VIDEO: Production Chevy Volt on the road! {Autoblog Green}

Sep 22nd 2008 2:44PM Hell, if they want to market it as a Saab they should pull out the otto-cycle engine and replace it with a more-efficient small turboshaft generator, that could run on gas/diesel/kerosene/etc...

Or what they REALLY should have is a standardized formfactor and attachments for the 'range extender' and allow people to choose which one they want, or swap them out.. Have a range extender module for gas, one for diesel, one for CNG/LPG, and eventually one that comprises fuel cells.. Replace the range extender, fueling lines and tanks in 4 hours or less at the dealership, maybe even rent the extender for trips (long highway trips = diesel, local use with a home Phill = CNG)..

Sep 18th 2008 9:36AM Well.. You may still be able to get Willy Wonka for like $9 on HDDVD.. I have been LOVING the closeout specials.. Children of Men, Eastern Promises, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, all like $10, along with Trading Places, Animal House, Coming to America for like $7 or $8..

.... While they last, of course!

ABG First Drive: 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid {Autoblog Green}

Aug 11th 2008 4:58PM Yeah, an 8-passenger full-size SUVbrid that uses carbon fibre composites and aluminum/titanium/magnesium etc. so that it weighs less than 2 tons and gets 30mpg? _THAT_ is news.

Aug 3rd 2008 4:12PM Where are the hybrid and/or diesel minivans?

Because if you _really_ have to carry 7 people, a unit-body minivan with front-wheel drive and traction control is a far better choice than some body-on-frame behemoth that weighs at least 1500 pounds more than it has any right to.

Fiberglass hood, tailgate, roof, fenders, door panels, and unit-body frame for the rest... Electrify everything so the engine can run at max efficiency, decoupled from driving various pumps, compressors, etc... Develop a standard formfactor for a hybrid "run extender" so you could swap in a gas, diesel, fuel cell, stirling, etc. at the dealership depending on which provides the best energy value..

BREAKING: HUMMER may die, 4 GM plants to close, Volt approved for production {Autoblog Green}

Jun 3rd 2008 3:28PM Here's a Q.. Why not, instead of using an Otto-cycle motor at constant RPM as the 'range extender', use a micro turboshaft engine instead?

http://www.turbinetechnologies.com/PT-50/news.html

Lower EGTs by reclaiming the heat for even more power... Turbines are more fuel-efficient than reciprocating engines, they're lighter, they have fewer moving parts.. This particular engine is being designed to accept all military jet fuels, diesel, gasoline..

BMW develops lighter, smaller liquid hydrogen tank {Autoblog Green}

Jun 2nd 2008 6:35PM You know what does a pretty good job of storing hydrogen atoms at STP?

Gasoline...

Granted, there's those pesky carbon atoms, but if they could be sucked out of the air and converted back into gasoline as a closed-cycle process...
