Toshiba lights up massive LED HDTV in Times Square {Engadget HD}

Jul 15th 2008 11:29PM Maybe they will be using it to "super upscale" commercials.

Very nice to have available, though I still plan to see most of movies on bluray.

Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending July 7th, 2008 {Engadget HD}

Jul 13th 2008 11:31PM I don't believe that 400.00 is a "fortune" to pay for a blu-ray player (some are now $299), except in the economy we are living right now. I believe any person who has spent hard earned money on a high-def television would love to have a player and movies that make their great new tv look the best that it can. But because of the economy, where a consumer has to decide between spending 400.00 for a blu-ray player or for 7 tanks of gas, it will take longer for blu-ray to take hold. But it will take hold. Our country has gone through many hard times and has emerged in good shape and it will happen again. I certainly don't believe downloads will take over in that time by any means. People love physical media and they are used to it.

I really would like to know where the safety is is storing up 100 movies on a hard drive is? ALL hard drives eventually fail, they can fail within a month, a year after you buy or fill them. Then where are your 100 movies? I know for certain, unless I have a fire, that my movies are on the shelf and safe and ready for play at any time, with all of the extras and the 1080p picture and the lossless soundtracks. Now where are those features in the downloads?

I love these propaganda-propelled posters (we know who they are) who have their death wish for blu-ray. These are the exact same people that are saying downloads are the future. They are also the exact same people that said exactly 7 months ago that hd-dvd was the next generation high def format and it's success would be astounding. Take a look at their previous posts from that time period, it's a riot. Of course one of them has decided to make their former posts "private.Gee, I wonder why.

Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending July 7th, 2008 {Engadget HD}

Jul 13th 2008 7:34PM No matter what alternatives are rolled our Truthteller, the conomy stinks and is in terrible shape. Not even DVD is doing well, or anything else. Food prices are sky-rocketing as are gas prices and fuel, and everything else that goes along with it. Timing for blu ray or ANY product right now is awful.

Our nation's economy always makes a recovery. But first we need new leadership who actually care about our country. I don't expect ANY product to be an outstanding seller until this turns around, blu-ray is just one of those products. That doesn't mean 9.95 or 19.95 downloads are doing any better either, or regular dvd. I think many people are watching television and the collections they already own until we see some relief with the bad economy, nothing will change. Hopefully by the holidays things might lighten up a bit?.

DISH to roll out 17 new HD channels on August 1st {Engadget HD}

Jul 12th 2008 7:24PM Nick, for a long time Dish was the leader in HD. DirecTV only had the lead for the last half of last year into the first quarter oif this year. What makes you think they will remain the leader? Surely DISH will have much to promote this holiday season too. I would say they will be, by the holiday season, very much equal. As of now Dish has many more HD local markets going on, but I am sure that will change now with Direct's new sat. But don't forget Dishg has a new one up soon too :-)

DISH to roll out 17 new HD channels on August 1st {Engadget HD}

Jul 11th 2008 2:05PM No this has nothing to do with Echo 11 being operational. There's no way they could add channels as soon as August 1. But I do think locals in HD are going to be added for every territory and Dish will have the same amount of high def as Direct, and Dish's dvr is miles ahead. I am not one of those who thinks one is better than the other, I started with Dish and am a very happy customer and I appreciate how fast they are adding channels.

DISH Network details HD only TurboHD packages {Engadget HD}

Jul 11th 2008 12:01AM Well, I AM impressed. they promised more channels and they are delivering. They did take away Voom but are making up for it now. My favorite Voom channels were the movie channels, well August 1st we get 6 new HBO HD channels, 4 new Starz HD channels, another Cinemax HD, and a few others. For a movie fan like myself I couldn't be happier, these channels run alot of movies in HD that aren't on other channels, especially the STARZ...plus they have been adding HD locals much faster than Directv, by year's end they say all markets will be covered.

Glad I remained with Dish. -)

Jul 10th 2008 11:54PM This is great news for a movie fan like me! I have seen the schedules of those channels, many of which are broadcasting alot of movies in HD that aren't on other channels. Nice job DISH:-)

Ask Engadget HD: Which AV receiver has the best upscaling chip? {Engadget HD}

Jul 10th 2008 12:48AM Stulaloid: I agree with you on the sound of the 3808. I started out with the Yamaha rx-v1800. First thing I learned AFTER purchase was that Yamaha clips the HDMI signal so it does not pass blacker-than-black or whiter-than white (16-235 instead of the full 0-255 RGB signal). Then it had the famous "dts MA pop" where some discs played in DTS Master Audio gave a pop that could damage speakers. That was fixed with a firmware update. Finally, after 2 months, all 4 of the HDMI ports stopped working (there was sound but no video on any of them) and I sent it in to be repaired and they had to replace the entire HDMI circuitry. I am now selling the 1800 and am very happy with the Denon 3808ci. I love it. I do not upscale anything as my other machines do that.

I am not saying anything bad about all Yamaha receivers, I am just very happy I decided to switch to the Denon and am loving it. The sound seems much richer to me.

Ask Engadget HD: Which AV receiver has the best upscaling chip? {Engadget HD}

Jul 9th 2008 12:35PM Interesting, when I turn my 3808 on only a second later I press which input I want and it switches, maybe there is something wrong with your unit? I find it very fast at that. I love my 3808, I don't need upscaling because I have that in my Denon 3930 dvd player (Realta HQV). I don't use video tape of upscale anything else.
