What the New York Times "death by blogging" story got right. {The Jason Calacanis Weblog}
Apr 10th 2008 7:50PM Nice post. Almost a wake-up call. I'm a young guy, but I find that I am more stressed than most people I know, whether they be younger or older than me. I think I used to confuse that with being more "driven" - or maybe it's both.
Nevertheless, I think it's time that everyone who is in our line of work to realize that we are spending a huge portion of the day sitting in one position, only moving our eyes and fingers. We can't be satisfied with that, we've got to do more if we want to be healthy.
I think I am going to hire a personal trainer, just based off of your post, Jason.
One question - do you think that, since you don't really feel the stress anymore, that you may be putting extra stress on those that work for you because you don't realize that THEY are feeling it? Just curious.
Should Google, Yahoo, Mahalo, etc. ban affiliate links? (or "Will the FTC ban undisclosed affiliate links for us all?") {The Jason Calacanis Weblog}
Feb 29th 2008 2:16PM I must say, I think it is right to disclose anything and everything you are being paid for if it isn't obviously an advertisement. So a banner ad for example, that is obvious. It doesn't need text around it stating that it is an advertisement. You mentioned the Chitika ads that are on Gear Live to me at CES and how you weren't sure about them, and that got me thinking about them as well. I had thought that they were obviously advertising and that anyone would realize that, but I think that sometimes, we as geeks tend to forget that not everyone sees everything the way that we do.
So I asked around. People like my siblings who could care less about tech or the Internet, people like my Grandmother, etc. What I found, at least where Chitika is concerned, is that everyone realized that when they saw that, they were being advertised to at that point. However, I still think they can be better labeled maybe?
But then I compare it to Adsense, which Google labels automatically. I would think that, side by side, the graphic-rich Chitika block would be MORE obvious than an Adsense skyscraper.
The other thing about Chitika is that is pays the same way that Adsense does - CPC. My understanding (which I am the first to admit, may be incorrect) of affiliate links are that they pay a lot more than CPC based products, but the person has to actually take some sort of action like buying a product or giving their personal information AFTER clicking.
Rumor: New MacBook Pro shows up in Apple, Best Buy inventory system {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Feb 25th 2008 3:08PM Cory - there is no price increase there. Those three prices match the current MacBook Pro pricing lineup ;)

iPhone v1.1.3 screenshots leaked? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Dec 29th 2007 12:12PM Wow - great reporting you guys did here. You know, alleging that the photos are fake, but not contacting us, like, at all - that's awesome. Kudos.
Oh, and Gear Live being "new" to the Mac rumors "game"? First, what we posted aren't rumors. Those are real pictures that I took of my "real" iPhone running the real 1.1.3 firmware. Secondly, we've been around for almost four years.
So, who knows, maybe some fact-checking might do you guys a bit of good. Just because you weren't able to get it before we did doesn't automatically make it false.
Web 3.0, the "official" definition. {The Jason Calacanis Weblog}
Oct 3rd 2007 10:52PM Ugh...when will people get off this whole 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 thing? Web 2.0 is a conference and expo. Just because people started doing things differently and started using new tools, that doesn't mean there was/is/will be a new version of the Internet. And how can ANYONE "define" Web 3.0 at the moment anyway? I have heard no less than 8 definitions of "Web 3.0" since July - and all are vastly different from each other. Sheez.
Verizon cutting copper during fiber installs to get lockin? {The Jason Calacanis Weblog}
Oct 3rd 2007 3:20PM That isn't the only thing. If you buy a NEW house in a FiOS area, you simply don't get copper by default. They aren't laying copper anymore in the new areas, JUST fiber.
That's what happened to us here in our new house. We have the most amazing consumer Internet speed in the country at 30.0/5.0, but we also have no copper coming to the house. We use Vonage though, so it isn't a huge concern for us.
