Industry professionals chime in with preferred demo material {Engadget HD}

Jul 22nd 2008 2:41PM My favorite HD demo material in order of best first--
• The Host-- the scene where the creature comes out of the water for the first time-- it looks really cool and the pounding footsteps are awesome with my transducers.
• 300-- the charging rhino and marching Persian army scenes.
• Transformers-- the initial desert battle.
• Blade Runner-- the opening shot.
• Children of Men-- the uprising battle.
• Ratatouille-- all of it.

Chicago's WGN takes local news to HD {Engadget HD}

Jul 22nd 2008 9:21AM I got up yesterday morning, turned on the SD set in my sitting room and saw the little HD logo in the lower corner of the screen. I went downstairs to the family room and turned on the HD set and saw the WGN Morning News in HD glory. I'm very happy that they're finally in the 21st century.

I noticed this morning that their makeup looks weird, though.

Blu-ray releases on July 22nd, 2008 {Engadget HD}

Jul 21st 2008 12:19PM Kiss of the Spiderwoman? Awesome flick-- unavailable even on DVD for the longest time. You can keep The Mummy-- I'm buying this.

HD movies featuring stereo sound in PlayStation Video Store {Engadget HD}

Jul 21st 2008 9:34AM Stereo-only for HD? We checked out the video selection Saturday night. Every HD movie that I clicked showed 5.1 as the audio. Every SD movie that I clicked showed stereo.

Video quality for the SD movie we rented (ID4) looked as good as DVD; however, the film was cropped to 16:9 instead of being letterboxed at it's original 2.35:1, which was disappointing as I've got a 'scope screen. And of course the stereo soundtrack lacked the great bass of the original surround, and barely moved my transducers.

But, for a quick $2.99 rental, it wasn't bad.

Playstation Network gets movie / TV download service, single sign-on across devices {Engadget}

Jul 16th 2008 9:19AM Bugger-- this was a reply to Rick @ Jul 15th 2008 7:38PM

Playstation Network gets movie / TV download service, single sign-on across devices {Engadget}

Jul 16th 2008 9:16AM No. Full-bandwidth OTA ATSC HD is ap. 18.5 mbps. However, most stations multi-cast, resulting in typical HD bandwidth of 13mbps. And, that's using mpeg2. Using a more efficient codec, you can get acceptable quality at 5-6 mbps, that'll work for normal-sized screens and rentals, and'll still look better than a cable co.'s HD VOD.

But it isn't going to look as good as Blu Ray or HD DVD.

Playstation Network gets movie / TV download service, single sign-on across devices {Engadget}

Jul 16th 2008 9:05AM Why? Was there an announcement that this would never happen?

Just because it's not available at launch doesn't mean it won't happen in the future.

Jul 16th 2008 9:03AM Who says they're giving up on physical media? The PS3 is a multi-function device. Renting a movie on it isn't going to make the drive stop working.

PlayStation video download service is live {Engadget}

Jul 16th 2008 8:57AM Sure, you can rent overnight for $1, but the gas to get there adds another $5.

Sprint's Airave signal booster in the wild, on sale nationwide this month? {Engadget}

Jul 1st 2008 10:07AM So, I'm paying them a monthly fee for them to use my bandwidth that I'm already paying for? After buying the box?

No thanks.
