TUAW Review: Logitech Harmony remote and the Mac {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Feb 11th 2008 10:51AM Also, since the settings are stored on Logitech's server, it makes it easy for support to help with any configuration issues. The first time I configured a Harmony remote, I could not get the TV to reliably switch inputs (the software wanted to rotate through the inputs).
Tech support told me the Harmony was actually able to jump directly to specific inputs and, instead of leaving me with that info, they tweaked my configuration on the server to use the correct inputs. All I had to do was re-launch the software and download the updated configuration.
Oh yeah, in addition to the support being free (at least for new purchases), they did this all for me on a Sunday. Could not be happier with the experience.
DoCoMo to carry iPhone in Japan? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Dec 19th 2007 7:37PM Er, @MWSF this year, at least for a few weeks.
DoCoMo to carry iPhone in Japan? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Dec 19th 2007 7:35PM During the iPhone rollout @MWSF last year, I believe either Jobs or Schiller said that the Japanese version might be a CDMA version since that was the dominant standard in the country.
TBS HD carriage deals, have to be some kind of record {Engadget HD}
Oct 1st 2007 3:36PM I'm not saying that the MLB playoffs were the only thing driving these deals, but the people interested in baseball can get pretty loud - this is a group that got the US Senate to question the potential exclusive deal between MLB and DirecTV earlier this year.
Workaround for iTunes Plus files on TiVo {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jun 8th 2007 3:55PM One more from me. You can fix this without needing to convert your music if you've got Apple's Developer Tools installed and your not averse to editing a line of Java code. Directions are at my blog.

Workaround for iTunes Plus files on TiVo {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jun 7th 2007 11:27PM Definitely a TiVo issue. TiVo's only transcoding certain file types, probably to prevent somebody from getting garbage spewed out of their speakers due to a bad conversion or something. They need to add "Purchased AAC audio file" to the list.
BTW, this string is pulled from you ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml file. When I changed "Purchased AAC audio file" to "AAC audio file," the file I changed played (after I restarted TiVo Desktop). There was some stuttering, but that could be cause my computer's pretty old.

Jun 7th 2007 10:47PM Well, the two year old auto-conversion trick doesn't work. I assume most of you know that already.
The SoundConvert utility that TiVo uses to do the transcoding will process the new files. I was able to run it on the commandline with an iTunes+ file and the resulting MP3 sounds fine, at least in my highly limited testing.
I don't know why they don't auto convert the files. Perhaps a TiVo Desktop update would fix this. The last update was last May and was primarily for Intel support. It wouldn't surprise me if the next release doesn't come until Leopard ships.
TUAW Tip: Address Book offers a lot of handy contact management {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jun 7th 2007 9:03PM Thanks for the note - I'd forgotten about dupe detection. That feature should make the updating the 70+ contacts I have sitting in an Excel spreadsheet less painful.

Jun 7th 2007 4:50PM Two+ years ago, it was reported that TiVo Desktop would auto-transcode unprotected AAC files if you installed lame.

Didn't try this then, haven't tried it with any iTunes+ files. Might be worth checking out.
Macs making a comeback at Circuit City? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Sep 4th 2006 1:09PM Third hand stuff, so take what you want from it. A friend of the family works at Circuit City and is being trained by Apple to run the Mac section at his store. Apparently, they're starting with something like a dozen stores.
