Save Arecibo: because aliens don't do voicemail {Engadget}

Jul 8th 2008 11:21AM I did my PhD thesis with Arecibo, and it wasn't looking for the aliens.

Arecibo does a lot of things (atmospheric research, radio astronomy, planetary radar mapping) besides SETI. The SETI stuff is fairly passive. They don't use the dish to point and listen to specific places in the sky. What they actually do is use the data the telescope takes for the scheduled astronomical observations and search for embedded signals. There's loads of that to go through and that's how the money is spent at for SETI.

Carbon nanotubes causing asbestos-like effects in lab mice {Engadget}

May 21st 2008 9:05AM Would be nice, but prevention is always easier than curing. And sometimes the cure itself isn't very pleasant.

May 21st 2008 9:01AM Your lungs can handle normal sized dust that our "cavemen" ancestors did. But any particulate matter smaller than a certain radius can't be handled by your lungs, in general. We just didn't evolve in a world with such micro- and nano- hazards.

WTC releif workers are suffering from numerous pulmonary problems from the fine dust of pulverized concrete, asbestos, and other building materials. So it wouldn't be surprising that nano particles of anything, in sufficient quantities, would cause cancer or other pulmonary problems.

50 years of NASA footage hits Discovery in HD this summer {Engadget HD}

May 9th 2008 9:32AM Very Cool!

Oddly enough, this lists for just $10 more than the standard DVD version (which streets 2 weeks earlier).

Panasonic's DMP-BD50 Blu-ray player gets US release {Engadget HD}

May 7th 2008 12:41PM One other note, the press release still has no release specific date. It only mentions "this spring". This could be in line with Visual Apex's availabilty (mid to late May).

But no date from Panasonic sort gives me the feeling they're not quite ready to hit the market yet.

May 7th 2008 8:13AM I remember paying $400 in 1998 for a "basic" Pioneer DVD player, and that was discounted from an online retailer. Back then it had no component out, progressive scan or anamorphic support.

Although I don't relish the $700 price (or even the $600 price at Visual Apex), stand alone players will drop as DVD players have. We all know the cost for being early adopters. If you don't want the latest, greatest tech but the cheapest tech, why not stick with VHS for that matter.

Everyone knows PS3 prices are subsidized by Sony, but not everyone is a gamer or willing to integrate a non-Home Theatre friendly box into their entertainment setup.

Peerless Slimline HDTV mount is just 0.4-inches thin {Engadget HD}

May 5th 2008 9:58AM Interesting, but don't all the user manuals for flat panels (perhaps only plasma displays) suggest a few inches of breathing space between the panel and the wall?

Blu-ray player sales sink as 2008 begins... except for Sony's PlayStation 3 {Engadget HD}

May 1st 2008 8:09AM I just don't think this is the season for buying new tech. We'll see what happens when the holiday buying season starts.

I'm definitely considering getting my parents a profile 1.1 machine for Christmas. I bet those will be priced to go then. They're just movie watchers so I'm pretty sure they don't really care to play AvP online game.

I'm waiting for the 2.0 Profile boxes to come out, as I'm sure a lot of readers here are.

Apr 28th 2008 11:14AM I downloaded the video's on JAXA websit a while ago, they're available but not in HD resolution. There are two videos though, coming and going (probe has 2 cameras):

The Blu-Ray is for sell on Amazon in Japan, though it's pricey:

Piezing dress generates power, attracts nerds as wearer moves {Engadget}

Apr 28th 2008 10:53AM Kinda looks like something that Penny wore on Lost in Space or Judy in The Jetsons. Finally the future is here!
