Dec. 23: What's on HDTV today {Engadget HD}

Dec 24th 2005 12:12AM The verdict is in.....D-VHS is still king! Yes, Fox looked good, but.....i watched the fox presentation with adelphia 8300hd box via hdmi on my xbr960. i also played the movie on component input 5 using my jvc-40000 d-vhs player...i switched back and forth, and the 4 people watching with me all agreed that hands down, the fox viewing didn't have the tact sharpness, nor the 3 dimensional appeal that the d-vhs showed. yes, both inputs were isf callibrated by a technician earlier this year...

Dec. 23: What's on HDTV today {Engadget HD}

Dec 23rd 2005 4:33PM Now this is one i can't wait to see! This is my favorite D-VHS tape! In High def (at least on d-vhs), it's the most crisp, 3 dimensional, eye-popping thrill of all time! My friends who have seen it on d-vhs were stunned! Let's see what fox does with it tonight..i can't imagine being as floored as i am with the d-vhs tape!

Buzz wants an HDTV, can you help? {Engadget HD}

Dec 22nd 2005 1:02PM This is an easy one...Buzz is very much like me....With College Basketball a must, I would absolutely stay away from LCD! The refresh rates aren't quite there yet, meaning you'll see lots of pixellation when the camera pans quickly! Also, the two main channels HD college ball are NBC, and CBS...both are 1080i native....Quick sports looks much better on a 720p native channel...abc, fox...also, i'm not a big dlp fan when it comes to fast moving sports either....Personally, i'd increase budget only a few hundred bucks and get either the 37 inch or 42 inch panasonic plasma...th-42px50u, or the th-37px50u....you can get the 37 inch for approx. 2100 and the 42 inch for approx. 2400.....try digitalcraze.com....they are very reasonable and i've done business with them and they are reliable...good luck

Estate shopping on a Sunday morning {Engadget HD}

Dec 12th 2005 4:05PM I'm originally from the surrounding areas, and i know of the house your speaking of....what's really ironic, is that 4-5 years ago, this house could have been had for probably 4 million....."if i knew yesterday, what i know today!!!!"

Ultimate AVs review of Hitachi 42HDT52 plasma {Engadget HD}

Dec 12th 2005 3:52PM Last years model received an excellent review from Randy Tomlinson over @ Perfect Vision. He has very high praise for the Hitachi plasma, and i'm sure this model is no different...If you cut through the chase of the review, you'll realize this t.v. is a winner. Also, i have the pioneer pro plasma (not the latest model) and it too, has received stellar reviews minus the same black level issue...To tell you the truth, only when watching very dark movies, does it remotely begin to make a difference...the picture on this set and the hitachi set is unbelievably sharp and unless your a full-fledged ocd videophile, the whole black level issue won't mean a thing in the real world! good luck..

Hitachi/Fujitsu produces smallest 1080p plasma, 42" {Engadget HD}

Dec 9th 2005 9:14PM Jason - The question becomes...how close is one going to sit that it really matters...The truth is, anything past 4 feet on a 42 inch, and the extra pixels don't mean squat...better yet, how bout this example...i was viewing the new sxrd 60 inch the other day...while it's true that from a foot, the screen door effect is certainly better than at the same distance on the sammy dlp or jvc lcos....but, go back to 4 feet and no screen door on either...yes, the sony was clearly sharper...but my buddy at the store took the pionner pdp plasma 50 incher and it put it next to it...and at 1280x720, just as sharp from 4-5 ft. away and from a foot...damn close!

What's in store for home theaters? In-stat thinks they know {Engadget HD}

Dec 8th 2005 10:47AM I disagree...i believe that once the high def dvd's hit the market, most people will shy away from buying a product that can potentially be a dinosaur in the foreseeable future...furthermore, with players set to hit the market at approx. $1000 to start, it won't be too long until the competition has 'em out at sub 500 prices...also, considering that hd-dvd appears to be backwards compatible, it'll even be more reason for the public not to move back in time, but to move forward...most of all, when people see just how good things can look, they'll be hooked....the only reason d-vhs didn't work, is because the public couldn't be convinced that a vhs tape made any sense...also, people thought that hd dvd formats would hit the market much sooner at the time.....granted, i watch fifth element on my 34xbr960 using my panny rp82 dvd player, and i'm telling you, i can't imagine the picture getting much better...its as close to high def as your going to get....but then again, i watch something about mary on dvd...then watch it on d-vhs high def, and its like night and day...only time will tell.....

The best explanation of 720p vs. 1080i EVER. {Engadget HD}

Dec 8th 2005 10:42AM I think my explanation last week was perfect for everybody including the novice....after i posted, somebody replied that i left out the whole issue of 60fps...??? I intentionally left it out....For most people, it's not about 24, 30, or 60 fps...it's explaining how they can see the difference....and yes, there is a big difference....true videophiles prefer 720p...while 1080p is the next step, most people will never experience it....the tv stations will never broadcast in 1080p...unless of course mpeg-4 allows for it....the newest generation hd-dvd, blu-ray might not support it in the first generation...and most of all, just about all of the newest tv's that are native 1080p, can't accept a true 1080p input anyway....it's got a long way to go!

Hitachi/Fujitsu produces smallest 1080p plasma, 42" {Engadget HD}

Dec 8th 2005 10:37AM To be very frank, this is a perfect example of the power of a buzzword...Here the buzzword is "1080p." I have the Pioneer Pro 43 inch plasma, and the picture is awesome! At that size, i can't imagine the picture getting any crisper! I think 1080p at anything less than 50 inches is irrelevant! And to be honest, even at 50 inches it won't make the biggest difference! I think 1080p will make the biggest difference at the 60+ inch, and projector arena.

720p or 1080i: poll results {Engadget HD}

Dec 2nd 2005 10:32AM Just wanted to add my 2 cents....If you ask the 720p vs. 1080i question to anybody that really understands the difference, including myself, than 720p will always be the winner...The best way to understand this is to watch an NFL HD game on CBS, then view a game on FOX...When the action is still, you won't notice a difference...When the camera's are moving though, you'll see that on the 1080i game, the screen begins to show pixels with a sort of tiling effect....That's the biggest benefit to a progressive shot! Sure, some will say "but wait a minute, 1080i has more lines resolution, so it's gotta be better"...in the real world, it's almost impossible to see the difference." some people have said that nightime shows on the major networks look more film-like in 720p, and perhaps, a bit more sharp in 1080i...i tend to agree with that statement. either way, 720p or 1080i....it's all good!
