Jun 22nd 2009 2:17PM I own a blu-ray player and most of my friends have jumped on board. One criteria has been prevalent in all of our purchases and that is the players ability to up convert SD DVD's. We seldom buy blu-ray movies because of the very poor return on investment. Last night I watched the blu-ray version of "Fantastic Four Return of the Silver Surfer". While the SQ was quite nice, the PQ was at best slightly better than the SD version. Plus, for a movie that has been out for quite some time now the $25 price tag is still way too far above SD prices ($14.99 at release date). If it's not an action adventure movie with lots of big sound then most of the folks I know will buy the SD version. It's not a matter of blu-ray hating, just bang for the buck loving.
Poll: How much would you pay to make a copy of a Blu-ray Disc? {Engadget HD}
Jun 20th 2009 2:09PM I don't understand how any ripping software like AnyDVD, that was designed to burn SD to your computers hard drive, can somehow be upgraded to burn blu-ray to your hard drive. To copy the blu-ray would you not need to install a burner capable of transferring the blu-ray from your hard drive to a (more expensive) blu-ray disc. When you factor in all the new costs 'm not sure it's worth it.

Jun 19th 2009 12:48PM I agree with all above. Lots and lots of HDTV owners out there have not entered the world of blu-ray for any number of reasons. The two most often mentioned is the cost of players and the cost of movies (available from Netflix). This player is only a good deal if the PQ is rated at least good by BLU-RAY standards. I would guess that it's up converting abilities are marginal so unless reviews show otherwise it should only be counted on for actual blu-ray watching, unless you are replacing a current non up converting player. I still want to see a couple of professional reviews regarding PQ before I blanket recommend any player, especially one for under $100. I would rather see people remain blu-rayless than to be disappointed with their first blu-ray experience.

Jun 19th 2009 11:17AM The only thing of concern is PQ. If it's good then I say go for it.

Jun 6th 2009 2:45AM Current bulb life should scare potential buyers off. Not only short life but expensive. 100,000 hours and a nice price plus better performance in brighter lighting could spell a whole new world for projectors.
