Ask Engadget HD: What's the best remote for Sony's PlayStation 3? {Engadget HD}
Oct 8th 2008 4:45PM you don't need a macro to turn off the PS3:
USBIRX3:

PRONTO HEX:

this has been working for quite some time, not sure if a recent firmware update has disabled it as i don't own a PS3, but haven't had any clients call me yet wondering why the PS3 won't shut off.

Oct 8th 2008 2:43PM i thought this was engadget? are you all really using logitech harmony remotes????
seriously? come on people! you don't have to spend a lot to get a remote that's 1000% better than harmony. it's not a question of price, it's a question of whether you need an online "wizard" to program it. i would think the readers here would be more than capable of this, and would understand the horrific weakness embodied by the harmonies... in the consumer AV world, harmonies are a joke. period.
look at the URC RF30:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16880120003&nm_mc=OTC-C173T&cm_mmc=OTC-C173T-_-Digital+Media+Remote-_-Universal+Remote+Control-_-80120003
$70 gets you a much more capable platform, which can then be paired with an MRF100 for another $50 if you'd like to locate ALL your gear in another room, not just the PS3.
i was confused when i read the line "That dreaded Bluetooth control protocol cuts out the vast majority of remotes from consideration". that's crazy talk. also, someone mentioned that sony "overlooked" the IR sensor. i laughed out loud. how many bluetooth remotes has sony sold, and how much more profit is there in accessories than components? helloooo....
full disclosure: i'm a custom installer who routinely installs $1k+ control solutions, so i may be a tad biased, but again, the URC i mentioned is cheap, much more customizable and easier to use than any harmony. harmony = the bose of the control industry.
Seattle's KING 5 shuts of analog for 30 seconds, select viewers freak out {Engadget HD}
Jul 29th 2008 2:43AM did they shut if of or did they shut if off?
Ask Engadget HD: Which gaming console suits HD junkies best? {Engadget HD}
May 29th 2008 1:28AM just to add to your excellent review:
sony didn't have to include a headset, any bluetooth headset works with the PS3, just like a cellphone. :)
Ask Engadget HD: HD projector or HDTV? {Engadget HD}
May 21st 2008 2:06PM LCD panels are still not dark enough. black levels on plasmas are still the best. if you go flat panel, get a plasma from pioneer elite, panasonic or samsung. if you want the biggest screen for the money, go rear projection DLP, samsung is the best. 61" or 70" 1080P is the best bang for the buck, as long as you don't mind the depth (which is really not much when you think about it. you can even get a 50" that's only 10" deep!).
120" screen with an optoma 720p is a great setup, but only if you can get the room dark, and it helps if you know your way around a 5' flex-auger drill bit and a fish tape.
Sony's monolithic NHS-130C Home Entertainment Rack seen early {Engadget HD}
May 2nd 2008 4:47PM "TrentD @ May 2nd 2008 1:56PM
It's not component via Ethernet, it's component via balanced line UTP, to clarify."
you're right sir, but some baluns have active DACs and convert to PCM, meaning the signal is actually not balanced. just a thought.
as far as that SONY/CONTROL4 setup, i would much rather spend the same money on a middle atlantic rack, crestron control system, and qsonix music server. the av distribution is easy enough using muxlab or gefen baluns.

Apr 21st 2008 1:07PM sorry about the duplicate posts, they weren't showing up last night.
it's not just 49%, philips is also offering their share, another 12%.
magnolia is ok i guess.... it just feels weird to think of a manufacturing company being bought by a retail outfit. makes me feel like costco is buying chevy or something.

Apr 21st 2008 4:23AM i recommend denon receivers, marantz control systems, and boston speakers to my clients first because these are the best brands in their categories before entering into the high-end market (levinson, mcintosh, revel, crestron, being a bit too expensive for my current client base, and also harder lines to get).
it upsets me that they keep switching hands. reminds me of how land rover and jaguar were just bought by an indian company.
doesn't being the best at your price point count for anything? if best buy ends up owning mcintosh, the world really is coming to an end. i don't think there's much chance the new managers will be able to restrain themselves and leave well enough alone. if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it!
