Samsung's LN65B650 LCD takes a 65-inch bite out of CEDIA, no LEDs harmed {Engadget HD}

Sep 10th 2009 9:08AM The Samsung has a comparable size of the the 67" DLP LED, an excellent set BTW, to replace it, but their pricing is off, IMO. The Sony 65" (so far) is priced a thousand dollars LESS than this Samsung (you'd think it would be the reverse) and I don't see any difference in features. As for plasma, the Panasonic 65" I could (at least a few days ago) pick up for a price just above HALF the price of this 65" Samsung LCD.
Good luck, Samsung, with your pricing, your sets are great, the pricing on this size...isn't.

Poll: Are you replacing your DVDs with Blu-ray Discs? {Engadget HD}

May 31st 2008 3:17PM I replace only the DVDs I can sell, or those that highdefdigest recommends as a good "upgrade" or a similar reference source.
As for DVDs, I don't buy them anymore, just Blu-ray Discs, but I buy fewer BDs because even with sales, coupons and the like, these are more expensive to DVDs:
3 DVDs at $19.99 (a typical off-sale price) equals 2 BDs at $29.99, unless the store wants to gouge me at $34.99, which I refuse to buy, unless I got a Best Buy $5 reward certificate and really, really, want it.
New movies we never got to see are primarily the BDs I get to buy (with permission from the spouse), provided these are what my family (or even it if it's just me) wants to watch and we missed these at the theatres.

Poll: Do you still watch SD programming? {Engadget HD}

May 17th 2008 2:48PM I watch only the HD channels, few that there are because I can.
My carrier offers only 13 national channels plus all the network HD locals, but outside of watching the very bad analogue Sci-Fi Channel which is NOT available in HD on the TWC system, I ignore the rest.
Everytime a new HD channel is added, like once a year, I give the HD channel a chance, but always ignored its analogue version deliberately.

Sony BRAVIA XBR 2008 roadmap leaked {Engadget HD}

Apr 14th 2008 8:18PM Wow, Sony, from 60" and 70" more affordable SXRDs, you go up to 52" and think you have got it made in the marketplace...but no.
Even though there is a 55" Bravia LCD panel lurking out there, it will probably be double or more what many paid for the SXRD and you will call it "progress", but for who?
The 70" LCD set, in your current "marketing model" costs as much as a good automobile, around $33,000, hardly worth it except for the very wealthy...what do you have for the average consumer who sits at the distance of a 60" or 65" inch set (or 70", like you had with the SXRD or "Qualia")?
Nothing.
My next set will be a Panasonic 65" Plasma or Sharp Aquos 65" LCD set, still more pricey, but for THEIR prices against your 70" set, I could buy at least THREE of them.
Your AVRs are very good, your Blu-ray is excellent and the cameras and computers are fine, too...but your HDTVs are missing sizes and affordable pricing after 52"...bad for you, SONY!

Sony replaces top TV executive, attempts to boost profits {Engadget HD}

Mar 31st 2008 8:19PM Trinitron was amazing for its time with analogue service only, then 768p LCD RPTVs came on board with SXRD later to replace these as the "Trinitron of the 21st Century", yeah Sony, what happened? What was it...3 years to nothing?
Now all you get from Sony are 52" Bravia LCD panels, but the 60" and 70" size HDTVs are completely missing, nothing to replace them...what a stupid "marketing model", IMO.
Does Sony really think 52" sizes are going to "do it" for them, honestly? I don't believe it.

Poll: What medium delivers your HDTV programming? {Engadget HD}

Mar 9th 2008 12:18PM I put down satellite because I am doing that once Navigator hits my 8300HD boxes from TWC:
In addition to that, our TWC system in SE Wisconsin offers only 13 national HD channels outside of locals vs. DirecTVHD's over 5 DOZEN I will enjoy watching - very bad on TWC-Milwaukee's part.
FIOS is not available here, U-Verse in only very limited areas (banned in Kenosha County altogether) and so satellite services are the only way to really go for "more HD".

Hallmark Movie Channel HD headed to Time Warner Cable {Engadget HD}

Feb 23rd 2008 8:28AM Oh great, just one more HD channel TWC Wisconsin will never get!
Personally speaking, I'll happier once TWC corporate gets the USAHD and SciFiHD channels.
But it will be even better - for other TWC locations:
Those also won't be available in TWC Wisconsin, ever.

Video is more important than audio {Engadget HD}

Feb 10th 2008 6:33PM Many of my installs come by from the fact they are entertained by my setups I show them first by both video and audio surround.
Then they DO select at least a 5.1 setup they can afford and probably expand to 7.1.
Listening IS believing and most big-box stores have room for only a large batch of hanging flat panels in bad lighting and even worse setups, so audio is, of course, ignored.
If ever the networks start at least offering Dolby Digital Plus, a codec designed with broadcast/cable/satellite in mind with its compression rates, maybe more emphasis on audio will take place.
Another thing for the manufacturers to consider is building the panel sets to offer side speakers and include a bottom center (or an all-bottom three speaker placement for space savings) to get at least the audio there with at least halfway decent speakers; then offer outputs for a sub and 2 or four back surrounds to be hooked up as an option with amplifier concealed close by.

Time Warner Cable adding more HD in Central Texas {Engadget HD}

Jan 22nd 2008 8:18PM U-Verse coming to your TWC area or town does not necessarily mean TWC locally will add a bunch of HD channels like it is assummed-wrong!
TWC Wisconsin-Milwaukee has 13 HD national channels plus the HD locals, that's all:
U-Verse has been here - and - expanding its "Universe" for over a year now here and TWC could care less about adding the HD channels Texas, the Carolinas and NY are enjoying, today.
Don't assume that U-Verse will make the difference to TWC adding more HD channel additions...no way!

Time Warner Cable adds trio of new HD channels in Raleigh area {Engadget HD}

Dec 27th 2007 10:47AM You folks have more HD channels than we do in TWC Wisconsin and other TWC areas, too: Congradulations!
