Engadget HD Podcast 082 - 04.23.2008 {Engadget HD}

Apr 24th 2008 9:00AM I didn't realize you guys were such Netflix fanboys. I guess I was too until "Cinderella Man" sat at number 1 in my Netflix queue for 4 weeks when it was released back in 2005/2006. I applaud your loyalty (considering Netflix came up with the concept), but I have never regretted the switch to Blockbuster. In-store Blu-ray exchanges, no HD premiums, HD-DVD rentals, quicker turn around, consistent new release shipments (the day before you can pickup in the store) make Blockbuster better in my opinion. The Netflix streaming is the only advantage I see (if you value SD content). If Netflix offers free HD downloads to the Xbox360, I might consider switching back. If you have a Blockbuster store close to home, but it's hard to argue Blockbuster takes a great service and makes it better.

Apr 21st 2008 3:21PM Ben, I too am glad you are covering Media Center (although I have now moved away from it with the Dish HD-DVR). Maybe Dish will offer a PC HD tuner in the future and I can go back (in HD this time). I have started reading your personal blog to keep abreast of your progress

I wanted to provide an update on the Dish Network HD-only install. The technician showed up for the first appointment without the HD-DVR (VIP722). I guess all the providers have the same issues. Another technician showed up for the second appointment with a brand new VIP722. A new dish and 2 hours later I was up and running. Quality was one of my concerns about making the switch, but I am pleased. Picture/sound quality are great.

Engadget HD Podcast 078 - 03.26.2008 {Engadget HD}

Mar 31st 2008 6:21PM Just to clarify ... I listen to the podcast a couple times because I'm listening at work. My focus changes depending on what I'm working on at the moment and I miss things here and there. Sorry to burst your bubble, but you don't have my undivided attention. ;)

I mentioned Netflix VS Blockbuster because in podcast 076 Ben was raving about getting "No Country for Old Men" on Blu-ray from Netflix on the day of release. I used to get new HD-DVD releases on the day of release from Blockbuster on a regular basis. I haven't gone Blu-ray yet (hoping for a Xbox360 Blu-ray add-on), so I can't comment on the delivery of Blu-ray new releases from Blockbuster. I did notice we have a couple local Blockbuster stores starting to carry Blu-ray, so now you can get free Blu-ray exchanges in the store

Concerning your comments about the 360 being noisy, I believe the 360's are getting progressively quieter as they make changes to address the temperature issues. I usually play movies in the external HD-DVD player and I usually don't notice any fan noise.

Since I cant buy an HD cable card tuner for my media center PC, I have decided to give Charter the boot and try the DishHD-only package w/ HD-DVR. I was surprised to see that AT&T has partnered with Dish Network, so I was able to bundle AT&T wireless/AT&T DSL and Dish Network ($5 discount for each additional service). The Dish Network rep said they have a new free movie download service that lets you download movies to the DVR. Ill believe it when I see it.

Mar 24th 2008 3:08PM No love for Xbox360 owners/Blockbuster Online subscribers?

After Ben's comment "I just didn't want to cut anyone out", I was disappointed there was not even a mention. I thought subjects such as 360 as a media hub, cost of Xbox Live content, where to find downloadable HD content and Netflix new releases compared to Blockbuster would spur at least one discussion.

BTW ... I have been downloading WMV-HD trailers from IGN to watch with my 360/XP Media Center desktop. Where can I find more downloadable WMV-HD content?

Length is fine. The longer the better. I usually listen to the podcast a couple times anyway, since my focus changes depending on what I am working on at the moment and I miss things on the first listen.
