Asus shows off HDMI-equipped Xonar DX and Xonar AV1 sound cards {Engadget HD}
Feb 28th 2008 12:41PM According to the link, it sounds like it will capture video, which I would think is why it needs a pcie slot. I'm sure HDCP will smash our hopes and dreams to the ground though.
Michael Bay singlehandedly wins the HD format war {Engadget HD}
Feb 14th 2008 2:19PM I miss you more then Michael Bay missed the mark
When he made Pearl Harbor
I miss you more than that movie missed the point
And that’s an awful lot girl
And now, now you’ve gone away
And all I’m trying to say is
Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you
I need u like Ben Affleck needs acting school
He was terrible in that film
I need u like Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part
He’s way better than Ben Affleck
And now all I can think about is your smile
and that shitty movie too
Pearl Harbor sucked and I miss you
Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies?
I guess Pearl Harbor sucked
Just a little bit more than I miss you
Finally the $200 Sony Blu-ray drive for a PC {Engadget HD}
Jan 7th 2008 10:17AM Who cares. The real news is, how much is it going to cost at Newegg?

Why does everyone feel they need to deviate from the norm?
Sim2 announces $12,000 Domino 80E projector {Engadget HD}
Dec 11th 2007 9:44AM I can't vouche for this, as I don't see the rainbow effect, but I've read that only happens in single wheel dlp configs, which makes sense if you think about how the color wheel works. By the name and price, I'd assume it was a 3 wheeler.
While I'm a fan of the bang for your buck you get with DLP; for that price, I'd rather have a Marquee 9500LC. Or pocket the money and continue using my 8500. I have yet to see a 1080p projector in any consumer shop that tops my middle of the line 8500.
TotalHD gets the axe {Engadget HD}
Nov 16th 2007 12:34PM As much as I'd like to jump in the fray of "they're dropping ______ format", has anyone considered that maybe the cost of a BR/HD-DVD combo will cost too much. Look at the HD-DVD/DVD combos. They cost 5 bucks more. Considering how cheap DVDs cost, why would you pay 5 more dollars when you can buy the DVD cheap, wait for the winner and upgrade later, which in the long run, will probably cost less.
Only videophiles care about this war. To everyone else, it's a disc that costs too much money for the improved picture.
DVD Forum approves 51GB triple-layer HD DVD spec {Engadget HD}
Nov 16th 2007 12:25PM Specs have nothing to do with the number of layers.
Layers are read by setting the laser to a different temperature. If the temperature required is between the hotest and lowest temp the laser is acapable of, a firmware update is the onlything needed, if they didn't already plan this since it has probably been in the works. Old players can play it, current specs are met. I'd doubt the DVD forum to approve it if all players couldn't play them with or without a firmware update. This is "probably" true for the fabled quad layer BR disk. I say fabled, because, until I see it used in production, it is not worth bragging about, like this.
This disc sounds great on paper, but will it ever be used is the question? No one, other then BR supporters have claimed 30 gigs are not enough. If 2 dual layers cost twice as much as 1 triple, will they use it? Price may come down, and I am just speculating the price; and they may use them, but until I buy a disc that does, it's meaningless.
Sony's PS3 sales in US more than double since price cut {Engadget HD}
Nov 15th 2007 10:20AM Come on now, they don't compare apples to apples. Look at the attach rate, which includes the PS3.
Hmmmm, maybe they did that because it shows the PS3 isn't being used to watch movies, since most people who can't spell 1080p, let alone know what it means are unable to deduce that from the 2 to 1 sales ratio.
I stand corrected.
Sony's Stringer: Blu-ray vs. HD DVD battle a "stalemate" {Engadget HD}
Nov 9th 2007 1:19PM I find it hard to believe that they are taking a 500% loss and would love to see their disection of it. They were liquidating to make room for the A3, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was some loss, 500%. I also think it is interesting that the same company has not performed a disection of a BR player. I wonder what the percentages of profit are for them?
It really makes me wonder where they get their prices. I may be able to buy a CPU for 100 bucks locally, but if it costs $5 to make, the research has been done, techsupport is minimal, packaging is substantially cheaper, and they bid between AMD for the cheapest price, selling the chip for $10 is still going to make them a boat load of money, especially if the format wins. Intel is backing HD-DVD, so you can bet they got a good deal. I'm sure the other vendors involved probably helped out as well.
Why didn't they provide us with pictures with vendor names stamped on it? What is the break down of the costs? Give me an itemized spreadsheet. Next thing we're going to have vicious unsubstantiated rumors of Warner Bros picking a side. Oh wait.........
Spider-Man 3 didn't break any records on Blu-ray its first week {Engadget HD}
Nov 9th 2007 12:56PM What did they expect? While I enjoyed the movie it wasn't as good as the first two. At times, the acting felt like it was an episode of the Brady bunch. I never wanted to punch Harry in the first one, but as soon as he got amnesia, he became a 2000s version of Mr. Rogers.
