Where is the Engadget HD Podcast? {Engadget HD}
Oct 30th 2006 2:51PM One topic that I would like to hear mentioned in your next podcast is the huge outcry that has occurred with DirecTV's rollout of the 6.3a software for the HD TiVo. An enormous number of people, myself included, are experiencing 10 second audio dropouts (mutes) on OTA channels, most often with FOX stations. Why it affects FOX more than others is not known, but the other channels are not totally immune either. It varies from city to city.
I was so annoyed by this that I reformatted my TiVo drive and rolled back to the old (3.1.5f) software. That fixed it.
Much more about this can be found over in the TiVo Community Forums (more than any human could ever read!)
DIRECTV's HD DVR coming out in August? {Engadget HD}
Aug 5th 2006 4:55AM I just bought a second HD TiVo in anticipation of it possibily not being available once the MPEG-4 DVR comes out. I don't need MPEG-4 -- I get my HD locals the old-fashioned way -- off-the-air. I can't imagine the user interface of this new box will match TiVo (but I am prepared to be proven wrong). Once the HD TiVo gets the long awaited 6.3 software, it'll be difficult if not impossible to beat. Of course, if you gotta have MPEG-4, it's not a viable option.
HD syndication: Seinfeld and Jeopardy {Engadget HD}
Apr 3rd 2006 9:04PM That is correct. SEINFELD was shot on 35mm film -- Sony spent MILLIONS re-transferring all of it from the original camera negative, then re-doing all the post-production in HD (it was previously posted in SD on 1-inch, and later, Digital Betacam). That meant literally re-doing EVERY edit on EVERY episode!
Unfortunately, if you read the thread in the AVSFORUM, not one person has reported seeing these being aired in HD in their market.
