Jul 15th 2009 1:46PM Overly compressed "HD" content is THE biggest ripoff today! It's everywhere! Cable, downloads, satellite. THE best quality HOME entertainment viewing experience available today is BluRay, hands down! Can anyone argue that? I'm not talking about what you THINK is good HD quality, I'm talking about the ACTUAL facts and numbers.
Example..I ripped Ratatouille....file from the BluRay was 46GIGS! 46GIGABIYTS PEOPLE not 7GIGs like a 360 or Netflix download...46GBs! It would take DAYS to stream that sort of quality to your home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If there is anyone out there that honestly thinks that the cable, satellite and download content companies are taking (for example only) that 46 GIG file and then sending it to you for your HD viewing pleasure in the same quality as that of BluRay, you need to seek serious mental help!
There is ABSOLUTELY no way BluRay is ripping anyone off! It is THE only way ANY consumer can get THE best video and sound quality possible for normal home viewing. The argument, if there really is one, is in no way comparable that downloaded content or even broadcast services offer BluRay quality! Look what happened to that satellite company a while back for advertising BluRay quality content. HA! What a joke!
Remember people, just because it's 1080P doesn't mean it's BluRay quality 1080P! Anyone can broadcast or allow you to download 1080P content, so what! When I download something and it says it's 1080P, it's usually not! (see below and wait until the commercial is over) It usually ends up being the SAME content as the normal viewing size, it's just stretched to fill the screen which happens to be a resolution of 1080P which is what all that downloaded content is. I'm sure some of it is actual 1080P but the MAJOR majority os NOT!

For me, there's no way I will ever subscribe to ANY down loadable content site unless their quality matches or exceeds BluRay.
BluRay is NOT a portable content provider! It's a HOME entertainment provider. When there are portable BluRay players in everyone's possession like there are DVD players today, THEN and ONLY then will it be considered a all out HD content provider.
If you want the BEST visual content money can buy(at least for the average home consumer) then it's BluRay, PERIOD! If you would rather suffer a hit in the quality department, then it's down loadable content or even cable HD if you want to go there. Personally, I would MUCH rather put in a BluRay or Tropic Thunder that watch it on my Charter HD POS system. Every time I see all that mosquito noise I should ask for a credit on my account, it drives me crazy as you can see by my previous rant!

HD quality comparison of online video sharing sites {Engadget HD}
Dec 9th 2008 6:55PM I just did a side by side comparison with both Matt videos..I used Youtube HD verison via the qt link.. The youtubes version CLEARLY is better....They are both identicle resoultions but the main difference I saw was that the youtubes picture was brighter and I could see more details in dark scenes. I froze the scene at around second 6 roughly and it took me about 5 minutes to get them perfect. You can clearly see that the youtubes video is brighter and clearer! His right eye is completely blacked out in the vimeo pic whereas in the youtube vid, you can make out at least his eye socket. Also the overall pic quality is just better!

It should read...it CANNOT produce the correct color. Determining and being able to produce it are different things, thus the tv MAY be able to determine it....but it sure as hell can't produce it!

What is the result of bad contrast ratio? Do you know?? I'll describe it and PLEASE if I am wrong, tell me so!!!!!!!!!
Dark outside evening scene....you can see some moon light but its mostly dark. As you jove your eyes from the darker area of the screen to the lighter, you see the darker shades of blacks, then dark greys, then lighter greys eventually turning into the white moon color.
You will be able to see bands of color instead of a nice clean smooth transition from dark to white. I'm not talking about a rapidly moving scene, a steady one or one that moves slowly.
Those "bands" of colors are caused by bad contrast. Do you know why...NEMO moment..... DO YOU DO YOU DO YOU?????????????????
Because the tv has such bad contrast, it CANNOT determine what color to produce. This is sometimes confused with mosquito noise which is produced because of over compression and the fact that the tv cannot determine what those pixels should produce so it guesses...you get mosquito noise.
LCD tech is NOWHERE NEAR that of CRT tech! Now you have progressive tech that is nice, definitely better than watching interlaced but LCD tech SUCKS and will NEVER EVER be anywhere close to that of CRT.
Save your money and just wait until newer tech comes out!!!! Don't spend your money on corporate lies to get you to think they are producing a better tv!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aug 25th 2008 1:08PM Hey Byrd....are you serious? You think mosquito noise is cause by a weak signal? I'm not doubting that your tv looks great. What I am saying is that LCD tech as a tech for everyday viewing of tv signals(any kind) is NOT great!!! I don't care how the tv gets its "signal". It doesn't matter whether its dtv or cable or ota. THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE QUALITY AT THIS TIME...is OTA. Do you think your DTV provider is sending you the exact same signal as your local network station? NO Fing way!! Its way more compressed. If you don't know that, then you need to sop commenting on things you DON'T KNOW!

OTA does not suck. Getting a good strong signal is a different story. I'm not commenting on whether you can get a signal...I'm commenting on the quality of it if you get it.
If you think the best quality pic youve ever seen was on a lcd tv, you have terrible eyes. That isn't an opinion, it's a fact. Do you know the technology behind lcd monitors? Do you realize what contrast ratio is and why it's important? Do you know that lcd tech cannot come close to that of a crt tube? I don't care WHAT tech is out there, it NOWHERE as close to that of a crt tube!
Now beauty is in the eye of the beholder so if it looks good to you, great!! BUT don't be ignorant and think that if it looks good, it must be better because it is NOT!
LCD tech is great for computers because mostly, those are non moving images. crt is basically the speed of light so you cannot see any "ghosting" effect because there basically is none. Not so with LCD tech correct? Ever heard of refresh rate???? Yes, they are getting better, but nowhere close to that of a crt and never will be, IT CAN'T BE!!!!!!!
How is lcd better tech, so much so that they can justify spending $1000's of dollars?
How can they justify to price for crappy contrast ratio?? Crappy refresh rates? Not to mention life span, although ive seen many crts go out before their time more likely due to manufacturing than to the tech itself.
What I'm saying is that the world is going LCD crazy! LCD is ok, in some situations, I agree. But like I said before, it is NEVER going to be HDTV quality tv or movie viewing because the tech just isn't up to snuff!
You have to seperate your opinion and your bad eyes from the technology. I am not stating things I see, I'm stating specs and the tech behind it all.

Have you SEEN tv on a LCD lately? It SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For example....the NBC Olympic logo in the upper right of the screen showing right now. ON my tv, its beautiful....high detail bright...I was in CC the other day and they had a over the air signal goin to all the tvs. This logo looked terrible!!!!!!! I could BARELY make out the edges...the colros were mixed a little together and surround ALL text on the ENTIRED tv was mosquito noise! Its around EVERY little bit of text. There is NO high detail ANYWHERE On ANY TV!!
LCD tech just plain SUCKS for television viewing. There are several problems....the quality of the signal the tv gets....the limit of WHAT and HOW MUCH information the tv can display..mosquito noise is created because the tv DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION TO DISPLAY THOSE PIXELS CORRECTLY!!!!!! This is PARTLY the tvs fault. (am I right on that one?, I think so)
