Oppo BDP-83 pre-orders now open for all (in North America)
Weren't on the invited pre-order list for the Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player? Our tipster Mike gave us the heads up that those not on the initial list can now go ahead and lay down $499 to pre-order one of the universal players, expected to ship sometime between July 1 - 3. All you have to do is check out our hands on or the comments from some previous owners to see why this fast loading, SACD & DVD-Audio playing box is so highly regarded already.

This is a waste of money. Looks like it does not have DIVX or MKV. I mean come on. I would rather buy the new C200 from PCH where u can add a blu ray player!

If you took a look at more than just the little snippet above, you would see several reviews noted that you can play both of those.

Actually, it plays most HD Divx and mkvs:http://watershade.net/wmcclain/BDP-83-faq.html#does-it-play-high-definition-divx-xvid-and-mpeg-files

I checked the reviews, and yes it does play MKVs. I take my words back.

I believe it only plays MKV files stored on an optical disc, not stored on a network drive, making this feature less useful. I considered buying one until I learned this.

Ace player that's already been available to import to UK for 3 weeks!

I've had mine up and running for over a month. Have yet to run across anything that I don't like about it. Built very solid. Weighs about 4 times as much as my Sammy blu-ray player. I have it connected with analog outs to my Sunfire TGR-401 and the sound is great.

I have had mine for 1½ month. I have had 4 Blu-ray players and tried a few more. This is by far the best one yet.
I tried the hacked firmware and it works great, but since it needs to be hacked each time I have bought a hardware region free kit. The best is that it does not require any soldering and can be taken out again.

I bought the DIY region free hardware kit it here:

The free hacked firmware is here (that works perfectly (just remember to flash the original one in the same version first)).

There is another DIY region free hardware kit soon available here (it will probably take a day or two)
