iPhone pricing and Rogers Wireless {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jul 13th 2007 4:11PM Rogers is simply desperate. They have spent a lot of money on building the Rogers empire and the only thing that really rolls in the dough is the Wireless arm.
The rest is either breaking even or running a slight loss, not a good recipe to pay off all the debt Ted Rogers has accumulated over building his empire.
The reality is that Canadian prices suck. I am with Fido for the last 7 1/2 years (ever since I came to Canada) and the reality is that ever since Rogers bought them the service has gone down and the price has gone up. There is now really no big difference anymore between Rogers and Fido. A shame.
Neither Telus nor Bell are offering anything comparable and so we keep on paying through the nose for services that are almost free in other countries.
There IS a movement now trying to change things but it'll be a while, maybe Rogers needs to be broken up again (lose Fido) to re-instate some competition in the market. As it is Rogers and the rest have no incentive to change a thing.
BD+ DRM is now available for Blu-ray {Engadget HD}
Jun 20th 2007 1:11PM 3.... 2..... 1..... Expecting YouTube videos of people who can't play their freshly bought BD discs because their player isn't BD+ certified.
I am also expecting people to hunt for firmware updates with no idea on how to get them on their players because there is no ethernet jack on their BD player.
Blockbuster chooses Blu-ray: is the war over? {Engadget HD}
Jun 20th 2007 1:09PM This is funny, Toshiba is killing HD DVD by putting out cheap players? What kind of weird fanboi logic is this?
@The Blotch,
as far as "I hate Microsoft so HD DVD has to die" is fanboism at it's best. HD DVD is the way more customer friendly format over BD and at least Microsoft hasn't installed spyware on your computer because you had the audacity to actually pay them money for one of their products unlike Sony.
You're a bit like Cory Doctorow who hates Apple because they use their own formats in certain places and lambasts them for restricting his freedoms, while at the same time he gets off on anything Disney, despite the fact that they were and are instrumental in things like the DMCA and the extension on copy right.
Get your head out of your ass and stop hating.
HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on April 3rd, 2007 {Engadget HD}
Apr 3rd 2007 2:02PM Maybe HD DVD would sell more if they actually HAD something to sell to me.
Children of Men? I can't find it anywhere. HMV & Futureshop both have them "on order" to arrive "whenever".
Amazon.ca lists Children of Men as 4 - 6 weeks out(!).
What about The Good Shepherd? A movie I REALLY want to see as I missed it at the theater? Well buddy, same thing for Futureshop and HMV when it comes to buying it there: sometime in the indetermined future.
Amazon.ca is even better, they don't list it AT ALL.
WTF? I mean seriously, they WANT to sell units? Then maybe they should get them into the stores?
NBC Universal getting in the HD distribution biz {Engadget HD}
Mar 19th 2007 8:13PM Some of the TS streams I have seen on the net look fine to me and on my 46" Sharp, so I guess the problem lies with your cable provider.
Still, I may just pick up the HD DVD version of Galactica when it comes out (and heck, if they manage to actually release Season 2 & 3 too I won't cry.
Say what? iPhone available for purchase at Amazon Germany? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jan 12th 2007 2:48PM It's a pre-order, but the interesting thing is that the phone will be sold by Amazon, not a third party.
This may fuel the speculation that the phone will be available unlocked and without a contract outside of the US.
How the iPhone might be sold unlocked {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jan 11th 2007 3:43PM EDGE is pretty wide spread, the visual voicemail though will most likely need a piece of Software on the Carriers Backend.
Which is the thing I don't get really. The VM backend most likely was written by Apple, they could have just sold it as a "black box" to any carrier and sell the phone directly themselves, why did they chose to tie themselves to one carrier only (at least in the US?).
iTunes: From 0 to 7.0 {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Sep 15th 2006 1:03AM iTunes 7 clearly is a nice step forward, too bad the audio playback is buggy :( Audio output suddenly drops and I have clipping on clear songs when / if iTunes plays for any extended period of time in the background, have to stop and restart the playback to "fix" this.
Will Stargate SG-1 live on? {TV Squad}
Aug 24th 2006 5:08PM There is a thought: If MGM really likes the show and makes money with it they could go with other partners outside of the US (e.g. Canada), push it out globally on iTunes and concentrate on DVD sales.
The fan base may be strong enough for this, not to forget that iTunes could use some content for International distribution. Now there would be an opening.
I wonder if they take it? Alternativly they could bring it straight into syndication and bypass the original airing right away, and in turn put out DVD sets right away.
People's watching habits have started to change over the last five years and the market may just be ready to support an approach like this.
Charles Wiltgen responds to Cory Doctorow's 'DRM is bad for business' {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Aug 6th 2006 2:03PM Doctorow lost his way. He's barking at Apple for implementing a (mild) DRM System that is in a way required by law.
Meanwhile, he fawns over everything Disney which is clearly the bigger evil:
- They pushed for an extension on Copyright.
- They pushed part of the DMCA
Yet, he has no problem singing the praise of the Mouse Empire everytime they do something.
I think his real motivation is something completely different: He is pissed at Apple that they have become successful and are now more mainstream, he's not the only cool one with a Powerbook anymore at one of his conference. Poor Cory.
