Cavalier looking to compete in Hampton Roads, VA {Engadget HD}
Apr 3rd 2008 10:46AM Hmmm, I have had Cavalier phone service for like 5 years. 3 years ago I bought a new house and thought I would switch back to Verizon for my phone and DSL service, but was told I had to get a new number since I had a different CO or pay a $26.00 a month foreign CO fee. With Cavalier I kept the same number and have 10 Meg DSL service and phone with tall the bells and whistles for $67.00 a month including taxes and fees. The DSL is good; I generally get download speeds averaging 8meg. And my switching or staying has never had anything to do with my credit. And as I recall all those years ago when I switched from Verizon to Cavalier they checked my credit.
I inquired about their TV service shortly after it first came out and was told at that time HD was not currently available (but it would be), they had no DVR service (but would someday), and they can guarantee good TV service on 2 TVs any more than that would be questionable. So I stuck with DirecTV and am pretty happy there.

Toshiba's v2.0 firmware for third-gen HD DVD players causing jaggies? {Engadget HD}
Mar 14th 2008 8:58AM Hmm, one thing I noticed after putting on the latest firmware was I was watching Eastern Promises and the picture just did not look great to me, so I kept fussing and was like is it just me or is this just not great. I adjusted my TV. I adjusted settings on the HD DVD. I was like what changed all my other movies looked great on here. So I thought perhaps it was just the way the movie was. Then I tried one last thing and changed the resolution from 720p to 1080i and all of a sudden the picture was beautiful again. So not sure if it was just that movie, the latest firmware, or what. But I have always just set everything at 720p in the past and had no problem. I dont have either of these models though; I have a first generation unit.
Why Blu-ray will be the next DVD {Engadget HD}
Mar 3rd 2008 1:57PM Kind of a short sighted article if you ask me. First on the audio, when I bought my new TV it was the best picture for the best price type of deal which I think is what most people look for. I am seriously doubting there are 1000's of people in an audio video store walking around looking at TV's and saying to the salesman "WOW that gets a great picture, but are there HDMI hookups on it?" They use HDMI because they were available. As for sound system, again I bought the best audio system for the price and I bought it at the same time as my TV. HDMI input was just recently introduced in the market on audio systems. How about putting some common sense in your article and mentioning (or at least realizing) that HDMI has been a part of TV's for about 2 years longer than it has been for audio systems?
Now Blu-Ray did not go out of their way in any way shape or form to accommodate peoples current sound systems. Only HD DVD did that!!
As for the rest of your article it is merely YOUR opinion with no facts to back it up, so we'll leave you to it.
How to future proof your HD DVD collection {Engadget HD}
Feb 22nd 2008 9:41AM I have 9 hd dvd movies, 6 of which are combo discs. By the time they are no longer playable on my HD DVD player they will be on a clearance rack for 4.99 on Blu-Ray. Nothing to lose sleep over.
Ask Engadget HD: Which provider has the best quality HD? {Engadget HD}
Feb 21st 2008 3:21PM Hey all thanks for the response. My signal strength on the 103b sat is only in the 50 to 60 range, so I guess I need to call DirecTV and have it realigned. The tech people that come out are pretty lazy. I noticed they were low the last time he was here and was told that was normal and it was where it needs to be. Didn't seem right to me that I would lose my signal even during modest rain. It really has to be pouring out hard to lose the other sats.
Ask Engadget HD: Which provider has the best quality HD? {Engadget HD}
Feb 21st 2008 1:41PM Have the DirecTV people in here noticed that the HD channels from the new satellite seem to go out even if it is just a modest rain? I never lose the SD locals even in really hard rains. Not sure if that is the norm or if I need to have my Satellite repositioned. The last time the guy was here he told me my satellite was where it needed to be to.

My feeling is that the old saying is very true. Resolution is important but contrast and color are the most important things. And my Samsung gets a beautiful picture whatever the resolution. With the increased reolution for the most part you can maybe see a few more lines on someones face, or perhaps a brick building looks a little finer. And writing definately looks finer. But for 70% of the movie you would not know the difference. And as for cartoons, there is hardly any resolution to them to begin with. Always thought it was so stupid when the reviewers raved about the picture on recent Blu-Ray cartoon releases when the fact is it would be hard to not have beautiful pictures with animations. TV and video stores have been putting in cartoons for years to make people think the picture is better than it was. Have you ever walked by a rent to own place and they will have a lower quality TV they are selling at way too high of prices with a cartoon playing and you think, wow what an incredible picture?
