Sharp's 108-inch LCD now yours for $100,000 {Engadget HD}
Jun 22nd 2008 11:10AM I'll take the Panasonic anyday and everyday.
Have they been putting the AntiGlare coating on it?
That coating works pretty good.
Sony's 46-inch KDL-46W4100 LCD HDTV gets reviewed {Engadget HD}
Jun 7th 2008 7:26PM Hmmm. I'm unfamiliar with bad image quality on this unit. Fluctuating Black Levels are common on most LCDs using advanced contrace algorhythms.
Dunno, it looks pretty good to me.
Samsung, LG to buy LCD panels from each other {Engadget HD}
May 21st 2008 10:40PM makes sense. All the Japanese guys are buckling down.
Toshiba is buying Sharp Panels, Sharp buying circuits from Toshiba. Sony and Sharp are going build a new plant, Sony and Samsung will continue to operate S-LCD as well. Hitachi and Mitsubishi are also buying from Sharp, but none of them seem to know how to make decent use of them, thank god for sony and toshiba.
Samsung LN52A650 review {Engadget HD}
May 8th 2008 5:42PM See, SONY uses a 3M anti glare filter. These both reduce glare, which in turn keeps it from changing the color value, AND blocks a miniscule amount of light. The Bravia Engine Pro does a great job of Dynamic Range Optimization (it appears to behave like that) to bring out the dark details and maintain a dark gradient.
Samsung, as far as i know,is using stock ATi processors and hasn't adjusted it too much. They just 'let the light shine through' with what appears to be EXACTLY the same coversheet as a SONY XBrite laptop. In other words, more light is 'more contrast' technically, BUT, uh.. wow, the glare sucks big time.
I tell everyone to treat these Reflective LCD Panels the same as a Plasma in where you want to place it. People still seem to like these to plasma since they appear to be sharper with 120htz. If Panasonic or Pioneer implement 120htz motion frame interpolation on their 480htz effective plasma panels, they would solve that issue.
For my money,the best TV's on the market are Panasonics with AntiGlare coatings (better than their Anti Reflective coating) and an XBR4 or XBR5.
Mid Range, Toshiba's look really nice when you turn down the Green Drive and increase the Blue Drive to compensate for the human eye's reception preferences.
There is not enough significant difference between a Toshiba and a Vizio to warrent buying something that lowend. So, if you aren't spending much money, a lowerend SONY V panel or a Toshiba, if you are spending money, you need to check out the first two i talked about.
Is your Comcast HD quality up to snuff? {Engadget HD}
Mar 26th 2008 11:23PM I have a quick and wierd story to tell you.
My Motorola box was acting up. It just wouldn't change channels from whatever it was on and froze.
I called Comcast and reported a problem with the automated number. It said something like 'Press 2 now to 2 have our system perform a reset, wait approximately 20 minutes for this to take effect'.
Well, normally, i'd say 'no', but, it was early AM on a sunday and i literally had nothing to lose.
Well, a half hour later it blipped and came back on.
Here is the wierd thing. My mother immediately stated how much better things looked, so i looked at it and had to concur. We had rented the TMNT Movie recently on comcast in HD, we also had watched the SD version on HBO, both really looked aweful. So, I noticed that SD was coming on again in 3 minutes. I switched to it. WOW. The SD version now actually looked 'better' than the HD version we remembered and murdered the 'same' SD from the week before. This is a 'color quality/contrast vs Resolution' issue. The colors and detail were ALOT better.
You MIGHT want to try this and call comcast claiming your box is bonkers and to perform this automatic reset. If this is an update they REALLY need to get it out to everyone.
This is all i have to say.
Maryland Market btw.
How would you change the outcome of the 700MHz auction? {Engadget}
Mar 21st 2008 11:13PM Telecom industry is my weakness in the field of technology. Did Sprint win any other auctions or is the XOHM network their 4G solution end to end including phone? I see TMobile didn't get squat either. That's an article. Can someone at Engadget do a 4G Wireless Telecom wrapup article?
Asus Nova P22 hits the States in all its spendy, miniature glory {Engadget}
Mar 20th 2008 1:14PM I could really use an AMD Phenom B3 with 780G variant, thanks,.
NVIDIA thinking about acquiring VIA? {Engadget}
Mar 18th 2008 3:27PM That'd be the best move they could ever make. It puts all 3 heavy hitters in a good position. VIA brings with it S3, so, uh, everyone's about to pay Nvidia some patents. This is going to be hilarious.

Ask Engadget HD: Is now the time to replace my 720p HDTV with a 1080p set? {Engadget HD}
Mar 15th 2008 8:55PM This is only worth it for those who:
A: Browse the web or Work off of a PC using the TV as a monitor, as you probably aren't getting native resolution in any way shape of form out of a 720 class set with the exception of 720p DLPs and the one Pioneer Plasma from 2005 which had a panel resolution of 1280x720 (which was a damn nice set btw, i just can't remember the model number and haven't the desire to research it). 1080p sets give you greater screen real estate and pixel perfect unscaled output for a PC interface.
B: To people who's primary usage is to watch movies off an HD source who's primary content format is 1080p, pretty much just Bluray.
That's it.
Everyone else, if you have the means, sure, go ahead. If it was a 5-10 year investment, you should be safe if whatever you are recieving now works fine.
