Sony sticks with MPEG-2 for Blu-Ray {Engadget HD}
Nov 30th 2005 8:16PM Yeah, the article is just talking about Sony Pictures. Blu-Ray will still support the other MPEG-4 formats, but Sony Pictures have decided that for their initial releases they'll use MPEG-2. The quality will still be top-notch but I have a feeling that there won't be many extras (or they won't be in HD). As soon as you need to release 2+ hour movies and also have a lot of extras MPEG-2 will not suffice. This is when the newer codecs will come in handy (same quality much less space).
The growing pains of DirecTV {Engadget HD}
Sep 19th 2005 1:38PM I notice this on all DirecTV HD channels. The compression is terrible and I really hope they use the MPEG-4 capabilities of the new receivers/satellites to provide for a better picture and not just crap hundreds of highly compressed HD channels. It's already depressing how poor the quality is on the "HD" channels.
