Buena Vista and Vudu to sell HD titles day-and-date with Blu-ray
Big news for Vudu fans this morning as yet another barrier to the digital download world is knocked down. Buena Vista has shown over the past year or so that it is willing to try new things and today that means you'll be able to buy HD and HDX titles via Vudu. This is the first major studio to make this type of commitment to digital purchases via Vudu and although we're not the biggest fans of the model due to limited viewing windows etc, we have to admit that having access to 60 HDX quality movies like No Country for Old Men is intriguing. No mention of animated features in the release though, which is a concern, but even so, we like knowing that there are higher quality digital downloads than Apple available for sale.

Ben, two corrections:
"...which is a concern..." and "...available for sale."
I have a Vudu box and its HDX movies are great. Even better is that all their movies are displayed at 24 fps, regardless of resolution. I guess it would be cool to have some HD/HDX films permanently stored on the box, but like most people, I'm still a big fan of OOM (owning optical media). Applaud my awesome coinage.

This is good news and a step in the right direction, most studios allowed you to purchase Standard Definition movies on VUDU on release date, now you can purchase HD versions of Buena Vista titles...cool.
This does not address one of the biggest complaints from otherwise happy VUDU customers. It's very frustrating when you want to RENT a hot new release but it's only available for purchase for 2-4 weeks before you can rent it. This is simply maddening to users. Some studios allow you to rent or buy on release date such as Warner Bros, other studios need to fall in.

I agree. It's very friggin' frustrating not to be able to rent a movie on release day!!!!

Exactly.. and they are doing it deliberately to stall the growth of digital downloads. Blockbuster and Netflix have rentals day and date so I'm not seeing why Vudu and other services shouldn't unless they are aware that if they do this they'll have zero Blu-ray sales.

It happens less and less but yeah it's still pretty annoying. There are two major flaws with this business model: 1) If you looking for something to watch on a box with access to thousands of different titles you'll just choose something else, and chances are it will be from a different studio! Also 2) for some of these I've used netflix to just rent the disc. The money they see from the netflix rental is tiny compared to the cut they get from a HDX rental.
It's funny how hard some companies will try not to take your money sometimes :)
