What if you add a new HD monitor to Windows Vista? {Engadget HD}
Oct 6th 2005 11:54AM I just bought a 26" Insignia LCDHDTV at BestBuy to use with my Media Center PC. I haven't seen a good working version of Media Center for Vista yet including the PDC build that reviewed on a few online sites. I expect this later in the year and can wait. I can speak to Windows MCE latest version, I have a machine with two tuners in it, a hauppage WinTV and an ATI HDTV Wonder Tuner in it (an over the air HD tuner). Since the release of XP I have always had to register my product with them through activation and I see other manufacturers joining this kinda thing, with or without Microsoft. I buy everything and follow the rules so things in the future like PMP and HD DVD managed copy doesn't bother me. I do really hope it doesn't get to the day where I can't use my PVR though or have to pay for that functionality. I do think the move to DRM is a little fast and furious and I wonder if Microsoft has thought of any places where they think a computer shouldn't be necessary to be. Why should other forms of digital media be different than VCR tapes, CD sized Cassettes, and DVDs. Are these companies SO revenue oriented and rushing to protect the content? Will there be a backlash? I think the idea of over protecting content is silly, do we have to pay for as consumers someone else's illegal activities? It seems like it. The thing about all of this is that it further divides the commercial community and the open source community because I fear the backlash of all of this DRM is that there will be computer OS'es (not from Microsoft) that makes it easy to have a totally open OS that does all of this stuff as a pirate OS because these companies have went too far with DRM.. Then it will totally be a war. I don't believe that people aren't reasonable with their usage of things, and I think it's possible to go too far.. However we aren't there yet. I am hoping the open source community doesn't do something further to push this over the edge..
