NBC's Jay Leno claims Blu-ray is "above HD" {Engadget HD}
Jul 25th 2007 7:01AM ... Because they've pledged support for BD exclusively. They have released some movies early on (like X-men 3), but soon thereafter, AACS was cracked and movies started getting posted online, so they held back for BD+. Now that BD+ was finalized a short while ago, Fox has announced new movie releases soon (I think by year end). I believe they are also helping in the promotional programs for the BDA.
Toshiba not so impressed by Blu-ray's victory cries {Engadget}
Mar 19th 2007 3:15PM Free movie vouchers with the PS3? What free movie vouchers? I only got $10 coupons! I only used one too! What about the 9 free HD DVDs you get when you buy an HD DVD player? (4-5 from Toshiba, and 4-5 through the store - I think its Best Buy)
HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on March 13th, 2007 {Engadget HD}
Mar 12th 2007 3:10PM So ... Sony's not releasing any of their movies to HD-DVD ... how would a 6 month delay help? Wouldn't this be even more of a reason to jump ship and buy a BD player?
Where are the official HD DVD vs Blu-ray sales numbers? {Engadget HD}
Jan 19th 2007 4:50PM I don't really see this comment come up...Sony is producing a ton of PS3s ... This is going to have one major impact on the industry even if nobody buys movies: they will drive down the costs of Blu-ray player production. This will enable the price of standalone players to drop in price FAR more rapidly than HD-DVD. Everyone here has probably heard of economies of scale. In fact, we might even see standalone players below $500 in the next 12-18 months. Sure, HD-DVD players are there now ... but with falling prices (I think Sony's players already came down $100), PS3 adoption worldwide (boost coming from actual game launches and Europe), tepid HD-DVD addon sales for the 360 (I say tepid because they don't look to be accelerating), and movie support ... at the end of the year, the price premium over HD-DVD won't be that bad. Plus, since all PS3 games and Blu-Ray movies are made in the same kind of production lines, we should see cost synergies there in the same manner. I think the format has potential despite it's early high-costs. If anything, the requirement of the BD-ROM in the PS3 will provide the impetus needed to bring a superior product to market in an accelerated manner than would have otherwise been possible given the cheaper, less revolutionary alternative.
TDK's Durabis 2 coating protects 200GB Blu-ray discs {Engadget}
Jan 19th 2007 9:31AM Have you ever used a Blu-ray disk? All blu-ray disks use TDK's Durabis technology. I haven't taken steel wool to a disk, but I've done minor tests with disks and they look brand new after I clean them up.
Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD: It's all subjective {Joystiq Playstation}
Jan 1st 2007 1:12PM I just have to chime in here ... since it's an LCD and the highest resolution supported is 1080i, that means it's downscaling everything to 720p. The author must think it's better to push a 1080i signal to it than a 720p signal and in my opinion, has lost all credibility. I mean come on, if he's not even testing at native 1080p, you won't see nearly all the detail you should. Granted, not many people have 1080p sets, but let me tell you, when properly calibrated, my PS3 blu-ray disks (thanks netflix) look amazing on my Sony Bravia 46" XBR3 @ 1080p.
Check out http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/ for reviews on individual movie releases. They also identify that HD-DVD is brighter, but in most recent cases, the video (despite different codecs in some cases) are identical. We're dealing with digital data here ... one format won't look different if the data is compressed with the same characteristics (bit-rates, etc.).
Wii FAQ: answers to your Wii questions {Engadget}
Nov 19th 2006 9:24PM So where's the "is there lag in the remote?" question? I am returning my Wii first thing tomorrow morning (I preordered) because the control is absolutely horrible. The only good thing was Wii Sports - Tennis. Zelda was ok and didn't even look all that bad ... but the controls annoyed me playing as a Wolf. I spent an hour trying to jump a gap ... You have to aim your jump just right and it pissed me off to no end. Red Steel, as the reviews have stated, is a piece of crap, and I'm offended I actually purchased it. The remote sometimes drifts, so my character keeps turning when I've recentered the image to the screen. Also, it's nearly impossible to have a good shot because of the mechanics. This is no better way to play a first person shooter than using the regular controllers.
I was a believer ... Real disappointed. I can't wait for the real reviews to get in when the novelty wears off. The buttons are fine, so it's not bluetooth that's the problem ... It's totally the sensor bar's delay. I can't wait to see the Nintendo World's staff when I demand my money back for such a pile of sh*t. Going back to the PC.
I do apologize for the tone of this post. You don't have any idea how pissed I am at the Wii.
Xbox 360 adds 1080p, HD DVD drive is $170 US for November 22nd in Japan {Engadget}
Sep 20th 2006 12:14AM Yes they do. Check wikipedia for details. Component can handle 1080p at 60 fps (have to specify because someone is bound to disagree) and so can VGA. Looking forward to a PS3 on my 46" Sony Bravia XBR3 in full HD! w00t
Xbox 360 adds 1080p, HD DVD drive is $170 US for November 22nd in Japan {Engadget}
Sep 20th 2006 12:11AM Maybe 120 megapixels per second?
So, 1080p on the 360 is pretty useless unless a game is designed for 1080p. Yippee, no surprise there. Considering the original intent was not to run games at 1080p, I'm not sure we'll see any 1080p games in the near future until developers improve their optimization skills. At least the PS3 was designed with 1080p in mind. Kind of sad that MS is essentially admitting that they were wrong about "1080p not this generation." This is, of course, assuming the claims in this article are substantiated.
