Ask Engadget HD: Which AV receiver has the best upscaling chip? {Engadget HD}
Jul 9th 2008 1:46PM Before you buy the Sony...please note that this unit just cost me over $200 in restocking fees because it would not work with my present projector. The HDMI handshake will not happen if you have a DVI adaptor between the Sony and your display. Check out the fourms for other serious problems folks have experienced. Also be sure that there is a green dot next to your serial number before you accept the unit as this indicated that it has the latest (and sorely needed upgrade software). For me the Sony was a wonderful dream...and a miserable reality! I am going back to Denon
Ask Engadget HD: What's the best home theater projector? {Engadget HD}
Jun 25th 2008 5:57PM I covet the JVC RS2or its brother HD100. I've had nothing but trouble with my InFocus Screenplay 7210. I am determined to select the best model this time around.
I don't think that I'll upgrade, however, until there is a universal acceptance of the lampless projectors. One has just been introduced and it should set the pace for other companies to follow suit. Interestingly enough, now there is the added problem with compatibility with 3D designs that are also starting to appear.
Voom goes HD VOD {Engadget HD}
Jun 14th 2008 3:59PM It seems OK for folks to beat up on the Voom network but I genuinely miss them. People who come into my home theatre universally want to see great HD. I used to merely dial up any of the Voom channels (especially RUSH) and the "ohs and ahs" would begin.
I am truly disappointed with Mr. Ergin's unwillingness to continue to try to strike a deal. His attiitude on the last "Charlie Chat" was disturbing and extremely self-serving. He talked about "honor" and "honesty" but his claims fell on deaf ears to me. Frankly, if the Court Documents from VOOM are correct then dropping VOOM has nothing really to do with repeats, it's all about the damaging deal Dish signed with VOOM. I wish I knew the truth about the situation but I doubt we ever will. I did take time to pause, however, and reflect on a young Charlie Ergen fighting the good fight to keep "C band" open for everyone. I loved his tenatious fight to keep the likes of the large MSOs from beating up on we poor little satellite owners. He is no longer the hero he used to be to me, however, and without VOOM services I'll drop my long time status as one of Dish's preferred customers once I've fulfilled my obligations.
DISH Network's AMC-14 satellite fails to reach orbit {Engadget HD}
Mar 15th 2008 12:37PM The truly sad thing is that America has seen fit to let foreign countries command the lead in so many of the "technology" arenas that we clearly pioneered. As I look around my home theatre, I can't find a single component that was made in the USA.
I wish I had the political savvy to understand how we could bring back to our shores the support for, and the development of, innovations that would be a hallmark of the USA.
I hope Charlie had this bird insured and, of course, I'll continue to hold out hope that there might be just enough fuel left to put AMC 14 in its assigned orbit.
Meridian announces MF10 1080p D-ILA projector at EHX {Engadget HD}
Mar 15th 2008 4:11AM You guys seem to be right--"why pay the extra cash for a unit that seems substantially like the JVC PJ's?"
I can't seem to get an answer from local dealers as to the difference between the JVC RS2 and the HD100. Anyone have experience with these units? Thanks
Audiophiles can't tell the difference between Monster Cable and coat hangers {Engadget HD}
Mar 4th 2008 1:56AM What a fool am I....
I'll NEVER purchase another product with the Monster logo. I admit to fraility of mind and advertising madness as I bought:
1. Monster Power Conditioner ($1000): It went failure after a few weeks but gave no indication that it was malfunctioning. Tech support treated me with flip retorts to my questions.
2. Monster Surge protector for projectors ($350). This unit is a wonderful concept and a miserable reality. It is supposed to keep the projector's fan motor running during a blackout situation. Its nature was to sound an alarm when no power problems were indicated. This was checked by my local power company who placed one of their recording devices on my line for a week. On top of that, the unit never kept the fan mottor running during a real crisis. And finally,
3. Monster High End transmission cables to connect the receiver and the projector in my home theatre. With this cable the height of misery occurred when it was run through the walls and ceiling only to find that, after hours of problem solving, that the cable had a connector which had been improperly soldered.
Now at least I know why the "Head Monster" can afford that fabulous home in California. What we probably don't see, however, is the fact that he's undoubtedly replaced at least some of his cabeling with sensible connectors from Monoprice!

Albany, New York CBS affiliate (WRGB) begins broadcasting news in HD {Engadget HD}
Jan 23rd 2008 10:23AM Interestingly enough, WRGB was the first TV station that I ever viewed. Back in the 50's it was on Channel 4 and it opened a life-long interest in technology for me. Congrats WRGB...great to see you're still the leader in the area.
DISH Network unveils 100 HD channels and 100 markets {Engadget}
Jan 7th 2008 12:12PM Does anyone know if Direct TV has a comparable receiver to my Dish 722? I love the unit but my loyalty to Dish is waining. I get locals OTA but use the 722 as the tuner.
Poll: What's your most anticipated HD technology for 2008? {Engadget HD}
Dec 29th 2007 3:52PM I'd love to see some truly remarkable breakthroughs for 3D transmissions and products--preferably those technologies without glasses. I am hoping that CES shows us the wave of the future in this arena.
On a much more personal and practical note, I'd like to see '08 be the year LED bulbs became a viable reality for projection units.
