Microsoft's Ashley Highfield sees the end of TV as we know it {Engadget HD}

Sep 2nd 2009 11:56PM Yes, all of your OTA is free, but it's so covered in adverts, that it's impossible to watch. I remember the first time I visited the US in 2002, and couldn't believe the ad break every 6 minutes in a film on ABC. It just made it impossible to watch. I gave up about half way through.

What the hell has it got to do with democracy?? Is it undemocratic to have taxes?

I would much rather pay the £120/yr Licence Fee than have to put up with US style TV channels, with more adverts than programme, and everything appealing to the lowest common denominator. I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but I am surprised you put up with it!

Microsoft's Ashley Highfield sees the end of TV as we know it {Engadget HD}

Sep 2nd 2009 7:33AM As a UK resident, I don't like the line you finished the article with "anything could happen in a country that taxes TVs". I assume that you are referring to the TV Licence Fee, which pays for the BBC, the transmitter network and PSB on the other terrestrial channels.
£120 a year is not a lot of money for the quality of services the BBC offers. We get 7 national TV channels, all advert free, 12 national and countless regional radio stations, all advert free. The excellent BBC website, including the fantastic iPlayer, all advert free. On top of that the BBC have developed the vast majority of the technology used in broadcasting, if not entirely on their own, in co-operation with the Japanese broadcaster NHK.
To me £120/yr seems like an absolute bargain for all of that, and I can't imagine too many countries around the world who are not envious of the beeb.

Poll: What's better than the return of football to our HDTVs? {Engadget HD}

Aug 16th 2009 6:02AM Yes! The football is back, thank god!

That said, football is a game played with the FEET, and not the hands with far too much padding.
Come on Yanks, join the rest of the world in calling football football.

RED blows away small room of videophiles with 4k RED RAY footage at half the bitrate of MiniDV {Engadget HD}

Apr 28th 2009 10:07AM SD DV is 25Mb/s.
It's an uncompressed format, and NOT what is on a DVD.
That is MPEG2, which are you rightly say tops out at around 10Mb/s

Sin City Blu-ray garners a perfect review {Engadget HD}

Apr 28th 2009 9:54AM Brilliant! Been waiting for this one. A fantastic film, and very well shot too.
Hopefully the UK release won't be too far behind.

Virgin Media launches 50Mbps internet service in UK {Engadget HD}

Dec 16th 2008 5:50AM It may say "50Mb/s", but if you use that for more than a couple of minutes they cap your speed. I am on their 10Mb/s service. If I download over a gigabyte a day they reduce the speed by SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT! Making my "10Mb/s" service a 2.5Mb/s. They say they won't throttle the 50Mb/s until it goes nationwide next year, but at 50Mb/s it's only going to take a matter of minutes before the unbelievable cap comes in. Better of going with a DSL provider like Sky, who offer a lower top speed, but maintain it 24/7.
As soon as my 12 month min term with Virgin is up, I'm off, never to return!

Top 10 films that should be released on Blu-ray -- do you agree? {Engadget HD}

Oct 28th 2008 1:36PM YES! Pulp Fiction please! The DVD I've got is the worst transfer of a film I've ever seen, come on, give us it on Blu.

Fight Club would be good too.

British regulators move to quiet obnoxiously loud commercials {Engadget HD}

May 13th 2008 4:46PM Thank god!
Paramount Comedy Channel is terrible for this,
Good thing is, this might actually happen. The TV regulators in this country do seem to have teeth. Thats why normal commercial TV is watchable in the UK unlike the US. Ad breaks every 6 minutes is horrible, it'd drive me mad!

Blu-ray releases on April 1st, 2008 {Engadget HD}

Mar 31st 2008 2:14PM They mentioned this releases are in AVC, I wish studios would use VC-1 a bit more, I just think it looks better.

Sky One ponies up the cash for HD drama {Engadget HD}

Mar 21st 2008 6:28AM "We Americans may think it's cute or quaint to read about "progammes" and "colours," "

I do hate to have to point this out, but the language is ENGLISH, and unsurprisingly the ENGLISH know how to use it! That is how you spell those words, not how you Yanks spell it.
But yes I agree with the above poster, do you always have to start pointing out differences, and just get on with the news.
