CBS News fleshes out high-def plans {Engadget HD}
Jul 14th 2008 2:23AM "By default, I always go for an HD broadcast, regardless of what is on."
Too bad that this isnt the norm. As has been noted over and over, HD has not been shown to be a winner in news ratings anywhere - and CBS needs all the help it can get in that area.
NBC was the #1 Nightly News Program when it went to HD and quickly became #2 to ABC. Not that HD caused the decline, but again, as has been proven, there is no influx of ratings due to HD.
DISH Network's EchoStar XI lifts off on July 15th {Engadget HD}
Jul 10th 2008 2:20PM Given the collection of failing space junk that Dish now owns in orbit, which piece of junk is this bird replacing? As it is being launched with the telemetry shown in the post, clearly they must have made some decision where it is planning to end up.

Jun 25th 2008 1:57AM 200% Color Gamut - Hype, unless you don't want to conform to REC 709.
The key thing that people better realize is that the colormeters that most people (including ISF techs) use are not going to work well with this technology.
A SpectroRadiometer (and not a SpectroPhotometer) is about the only way to calibrate this technology properly.
Bright House launches 4 new HD channels in Tampa, Florida {Engadget HD}
Jun 18th 2008 5:28PM it might not be an SDV launch, but none of the 4 channels listed here - nor even 709, are showing up on cablecard equiped sets.
THX to release Optimizer Blu-ray disc {Engadget HD}
May 15th 2008 8:24PM Despite claims of cash is king, no product ever submitted for THX certification has passed on the initial tests - additional mods and testing have been done on every product that bears the certification.
DISH Network's CEO admits to "missing the HD window" last year {Engadget HD}
May 14th 2008 6:32PM That's the difference in having a real plan - like Directv did - and trying to hobble together space junk thrown all over the sky between 61.5 West and 148 West.
Nice Strategy Charlie!
The lack of long term strategic planning falls squarely on your shoulders - as most classy execs were shown the door (or couldn't stand you) long ago.
Now its time to pay the piper.
DISH Network suffers 90% drop in subscriber growth during Q1 {Engadget HD}
May 13th 2008 12:44AM So you are admitting you were wrong on 5-5-2008 when you stated "If we had to guess, we'd say satellite / fiber are beginning to eat away at the coax-laden mothership."
Seem a satellite was not the only thing that Dish lost in Q1.

DISH Network rolls out 22 new HD channels {Engadget HD}
May 12th 2008 8:47PM They had to do this - as they got KILLED in Q1, despite what was predicted under the Comcast numbers a week ago. Cable and Directv is eating their lunch.
Dish Network Subscriber Growth Skids 89% In First Quarter.
Citing competition from the telcos and the worsening economy, Dish Network reported Monday that its first-quarter subscriber growth nosedived nearly 89% from a year ago, with only a 35,000 net subscriber gain. The precipitous decline in new subscribers comes less than a week after archrival DirecTV reported last week that it had added 275,000 new subscribers in its most recent quarter, a 17% increase.
Comcast thrives on broadband, digital phone subscriptions in Q1 {Engadget HD}
May 5th 2008 12:47PM You better rethink the "we" part of your analysis.
If 57,000 cheap/basic subs disappear - and 494,000 pick up the more expensive digital cable service - that's a huge victory. Furthermore, given the Internet and Phone gains, most likely those basic cable subs converted to triple play packages.
You are the first to predict good numbers for satellite in first quarter. Everyone else notes you cannot give away DBS subs in first quarter - and with the housing market at a standstill, they predict cable will smash Dish and Directv numbers in Q1.
The good thing is you can make dire predictions about coax and still be owned by Time Warner - and they don't censor you. Too bad you were wrong on this one though.
Raleigh's ABC11 Eyewitness News goes HD... eight years too late {Engadget HD}
Apr 24th 2008 1:06PM You are surprised about the rash of HD News announcements in the last week? Certainly you should know the May Sweeps are about to start and stations are looking for an added advantage - exactly the same as this time last year.
