Microsoft pushes HD DVD {Engadget HD}

May 25th 2006 4:16PM To note, BD adds BD+ and ROM Mark. To counter what John claims, either ROM Mark or BD+ can be added to HD DVD at any point. There is no goal to "enable" them at a certain point.

ICT a non-issue till at least 2010? {Engadget HD}

May 21st 2006 11:00PM Again. AACS states 1080p over digital connections ONLY. No Blu-ray (or HD DVD) Player will be doing 1080p out of component.

And yes, component can handle 1080p fine. That doesn't mean you will be seeing any players supporting it. (Again, not a single one will)

The only way you might be able to see if the hardware itself supports over component is to get a disc with 1080p content without AACS (self-made disc for example).

Sony confirms no HDMI upgrade for base PS3 {Engadget HD}

May 20th 2006 5:00PM I've seen a lot of 1080p over component bits here. AACS (used in both HD DVD and Blu-ray) does not allow 1080p out of component. A max of 1080i can be done through component. This isn't dependant on ICT on or off. On of off, that max you can output through component is 1080i. Want 1080p? You must be using a digital connection (HDMI)

Vista requires a NTSC tuner - UPDATE 1 {Engadget HD}

May 20th 2006 4:53PM The EPG is keyed off of whatever analog source is chosen by the user (eg. DirecTV, Dish, Cable, etc). While I'm sure Microsoft would say it would be a lot of work to redo the design, it could be done. This is the reason the analog tuner is needed before setting up an ATSC tuner.

ICT a non-issue till at least 2010? {Engadget HD}

May 20th 2006 4:22PM I didn't read the page, but full resolution output must use a digital connection, ICT or not. AACS defines 1080p out of digital connections only (ie. HDMI-HDCP). You can't output 1080p out of component, ICT enable or not.

Ask HD Beat: DVD recorder with HDMI and DivX {Engadget HD}

Apr 17th 2006 12:43PM Generally...

DivX = Video Codec
DIVX = Digital Video Express (Circuit City pay-per-view format)

Although I would be interested in a DVD Recorder with HDMI that plays DIVX! ;)

HD-DVD Roadshow: a readers impressions {Engadget HD}

Apr 10th 2006 7:46PM A few things not correct here...

As Yaser said HDMI 1.3 is not needed for 1080p. The reason Toshiba's players can't output 1080p is because of the BRCM decoder doesn't support it (AFAIK).

It wouldn't be Microsoft's fault about Managed Copy, AACS is a whole group. The whole group would be the reason if the spec's aren't done.

HD DVD's peak bitrate is 29.4Mbps IIRC. That's peak, not constant.

Boycotting Blu-Ray and HD DVD is not the solution {Engadget HD}

Mar 22nd 2006 10:49AM Sure, it "allows" output of 1080i, but that's not the whole story.

1080i through component should only happen if ICT isn't set on the BD title. If ICT is set, a max of 540p will be output through component.

Vista may not arrive with HD media support, but will allow Blu-ray {Engadget}

Mar 19th 2006 7:10PM I have a post to clear up this issue a bit.

Vista To Support HD DVD Playback (not so much BD)

Joe Belfiore interview on WMCE - Engadget {Engadget HD}

Mar 6th 2006 1:25PM iHD in HD DVD will be used with most releases I'm sure, not just porn. :) There is a lot of new interesting things that iHD can do, and everyone can make use of it very nicely.
