Ask Engadget HD: What's the ultimate HD movie HTPC setup? {Engadget HD}

Jan 16th 2008 3:26PM I built my own and it worked out great! :) I feel if you can afford it and have the time to build it yourself or the money to buy one premade it is the best way to go. I figure you get a motherboard GPU and processor in every HD player you buy or game console, why not do it all on one? A lot of games are ported or (like Crysis) PC exclusive or when they go PC they are better like Gears of War and offer modability and addon functionality. Games are more friendly to customization and have been for some time these days. It's a fun experience and much more fault tolerant. It's easier to replace one bad card than my whole player and cheaper too you know? You can upgrade easier too. I wouldn't have it any other way and most of my HD source is from my HTPC. To give an idea if you build smart and do it yourself I saved about $1000 building mine and timing my purchases correctly. There's no saying you cant still get the game consoles and plug them into your TV as well for those exclusive games you really like and if you have dual displays soft modding the XBOX to store like an Apple TV to run your TV instead and installing a bigger hard drive in it is great too. This way one can free up system resources for other functions or the intensive games and watch a movie at the same time or background noise. Sorry about the run-on but it's pretty exciting of a concept.

Retail CEO's react to Warner's Blu-ray shift {Engadget HD}

Jan 9th 2008 3:24PM Yeah Best Buy would be the one to watch.

Deeznuts are you are Star Wars fan? I think your name is a cheat code for one of their old games...

Vidikron (FU) I see your avatar how do you feel about BSG S1 being on HD-DVD? It's one of the reasons I own the addon drive ported through my PC because of things like Battlestar but it makes me wonder at what point will all box sets come out because they must lose money on sets they make if either end up on a losing format.

Eyes-on with Samsung's 31-inch and 14-inch OLED TVs -- take that Sony {Engadget HD}

Jan 9th 2008 3:17PM From stories I've heard the customer service is better with Samsung but I'm pretty close in touch and friends with people of both companies so I haven't had any personal complaints ever.

It's been long true that in a lot of cases wired is better than wireless and each has a sacrifice. Given the choice for WiFi or Ethernet for your desktop computer assuming each were both quite easy to do wouldn't you pick wired?

Michael Bay says HD DVD will die a slow death {Engadget HD}

Jan 5th 2008 9:10PM How many times has Bay now changed sides?

SAMe I agree I want LOTR in HD that was a great special effects film and storyline but in HD is icing on the cake. Lots of nature and chivalry and we all know showing off technology or nature are the most gorgeous ways to show off an HD display with those bright and plentiful colors to attract.

omoks you are right I get about 2/3 of my HD content that way. I've never been one for optical storage and prefer my 2.5 TB of storage instead.

Return your HDTV? Or buy more stuff to go with it? {Engadget HD}

Dec 27th 2007 3:06AM That's sure true and the worse the reputation of the company, the lower the bad consumers sink. I'd at least try to work at the better ones but no matter what there are some real nut jobs, after all they shop too.
