Dec 26th 2008 11:31AM A Vudu box would bring Festivus for the rest of us who want to ditch our cable company
Poll: Are $200 Blu-ray players cheap enough for you? {Engadget HD}
Sep 27th 2008 5:21PM People who look to this $200 price as some magic price when sales are going to finally take off aren't understanding what happened back in the days of the VCR to DVD transition. $200 was the threshold mass-market acceptance price for DVD because that is what a good VCR cost back then. Folks were used to buying their video viewing machine for around $200 and as soon as the new-fangled machine (DVD) came within that price range, there was no reason to resist going for it.
Today however is a new day and a new threshold price exists. Folks are now used to buying their video machines (DVD) for less than $100. Bluray players must satisfy the same pricing conditions to supplant DVD, as DVD had to satisfy to supplant the VCR. In other words, people must be able to buy Bluray players for about the same amount of money that they expect to spend on a good DVD player.
So until BLuray players can be had for close to $100 it won't get any serious traction in the mass market.
Netflix CFO doesn't anticipate Blu-ray to greatly impact sales {Engadget HD}
Sep 17th 2008 10:19AM Studios already have a moneymaker in DVD's. What's the point in investing in new technology (Bluray) if they can't charge a premium for it? Take away the premium and what really is the incentive for the studios at this time?
VUDU readying Blu-ray quality rentals {Engadget HD}
Sep 10th 2008 2:46AM Ummm, compared to the time it takes for me to get the blurays I rent from netflix, vudu's 3 hours from order to viewing feels downright instantaneous. If they price this thing right, they'll steal netflix's dessert
Dish's new ViP612 - like the ViP622, but now with less {Engadget HD}
Jan 8th 2008 10:21AM As the other posters have pointed out, the vip622 has only ONE HD out. The other output is an SD out and is useless if you have another HDTV and you want to watch HD on it. So really, as far as HD goes, there is no difference between the vip622 and the new vip612. Matter of fact, if you are an HD only house, the new vip612 makes more sense.
Third installment of Pirates moves 160k Blu-ray discs {Engadget HD}
Dec 13th 2007 6:01PM Shoddy journalism. You use Nielson to "debunk" paramounts 190k figure while in the same article you are giving credence to a Pirates sales figure that came from a very vague "sources." It should have at least raised a red flag in your mind when Disney refused to comment. WHen was the last time a company refused to comment on good news? How about waiting on Nielson to see if they "debunk" this to since your standard is Nielson. Be consistent.
Video Business breaks down Black Friday sales figures {Engadget HD}
Dec 12th 2007 1:24PM It would be interesting to know what was the actual revenue from the Bluray movies sold vs the revenue from the HDDVD movies. Interesting that they mentioned player revenue but not movie revenue. I suspect that the devil in the details is that with all the BOGO activity, revenue from actual movie sales don't look too hot on the Blu side. It puzzles me that no one has yet explored that angle since the conversation seems to now include sales revenue.
WealthTV conspiracy theorists issue anti-Engadget press release {Engadget HD}
Dec 12th 2007 1:13PM Well since Michael Bay got so much attention with his baseless grand corporate conspiracy theory, I guess the brains at WealthTV figured they'd take a shot at getting into the limelight. So Liz took a sip of the koolaid and viola!
Toshiba planning to undercut Blu-ray, snip MSRP of HD DVD titles {Engadget HD}
Dec 12th 2007 12:01AM Has anyone stopped to think that this story makes absolutely no sense at all? Since when does Toshiba set movie prices? Jeeeze people...think!
Michael Bay's format war conspiracy theory: it's a Microsoft fix {Engadget HD}
Dec 4th 2007 9:25PM Michael Bay is so ill-informed in this rant that I'm really embarassed for him. It is shocking that someone in his position could be this careless in spouting off baseless conspiracy theories and clueless in pronouncing one HD format "superior" to another. Has this guy ever seen the same movie on both formats played on equally configured equipment?
