ATMC Cable throws in CNBC HD / Bravo HD, makes the big guys look bad {Engadget HD}
Jul 22nd 2008 6:54AM Honestly, this means nothing to me. I need to know what the compression rates are. carrying HD channels isnt anything special if they look like ass. cable providers are focused on Docsis 3.0 and waiting to see what happens with SDV before they really launch more. Cable companies make more money on their internet/phone products than they do on cable. so its not their main priority.
Versus and Golf HD get their own channel, and E! HD on the way {Engadget HD}
Jun 21st 2008 6:34AM E! HD would only be good for The Soup. However, mostly it would waste bandwidth. instead, I suggest the Soup in HD on VOD instead.
LCD outsells plasma 8-to-1 in Q1 2008 {Engadget HD}
May 24th 2008 8:11PM numbers can be twisted into anything you want to say. what screen sizes are we talking about here? 40"+? or LCD being 7"+
British regulators move to quiet obnoxiously loud commercials {Engadget HD}
May 18th 2008 5:24PM as for as I'm aware, In the US. its up to the stations to regulate the sound. they can be fined. you just have to complain to the mighty FCC and likely in great numbers.
Poll: Do you have a multi-channel surround sound system? {Engadget HD}
May 11th 2008 7:53AM As a cable technician, I meet lots of meatheads who think they have surround systems. But alas, they use stereo analog inputs and think they have it working. the worst is when they have shitty a shitty Bose 3-2-1 rig. I just cringe inside and change the subject, most importantly, Ive learned not to try to educate the person, it opens a can of worms.
its not my job to fix their surround sound. theres an important lesson here its called RTFM (read the fucking manual). That being said, I currently have 2 surround sound systems. one in my bedroom and one in the living room. neither one are HTIB.
Oprah Winfrey gets her own channel, will simulcast in HD {Engadget HD}
Jan 16th 2008 6:39AM My wife is going to be pissed. She loves the Discovery Health channel.
TiVo Series3 and HD FINALLY get TiVoToGo, MRV, eSATA drive, other new features {Engadget HD}
Oct 23rd 2007 9:33AM My guess is that TiVo is releasing these updated features to distinguish its own branded hardware Vs. the Comcast/Cox TiVo software upgrades that will be rolling out very soon (which I doubt will have any of those features).
Comcast begins long-awaited rollout of TiVo set-top-box {Engadget}
Oct 13th 2007 6:30AM You need a new box. shutting the box off shouldn't do any of those things, I have 5 dvr's at my house and non of them do those things. at least not in New England. trust me, I'm a Comcast tech. but honestly, I'm not a fan of our dvr software. I cant wait for the TiVo software upgrade, I wasn't fortunate enough to be a part of the beta testing though, I just hope we didnt brand the hell out of it.
Nintendo's free Wiimote sleeve keeps it sticky {Engadget}
Oct 3rd 2007 6:25AM Why the hell does it has me how many I want if it refuses to send me more than one? despite that Ive bought 2 other Wiimotes (as far as I know, Nintendo is still the only maker for Wiimotes, so its not a 3rd party rip-off either.
iPhone users calling for class action lawsuit over firmware v1.1.1 {Engadget}
Oct 1st 2007 5:51AM I hope a class action lawsuit does get started and finally challenges cell phone providers on this very questionable business model. Since the DMCA act was changed recently and not being able to unlock a phone is no longer protected and basically illegal for carriers to refuse to unlock a cell phone. (http://www.wired.com/politics/law/commentary/circuitcourt/2006/12/72241)
simply put the purpose of locked phones (supposedly) was to keep lower prices and discounts on hte handsets. but if you purchased the phone at its full retail price, it was unnecessary.
Forget about 3rd party app's right now, just worry about the unlocking portion. the rest will follow. and support for 3rd party app's may not hold up in court.
