We'll admit that sour grapes coming from the direction of our wallets usually make us look right past Runco's offerings. It's great stuff from a good company, but let's just say if you slip the Runco logo into a Rorschach test, we won't come up with "affordable." So in case you missed it in our CEDIA blitz, Runco's LS-3 LightStyle beamer carries a MSRP of $4,995 -- not cheap, but not new car kind of money that we associate with the brand, either. It's a 1080p DLP projector that packs a list of Runco tech like ConstantContrast, Vivix enhancement, Runco image processing, that all together are good for 10,000:1 contrast. If you're fortunate enough to be in the market for something like a JVC projector, consider adding the LS-3 to your audition list and call us over for some popcorn.
Price check -- Runco's LS-3 projector within reach of mere mortals originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 24 Sep 2009 11:49:00 EST. The P1, P2 and P3 DLP projectors should fit into NuVision's custom-centric product lineup quite nicely when they release early next year. Things start out pretty tame with the $8,999 P1, a UHP-lamped offering with (of course) 1080p native resolution. The P2 makes the game interesting with its LED lamp system that should pretty much cut the lamp exchanges down to zero if you can really control the ambient light in your theater; but then again, $18,999 would pay for a lot of bulbs. Finally, there's no denying the glory of a three-chip DLP setup, though, and P3 mates those three chips with a 300-Watt UHP lamp for the kind of no-compromise performance you'd expect from a $36,999 beamer.

NuVision crashes the projector party with LED-lamp P2, 3-chip P3 originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 15 Sep 2009 07:33:00 EST. Following CEDIA tradition, Runco (oh yes, they were actually here) had plenty to show off, with new projectors and LCDs, apparently enough that we needed two separate rooms for the press conference. We switched rooms to experience the company's new QuantumColor LED-lit Q-750i, combining Luminus Platlight technology with its own engineering to create what it says is unsurpassed performance and unrivaled customization. Its showcased a few new color management wrinkles, customers can have a shot at making green grass pop without skewing other elements starting in November for around $15k. The company also had in store new Crystal Portfolio LCDs, some featuring its OPAL technology for outdoor situations, and a new round of LightStyle series projectors, for the kind of folks who only want to spend five or seven grand on a PJ, while the VideoXtreme line falls somewhere between that and the $100k+ crowd. Also mentioned? The company plans to keep selling its plasmas, even though a certain someone (cough, Pio) has exited the market. It's been a long time since InFocus has brought out a beamer under the ScreenPlay name, but the SP8602 is coming out guns blazing at CEDIA. The 1080p DarkChip DLP boasts a 30,000:1 contrast, but can also crank out 1,300 lumens for when viewing must compete with that big ball of fire in the sky. The SP8602 is packed with good tech, including a six-segment color wheel, TI's BrilliantColor, 10-bit video processing from PixelWorks and 120-Hz support to make sure the images thrown up on the big screen are eye-poppingly good. Heck, it's even ready if said screen is less than perfect -- vertical and horizontal lens shifts, automatic image flipping (ceiling mount is where it's at) and warping functions (don't use them unless you have to) should pretty much be able to deliver square images to all but the most compromised situations. Available in late October, but you'll have to hit up your dealer for pricing.

It's not always easy for a projector to stand out from the pack these days, but it looks like Mitsubishi has turned to one of the most tried and true tricks in the book for its new HC3800 model: offer a ton of features for a great price. That starts, naturally, with a full 1080p resolution, and things stay more than respectable all along down the line with 1,300 lumens of brightness, a 4,000:1 contrast ratio, a promised 5,000 hour lamp life (in conservation mode) and, get this, full support for anamorphic lenses in case you're really looking to top off your home theater. Best of all, the projector is set to run just $1,395, and should be available sometime in the third quarter of this year.

[Via About Projectors]

Runco has taken a somewhat winding road to attending next week's CEDIA Expo, but the company is coming out guns blazing. Unfortunately for us, though, those are some pricey guns, indeed. Making a debut at the show will be the VX-33i (pictured) and VX-33d projectors -- 3-chip DLP designs that combine 1080p resolution and Runco's own video processing to deliver the goods at really indulgent (larger than 120-inch) screens. The VX-33i has Vivix processing onboard and the VX-33d offloads these duties to the external DHD video processor. Sounds great, right? Well, sorry to say, these beamers aren't going to buck the pricing trend in 3-chip DLP setups -- $50,000 for the VX-33i, $60,000 for the VX-33d put these beyond even our "a guy's gotta dream" category.

Runco rolls out VX-33i, VX-33d projectors for wealthy CEDIA attendees originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 02 Sep 2009 11:51:00 EST. Don't get us wrong -- $999 isn't exactly in the "impulse buy" category, but it opens up projectors appeal tremendously. Optoma's HD20 has joined Vivitek's H1080FD in the $999, 1080p, DLP-powered beamer segment. Competition is always good, and the HD20 is happy to oblige by bringing 1,700 lumens, a 4000:1 contrast ratio, two HDMI inputs, and a bulb life of 4,000 or 3,000 hours depending on whether you take in the movies in "standard" or "bright" mode. Oh yeah, and the Optoma name might be a little more familiar to consumers than Vivitek, too. Competition is good, indeed.
Optoma HD20 projector cracks the $1,000 barrier originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 06 Aug 2009 14:51:00 EST. Those craving a 1080p projector but feeling a little strapped for cash right now (and who isn't) will be glad to hear that Vivitek has come through on both its pricing and timing promises for its H1080FD model. If you're looking for a beamer on the cheap and the 720p LCD Epson PowerLite 700 didn't do it for you, the quick rundown on Vivitek's offering goes like this -- DLP engine, 1080 lines of resolution, 1800 lumens bright, $999, available this month. As always, the 5,000:1 contrast ratio needs some salt, but the 29dB rating and 3,000-hour lamp life aren't too shabby; RS-232 control is just gravy. If the performance comes close to the promise, don't be surprised to see some of these projectors added alongside direct-view sets for dedicated night-time viewing in steady-income homes.
Vivitek holds true to its word, delivers sub-$1000 1080p projector originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 04 Aug 2009 12:54:00 EST. Sure enough, TI unveiled its DLP Cinema 4k technology and announced that Barco, Christie and NEC will be sprinkling the new tech across more than a dozen new projectors. Now, if TI would get serious about 3-chip DLP consumer solutions -- not even 4k -- we'd be out of our seats (or maybe the movie house's). Until then, we'll have to settle for the possibility that the lowered costs of the next generation of the DLP Cinema platform will allow for more screens to go digital. One thing's for sure -- those IMAX DLP setups need all the pixels they can get.
TI sticks to its DLP guns, fires off 4k pro gear originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sat, 20 Jun 2009 11:21:00 EST. The first new model, the PJD6381, looks to be aimed at schools and businesses, with an extremely short throw ratios (around .68) for reducing shadowing effects, and a number of interactive whiteboard options. Available in August, this guy has 1024 x 768 XGA resolution, 2,500 ANSI lumens, a 2,500:1 contrast ratio, 120Hz refresh rate, and is compatible with the both Texas Instruments' DLP Link and NVIDIA's 3D-Vision 3D technology -- expect it to have an MSRP of $1,249. The PJD6211 and PJD6221 ($849 and $899, respectively) also sport 1024 x 768 XGA resolution, as well as up to 2,700 lumens, a 2,800:1 contrast ratio and both DLP Link and 3D-Vision compatibility. These two should hit the stores some time in July.

If you roll out this weekend to check out Disney Pixar's latest addition to the 3D film movement Up, you might be seeing it broadcast by one of NEC's new NC2500S-A projectors or an older model that has been upgraded, sending out 3D in 2K res courtesy of Texas Instruments' DLP chips. The kids might not notice a 33% improvement in resolution and brightness over previous generations that let it put the show on bigger screens than ever before, but we're sure you will. Word is Clearview's Ziegfeld Theatre is one of the first with the upgrade, so if you're close by, we all know how important choosing a theater carefully can be these days.
NEC upgrades DLP projectors for higher res 3D in time for the premiere of Up originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sat, 30 May 2009 10:03:00 EST. Been waiting for something to top the well-received Samsung SP-A800B? How about the next in the line, the SP-A900, ready to ship later this month but now improved with Texas Instruments' DarkChip 4 DLP chipset for an even higher contrast ratio (now up to 12,000:1), similarly higher price, 1080p res at an MSRP of $12,999. CNET lets it be known this should bring the Joe Kane approved design home via specialty retailers as is its custom, but we're sure fans of quality projectors know where it can be found.
Samsung's Joe Kane-designed SP-A900 due later this month originally appeared on Engadget HD on Mon, 11 May 2009 22:56:00 EST. Over at ShoWest this week, Texas Instruments is announcing plans for its next-generation DLP Cinema electronics platform. Generally speaking, this wouldn't be all that exciting, but this one's different. Aside from letting us know that DLP Cinema projectors will be deployed by Christie, Barco and NEC at commercial theaters around the world starting in 2010, we're also told that it will feature "increased bandwidth to integrate alternative content to incorporate live 3D broadcasting." Yep, that NAB demonstration and this year's NBA All-Star weekend were just the beginning.
Next-gen DLP Cinema platform makes room for live 3D broadcasting originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 02 Apr 2009 00:23:00 EST.
Acer announced its K10 pocket projector way back in December, but it looks like it's just now finally landed in the UK, and unfortunately received a bit of a price hike in the process. Now retailing for just over £400 (or $560, roughly a $100 increase), the SVGA projector otherwise seems to have remained unchanged since its debut, with it still promising an impressive 20,000 hour lamp life, and offering up 100 ANSI lumens of brightness, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and a projected image size up to 60 inches. As you can see, it's also not quite able to join the ranks of pico projectors, though its specs certainly beat out most of its smaller cousins.

Just what Toshiba needed, right? As if the economy wasn't hammering the company's bottom line badly enough, United States Magistrate Judge Steven M. Gold of the Eastern District of New York has just entered a decision that'll force it to pay up over $1 million in order to settle a class action lawsuit it just lost. Originally filed in 2007, the suit alleged "that the lamps of certain Toshiba DLP televisions were susceptible to premature failure causing purchasers to repeatedly expend hundreds of dollars for replacement bulbs, which allegedly suffered from the same defect." After a thorough investigation, it was found that Tosh would be responsible for reimbursing those who purchased a bulb replacement that failed prematurely, and the warranty on replacement bulbs has been pushed from six months to a full year. Naturally, the law firm representing the 265,000 or so affected individuals was quite stoked with the outcome, as should you be if you're in that mix.
Toshiba forced to pay up in class action DLP lawsuit originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sun, 01 Mar 2009 23:03:00 EST. Panasonic's latest crew of beamers may not boast the highest resolutions, but they've got longevity that's second to none. Announced at ISE 2009 in Amsterdam, the four member PT-D6000 series is designed to be installed where around the clock operation is either needed or preferred. The durable, long-lasting DLP projectors sport a dual-lamp design and an Auto Cleaning Filter while offering resolutions from XGA (PT-D6000S) to WUXGA (PT-DZ6710) and brightness levels between 6,000 and 6,500 lumens. There's no mention of price tags just yet, but you can sift through the few remaining details in the read link below.
Panasonic's DLP PT-D6000 projector line can stay lit for days originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 20:12:00 EST. The improved performance is due to a reduction in "efficiency droop," which causes regular LEDs to turn less power into light when fed higher currents -- the team replaced the traditional active layer of the LEDs with a new specially matched layer. No word on when any of this is coming to market, but we're holding out hope for CES 2010.
Researchers develop higher-efficiency LEDs originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 20:23:00 EST. Sanyo already delivered a sub-$2,000 1080p projector today, but the PDG-DHT100JL DLP beamer is definitely a notch above. The noticeably more brawny PJ, which is destined for a Japanese release in March, packs a 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution, 6,500 lumens, twin UHP lamp and a dual twin color wheel system. No word on a price just yet, but trust us, it'll be up there.
Sanyo punches out PDG-DHT100JL 1080p DLP projector originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sat, 10 Jan 2009 08:47:00 EST. SIM2 never fails to stun, and it's proving yet again that it couldn't care less about the global economic situation (or that it just aims at a class of people that are simply unaffected) with the Grand Cinema HT5000E. Said device was actually outed yesterday courtesy of an HDGiants pair-up, but today we're being gifted with the official details. The three-chip DLP beamer includes a trio of 0.95-inch DarkChip4 DMDs, a 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution, six lens options, Ethernet jack for remote control and world-class color uniformity / edge-to-edge focus capabilities. Yeah, it'll cost you more than most vehicles and even some diminutive homes at $57,995, but at least the white glove delivery service is included. A true bargain, let us tell you. Full release is after the break.
Continue reading SIM2 aims high with $58,000 Grand Cinema HT5000E DLP projector

SIM2 aims high with $58,000 Grand Cinema HT5000E DLP projector originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 15:54:00 EST. Only a few months ago, NEC introduced the NP41, NP61 and NP64 models to its series of mobile projectors, and now it is filling one of the lineup gaps with the NP62. Powerpointing road warriors will be happy to know the unit weighs in at a mere 3.7-pounds, and even soft talkers should be able to speak above the 32dB noise put out by the projector in ECO mode. Grab that presentation, put it on a USB memory stick and you can cue it right up via the onboard USB port to the tune of 1024x768 pixels, 3000 lumens bright.
NEC releases travel-savvy NP62 projector for road-warriors originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 08:46:00 EST. 3D displays are hotter than Hansel right now, and ViewSonic is getting in to the new (old) tech of goggle-driven depth with a line of displays dubbed Fuhzion. First up is the 22-inch VX2265wm LCD, announced last year and sounding quite similar to the Samsung 2233RZ from yesterday. It's a 1680 x 1050, 120Hz panel with a 2ms response rate, enabling it to tackle the quick cycling that will be required to reproduce a 3D image. The other addition to the line is the PJD6220-3D DLP projector, an updated (or at least renamed) version of the company's existing PJD6220, illuminating 1024 x 768 pixels at 120Hz and a respectable contrast ratio of 2000:1. The projector is due next month for $1,499, while the VX2265wm drops in the next few weeks for a rather more reasonable $399 -- another stat that happens to match Samsung's offering.
ViewSonic turns off spell check, launches Fuhzion line of 3D display devices originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 13:16:00 EST. Vivitek didn't really do an awesome job of making its very first projectors anything memorable (see, you didn't even know they were in the beamer biz, now did you?), but it's hoping to remedy that here at CES 2009 with the beastly HC7500A. Said device is the world's first 1080p LED projector, offering up a 35,000:1 contrast ratio, 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution, 700-lumen brightness rating and a lamp-free LED light source that can keep shining for around 20,000 hours. We know, you're impressed. But impressed enough to drop $13,999 for one in June? Full release is after the break.
Continue reading Vivitek's HC7500A is world's first 1080p LED projector

Vivitek's HC7500A is world's first 1080p LED projector originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 00:00:00 EST. Quite honestly, the HC7500A turns us on a bit more than this D5500, but Vivitek is clearly aiming at two separate markets here. This one is hoping to wiggle into large concert halls, churches, etc. -- you know, places that can't always blot out the light to make the picture perfect. Boasting 5,500 ANSI lumens, a 2,500:1 contrast ratio, XGA native resolution and Texas Instruments' BrilliantColor technology, the single-chip DLP projector promises a decent image even in a partially lit room. You'll also find a six-segment color wheel, a dual-lamp design, RS-232 / USB ports, Ethernet socket for remote control and the usual complement of inputs (VGA, DVI, etc.). The heavy duty device can be snapped up as we speak for $5,999, and you can catch the release in full after the break.
Continue reading Vivitek intros ultra-bright D5500 DLP projector

Vivitek intros ultra-bright D5500 DLP projector originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 00:00:00 EST. Look for something to drive your new Samsung monitor or 120Hz 3D HDTV? Enter NVIDIA's GeForce 3D Vision package, loaded up with powered 3D glasses (no red / blue silliness here, charged via USB) and an IR emitter to keep everything synced between the display and your glasses. Left 4 Dead, WoW: WotLK and several other games are already compatible with more expected to come soon. CES had a quick demo and didn't notice any of the headaches sometimes associated with stereocopic 3D, but at $399 for the display and $199 for this set when it's available in the next few days, we're not sure how close we want to get to those zombies, but WoW fans may see things differently.
NVIDIA offers up GeForce 3D Vision, takes WoW players further down the rabbit hole originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 21:12:00 EST. The writing has definitely been on the wall, but CES 2009 is poised to be the showcase for energy-efficient HDTVs. With manufacturers jumping out of the woodwork to trumpet their compliance with Energy Star 3.0, TWICE expects a slew of top-tier TV manufacturers to boast about low power consumption numbers, and considering that a bunch of 'em will be demonstrating LED or OLED-based sets, we aren't surprised to hear it. Potentially more interesting, however, is the notion that "a number of plasma makers are expected to get into the power-savings act with models that significantly reduce draw levels in big-screen displays, taking away another advantage often cited by LCD TV competitors." In related news, we're expecting a record number of internet-connected sets, as TV manufacturers look to steal away market share currently held by STB makers. Sure, we won't see any panel size records shattered, but we're already giddy at what Vegas will hold in just under a month.
Eco-friendly, well-connected HDTVs to be all the rage at CES 2009 originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 17 Dec 2008 16:41:00 EST. Around this time last year, SIM2 was busy busting wallets with its $32k C3X. This year, we've got a revamped version coming in at an even higher price point: the network-friendly C3X LUMIS HOST. The 1080p beamer packs a 3-chip DLP (DarkChip4) engine, a 35,000:1 contrast ratio, 3,000 ANSI lumens, DynamicBlack technology and IR / Ethernet / RS-232 control ports. The standout feature, however, is SIM2's own proprietary three-line optical-digital High-Definition Optical Signal Transfer (H.O.S.T.) system, which allows two of these beasts to be connected over distances of up to 750-feet. Sadly, this unit will only find homes with those with copious quantities of disposable income, as it starts at $36,495 and goes higher when throwing in a T3 extra-long throw lens.

[Via CyberTheater]
SIM2 launches Ethernet-packin' C3X LUMIS HOST 1080p projector originally appeared on Engadget HD on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 17:45:00 EST. The PJ is geared for more commercial applications (think education, churches, board rooms, etc.), but we don't see any reason why it won't handle your home cinema needs just fine. It's available this month for "under $1,000," which probably means $999.99 plus applicable sales tax.
Sharp introduces PG-F255W 720p DLP projector for under $1,000 originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sat, 06 Dec 2008 01:40:00 EST. Optoma is pitching its TX1080 DLP projector as a "crossover" model that's happy in living rooms as well as boardrooms, and with a 1080p DarkChip DLP with BrilliantColor and a 3700 lumen lamp, it sounds like it should fit the picture quality bill pretty nicely (the 2200:1 contrast figure seems a bit low, but it's not worth debating CR numbers). Add in the $3500 price point and it's not beyond the budget of home buyers looking into front projection, and the network management features sound like a great item if your IT department needs to approve the purchase. So yeah, if you're in the market for a HD DLP beamer around $3000 this holiday, add another one to your candidate list.
Optoma's TX1080 projector keeps Jack from becoming a dull boy originally appeared on Engadget HD on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 08:44:00 EST. People love their money, sure, but people still love their style. A thought-provoking article over at CNET has us pondering whether or not these tough economic times will actually increase sales of thick RPTVs during the holiday season. After all, the desire for high-def isn't apt to wane while the belt tightens, but consumers may begin to sacrifice thinness in order to finally bring home a big screen of their own. In our estimation, we can't say in good faith that we think CRT / RPTV sales will skyrocket while flat-panels struggle, particularly when you realize just how cheap these wall-mountable sets will be on Black Friday and during the run-up to that final week in December. It's a cute gesture, but we're still saying the heartbeat for chunky sets is growing weaker by the day.

[Thanks, Anthony]
Will tough times give RPTVs one final breath of life? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 11:49:00 EST. Let's get one thing straight: Barco's DP-1200 isn't meant for any of those "amateur" home cinemas. But then again, you could probably piece that together on your own after digesting the 205-pound weight specification. This digital cinema beamer packs a 0.98-inch DLP Cinema chip, 2,000:1 contrast ratio, twin DVI / SMPTE 292M inputs and a drool-worthy 2,048 x 1,080 native resolution. Unfortunately, Barco's not releasing a retail price to the public, but those who aren't afraid of gigantic numbers can certainly phone up a dealer to get the ball rolling.

[Via AboutProjectors]
Barco ships mammoth DP-1200 DLP 2k projector originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 01:41:00 EST. InFocus' latest may not offer 1080p, but it also won't force you to sell your outhouse in order to stomach the sticker. This 720p beamer leverages DLP BrilliantColor technology and offers up 1,800 lumens, a 2,500:1 contrast ratio, a lamp life ranging between 3,500 and 4,000 hours and an array of ports including HDMI 1.3, component, composite, S-video and VGA. Straight up, Toshiba's latest beamer wasn't designed with the home theater in mind, but that doesn't mean it's unfit for your abode. The TDP-WX5400U arrives with DLP BrilliantColor technology along with DynamicBlack tech to offer "incredible contrast in images and video, with darker elements providing a superior black image." All that hubbub aside, you'll also find twin lamps to offer up 5,400 ANSI lumens (or 2,700 with a single lamp), an optional interchangeable color wheel, native 1,280 x 800 resolution, automatic vertical / horizontal keystone correction and enough ports to shake a stick at. At $6,299, though, you'll want to figure out a way to slap it on the corporate card (legally, of course).

[Via AboutProjectors]
Toshiba TDP-WX5400U DLP projector: dual lamps, interchangeable color wheel originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 19:29:00 EST. As the Blue Chips rise and fall like the tides, so have bobbed the reports regarding how this economy will affect HDTV sales. Just a week ago, one survey found that 73% of non-HDTV owners were still forging ahead with plans to pick up an HDTV within the next 12 months, and given the record low prices we're apt to see on Black Friday, we don't half blame 'em. Merely 24 hours later, out popped another report backing the claim. Now, however, Craig Moffett, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., is suggesting that the current credit crunch could already be eating away at TV sales. Or, you know, maybe all these intelligent souls out there understand that massive sales are just over a month away. How's that for analysis?

Analysts say HDTV sales could decline in current economy, snow could fall in Montana originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 10:01:00 EST. Apparently, one thing that simply can't be done without even in "tough economic times" is HDTV. Based on a recent survey from PriceGrabber (which, admittedly, shouldn't be taken very seriously), 73% of non-HDTV owners that responded said that they were forging ahead with plans to snag an HDTV within the next 12 months. Granted, such a figure really isn't all that shocking -- after all, the looming digital transition is the perfect excuse to splurge, and prices are apt to be at an all time low this Black Friday. Trust us folks, 720p+ is worth the sacrifice.

HDTV brushes economic woes off its shoulder in latest survey originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 07 Oct 2008 08:01:00 EST. Yet again, this week has delivered two more impressive innovations in the in-home 3D space, and yet again, we're left to wonder if this stuff actually has teeth. We know at least some studios are putting a great deal of cash and effort into 3D technology, but are existing HDTV owners (and to an even greater extent, non-HDTV owners) ready to give this stuff a go? We suppose no-glasses-necessary 3D isn't so annoying, but having to sit almost directly in front of the set to get the experience is hardly more convenient. We know -- anything can succeed with enough marketing, but are you personally intrigued by 3D in the home? Are you champing at the bit to grab hold of more 3D material? Vent away in comments below.

Pardon us while we lick our chops, but we're digging -- nay, loving -- LG's HS102. The finely tuned successor to the delectable HS101 boasts an 800 x 600 native resolution, 160 ANSI lumens, 2,000:1 contrast ratio, 4:3 / 16:9 output options, PhlatLight LED technology, and a built-in DivX player for good measure. On top of that, you'll also find an integrated rechargeable battery that'll keep things beaming for around two hours. It's said to be available now in South Korea for around ?670,000 ($555), and you can peep the read link for a few more images (including in-action shots).

[Thanks, Jonathan]
LG shows off HS102 DLP mobile projector with built-in battery, DivX player originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 01 Oct 2008 08:51:00 EST. Not like you're actually considering one for your own domed theater, but it'll be available for a small fortune in Q1 2009.

[Via DVICE]
Carl Zeiss' powerdomeVELVET planetarium projector: 2,500,000:1 contrast ratio originally appeared on Engadget HD on Mon, 29 Sep 2008 19:41:00 EST. Motion blur has been a big topic in the world of HDTV for as long as we can remember, but it wasn't until recently that someone figured out a way to test it in a non-subjective way. Our friend Gary Merson -- aka the HD Guru -- actually got his hands on 125 2008 model HDTVs and not only ran them through all the more traditional tests like 3:2 pull-down, and de-interlacing, but also tried out his resolution motion loss test that indicates how many lines of resolution a set is capable of displaying when there is motion -- yeah, so like most of the time. For the most part Pioneer plasmas ruled the charts at about 900 lines, as expected, but the real surprise is that the ultimate winner was the Samsung LN-46A950 -- in fact it was the only 1080 set to actually display all 1080 lines when there was motion (but only in one specific setting, other settings were as low as 330 lines!). What's more of a reason for 46A950 fans to rejoice in is that most 120Hz LCDs were closer to 600 lines, so it really is in a league of its own in regards to LCDs. These stats are fun and all, but we'd like to remind you while you download the PDF and check ou the specs on the latest sets, that specs seldom ever tell the whole story, so we still recommend buying with your eyes instead of a spec sheet.
HD Guru evaluates 125 HDTVs in the resolution loss test originally appeared on Engadget HD on Mon, 29 Sep 2008 08:51:00 EST.
