As Dan pointed out, the lack of a Genesis/Faroudja is a big deal. In fact, if you look at the link above, you'll see under "OPPO Recommendations" that the 970 is NOT recommended for > 50 inch displays!

May 31st 2006 11:37AM Some differences I noticed:
1.) The analog outputs. I have the 971, and the component output is 480i only. The 970 adds progressive scan (480p). Actually, under the detailed specs the component out goes all the way up to 1080i, but is limited to 480p for CSS discs (basically, everything). But, if you're buying the Oppo players, it's not for the analog outputs ;-)
2.) The 970 uses HDCP. The 971 had no encryption on the DVI connection.

Apr 4th 2006 12:00PM I also agree with nemi. In addition, I find the cost of any form of DVI/HDMI switching available to be absolutely crazy. I cant imagine why it costs several hundred dollars to connect wires carrying a digital signal. A gigabit network switch can be had for much less than $100, and it has to have additional processing to determine where to route the signal dynamically!
Unless of course there is copy protection circuitry in the DVI/HDMI wire itself?
Personal thoughts on Comcast HD DVR {Engadget HD}
Oct 3rd 2005 3:40PM Comcast ran a free install, free first month on the DVR, so I also jumped in to give it a test spin. I have the dual tuner model. I never had a Tivo, but I did build my own MythTv box. So far I've had two glitches over 3 weeks: 1.) I paused a show, and when I resumed the video was messed up. I had to change to a different channel and then back to fix it, losing the buffer 2.) One of my HD recordings (CSI season premiere) was missing the center channel audio! There was no voice, only music and sound effects... it was really weird. From Myth, I miss two things so far: -a ton of recording options (especially the option to pad the start/end times globally) -a commercial skip (or at least a 30 sec jump) But it's THE easiest way to get HD timeshfiting, so overall I'm still happy.
