Ray aside (main reason I picked it for), I would still probably pick a PS3, for its integrated WiFi and looks, which makes it hold its own next to my 50" TV in the living room :)
Other than that, the games I have tried (demos from the PSN) were very satisfactory, I bought DMC4 as a cheap pre-owned and the Gfx were excellent, so the HD experience satisfies, even beside Blu Ray :)
Waiting on WipEout HD for my next game, even if MGS4 looks more and more tempting as well.
Also, the mpeg4 files I watch and the mp3 I play all streamed from my PC make of this an amazing multimedia HD platform.
Now on the Blu Ray chapter, playback is excellent, even if I still lack a recent receiver to take advantage of the LPCM output.
Olevia-branded Blu-ray player on the way {Engadget HD}
May 20th 2008 5:13PM It's funny that the naysayers try to use this (which won't -obviously- be the price in the US) to try to show that Blu Ray has high prices and nothing changes.
A monthor two aggo, they might have had a shot ;)
Unfortunately for them, the BD1500 at $349 (profile 2.0 ready, bitstream THD and HDMA) and the Mag at $298 (profile 1.1, bitstreams THD and HDMA) are out :)
