Joost testing PlayStation 3 specific browser interface {Engadget HD}

Jun 19th 2009 4:00PM I'll check it out, but there's nothing "strange" about a slow PS3 browser, as anyone can easily learn by googling "slow ps3 browser".

Jun 18th 2009 3:53PM Don't think there's anything wrong with the hard drive. The unit's seen very little use and it's been doing this as long as I can remember. If it was a bad HD, it would have failed by now. On Windows systems, hard drive thrashing is caused by too little RAM. I'm inclined to believe the OS/firmware is at fault.

Jun 18th 2009 12:31PM My PS3 browser is so slow, I rarely use it. It takes a couple of minutes to display the youtube XL home page. Playing a video in Hulu is hit or miss, and takes forever to load. It thrashes its hard drive interminably, and often hangs after playing a youtube video. It's not my internet connection because I have no such problems with my PC which is several years older than my PS3.

NAB disputes Nielsen's numbers, claims only 1.75 million unready for transition {Engadget HD}

Jun 11th 2009 4:22PM I'm really gonna believe the numbers of a lobbying group over those of a disinterested professional poller....right.

Jun 6th 2009 12:00PM Nick, to you old people include anyone past the age of 9. I say this because "retard" & "dumb" are words typically used by 2nd graders.

YouTube rebrands TV web portal "YouTube XL" {Engadget HD}

Jun 3rd 2009 4:57PM I watched "where the hell is matt?" on both my Vista HTPC and my PS3. It's in HD on the HTPC and nearly unwatchable SD? on the PS3. So the "no HD" info is not entirely correct.

My PS3 has a heckuva time with Youtube. The hard drive thrashes interminably and it takes forever for thumbnails to display, much less the video. Even after it's downloaded, there seem to be frequent pauses in playback.

Linksys discontinues Media Center Extenders, hardly anyone notices {Engadget HD}

May 18th 2009 12:18PM I looked at extenders for months, but finally decided on a DIY HTPC because I couldn't find an extender that did everything I wanted:
- play Apple lossless (ALAC) from iTunes
- play a couple internet radio stations that Squeezebox and others won't play
- Netflix streaming
- Hulu
- etc.
There are a number of devices that do most of these, but ALAC tended to be the deal killer more often than not. I already had a huge commitment to the ALAC format before I figured out that there was little support for it outside of Apple devices. I know I could have converted the files, but I'm happy with the versatility of my HTPC.

90 percent of consumers think they should be allowed to back up DVDs {Engadget HD}

Apr 9th 2009 6:18PM Sorry to dash your hopes, Fuzz, but it hasn't happened yet in my decade of DVD playing. Nice thought, however.

Jon, there is absolutely no way ripping DVDs (and playing them from a hard drive) won't consume much more of your time. Hard drives are cheap, but DVD players are cheaper and everyone has one already. Don't forget buying the software, and media player/networking equipment if you're going to play them from your computer. That has to be setup too. It's simply not a good trade off given the exceedingly unlikely event of a broken DVD.
